More: In late March, at the height of the Iran war, Israel quietly approved more settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank than it ever had at one time.

Staff members at the United States Embassy in Jerusalem saw the move as potentially flouting one of President Trump's explicit red lines for Israel " no annexation of the West Bank " and drafted an urgent report intended for policy makers in Washington.

That memo never reached Washington. It was quashed by David Milstein, a top aide to Ambassador Mike Huckabee, according to three U.S. officials briefed on the process.

This was no isolated incident.

Since taking up his post in April 2025, Mr. Milstein, 36, has repeatedly suppressed or significantly revised embassy reporting on Israeli activities to present the Netanyahu government in a favorable light, according to a dozen people who work with or interact with Mr. Milstein in both Jerusalem and Washington:

As settler violence in the West Bank surged in the spring, for instance, he stymied embassy reporting suggesting that the Israeli government was failing to take action, according to the three officials. Instead the embassy sent a cable to Washington, viewed by The New York Times, praising Israel for "cracking down" on the attacks.

When members of Congress pushed for accountability over the killings of nine Palestinian Americans by Israeli settlers and security forces, he suppressed a detailed report that the embassy staff had written, effectively stonewalling lawmakers' efforts to gain information, according to multiple officials briefed on the matter.

Soon after arriving in Jerusalem, Mr. Milstein began insisting on approving communications from the embassy section that handles Palestinian affairs, multiple officials with direct knowledge of the process said. The flow of cables plummeted from several a week to a few a month, as some staffers refrained from writing reports for fear that Mr. Milstein would block or rewrite them, these officials said.

Mr. Milstein's interventions go far beyond those of any recent predecessor, several officials said. They and others said they were speaking out of concern that officials in Washington were getting a distorted view of Israeli actions through core diplomatic channels.

Mr. Milstein's efforts have helped insulate Israel's right-wing government against potential blowback from a Trump Administration that has been its closest ally.

Only about one-third of Israelis want Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remain in office, according to an October 2026 survey by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Agam Institute

Israel under Netanyahu is every bit the apartheid nation that South Africa was, but Israel doesn't have the guts that South Africa displayed in ending apartheid and going to a full on one person, one vote, share the power, democracy.

Republicans won't comment on this, because Republicans think doctoring reports to make Netanyahu look good is the right thing to do.

Israel under Netanyahu is every bit the apartheid nation** that South Africa was, but Israel doesn't have the guts that South Africa displayed in ending apartheid and going to a full on one person, one vote, share the power, democracy.

** Apartheid was a legally enforced system of racial segregation in South Africa that gave political, social, and economic power to the white minority while restricting where the nonwhite majority could live, work, study, travel, and vote. **

You may not realize that Israel has been a democratic state (parliamentary democracy, like many in Europe), with "one person, one vote" for every citizen of Israel since inception, including sizeable (over 21%) minority of Arab population, who have their own parties, are members of Knesset (Parliament), judiciary and Supreme Court, and allowing for religious exemptions, like military service and serving kosher or halal food in hospitals or prisons.

For example, Arabs in Israel own or operate more than half of pharmacies.

And Israel will have scheduled elections in about two weeks, on October 27, according to their democratic system of government.

en.wikipedia.org - Israeli system of government

By contrast, nearly all-Arab populations of Gaza had their last elections in 2006, and has been under Hamas management since 2007, when they threw PA members and their families from the rooftops, and West Bank where Mahmood Abbas (KGB alias 'Krotov') is now into his 21st year of his 4-year term... he's been "elected" to... actually, "inherited" after Arafat (KGB alias 'Alef') died - sounds much more like apartheid?

You'll be hard-pressed to name some neighboring countries of Israel in the Middle East with a democratic system of government that has been present since 1948, even while they fought the wars imposed on them by Arab states, sponsored by Soviet Union initially, and later number of terrorist proxies financed and trained by Iran-Russia axis.

That makes sense, it's actually not a bad result for Netanyahu's Likud party, in line with most .

Only about a third of Israelis want the main opposition, former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot's new party Yashar, to become PM, and they are very close, according to latest polls - each bloc has 52 seats which are short of 61 needed to form a majority government... and there are number of smaller parties, including Arab parties and Democrat party (each with about 10% in recent polls).

If no one party gets majority, they can offer smaller parties to join to form the "minority government" or form the so-called shared "unity government", which happened with Likud and Naftali Bennett party in 2021-2022, just months before October 7, 2023.

That's very much like in many European multi-party social democracies.

We here go into November 3 elections with both major parties having negative favorability polls - according to RCP, GOP is at -17.1, and Democrats are at -14.9, and undecided at still very large 8%... so it's kind of a race to the bottom - the "negative enthusiasm" advantage is relative.

Plenty of time and opportunities for either party to screw things up even more, but that's democracy... not apartheid.
