A biosecurity breach has come to light in Queensland, Australia, where 323 vials containing live viruses, including Hendra virus, Lyssavirus, and Hantavirus, have gone missing. The breach, which occurred in 2021, was only discovered in August 2023, prompting an investigation into the lapses in protocol. Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls disclosed that nearly 100 of the missing vials contained Hendra virus, a pathogen with a fatality rate of 57 percent in humans. This virus, discovered in the 1990s, is transmitted from horses to humans and has caused devastating impacts on infected individuals and industries alike. "Hendra virus has a 57 percent fatality rate in humans and has had a devastating impact on those who have been infected, their families, and on the veterinary and equine industries in areas where the virus spills over," said Raina Plowright, a professor at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, as reported by Newsweek.

Now even the FBI and CISA, the US cyber defense agency, are warning Americans to use responsibly encrypted messaging and phone calls where they can. The backdrop is the Chinese hacking of US networks that is reportedly "ongoing and likely larger in scale than previously understood." Fully encrypted comms is the best defense against this compromise, and Americans are being urged to use that wherever possible. read more

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre faced immediate backlash online after nearly doubling the number of Americans who purportedly approve of President Biden's sweeping pardon for his son. President Biden issued a sweeping pardon for Hunter Biden on Sunday after he had repeatedly said he would not do so. The first son had been convicted in two separate federal cases earlier this year. He pled guilty to federal tax charges in September, and was convicted of three felony gun charges in June after lying on a mandatory gun purchase form by saying he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs. For over a year, the president and Jean-Pierre repeatedly insisted Hunter would not get a pardon. In her first televised White House press briefing since the pardon, the press secretary was bombarded with questions from reporters. read more
