Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, December 08, 2024

The lawsuits, all of which are being heard in Federal District Court in Washington, were largely brought by police officers and members of Congress who claim they were harmed when a mob of Mr. Trump's supporters broke into the Capitol on Jan. 6.

#12 Rewind a little bit Corky, I was watching the news on January 7th. Pelosi and her team, and your fellow Drudge Reporters were shredding the Capitol Police. Accusing them of assisting the rioters, opening the doors for them and giving them directions to the chambers. ACAB was on full display. It took a few days before the focus groups reported that wasn't a good look and the new talking points came out. suddenly Dem politicians were thanking officers for their service. It took you guys a little longer to come around. Too tight a hairpin turn from the Summer of Love riots for many of you to make. Anyone who says that isn't how it went is a liar.

But I also have acknowledged the good officers.

I was literally the only person here defending Capitol Police in the weeks after Jan 6, the rest of you were calling for the resignations of their leadership and terminations of the rank and file for their failure to protect the whiny ass legislators who were in no actual danger whatsoever but wanted to take selfie videos instead of following the 15 layer safety plan in place for them every single day.

Yes, it was a full blown riot, and lots of people are doing well deserved time in prison. but the only members of Congress that even witnessed it was the ones who refused to leave the impacted areas when they were ordered to. There are so many redundant levels of protection in the Capitol safety plan. I know, I worked there.

Back then I noted the videos of Capital Police officers opening doors. But I also noted that they may have been doing it to try to quell the mob attacking the Capitol, i.e., at that point they knew they were in a losing proposition, so they went to alternative tactics.

Looking at the videos of the Capital Police trying to protect the Capitol from the mob, why should they not be praised for their service?

Or maybe, just possibly, what was seen and reported on was cops letting insurrectionist scum through the barricades and America loving patriots, in their anger at this attack on the heart of our democracy falsely blamed the police, but after a few days, when additional information and context became available the truth came out that the police shown letting the insurrectionist scum in were at a distinct tactical disadvantage and thus while it appeared one way the reality was another way. You know, how an adult will correct themselves when shown facts.

As far as the ACAB, I can only say that what we saw on January 6 by the Capital Police was what cops should be doing, protecting the constitution of the US from internal enemies. I do not view any of those police officers as bastards. I am glad they did their duty and put themselves in harms way to stop the insurrectionist scum from achieving their goal of destroying this country.

Unfortunately, the rest of the system failed and we are back at death's door.

The one consolation I will take is that the magat scum will suffer far more than I.

You may recall me actually TELLING you that, because I am familiar with the area nd knew that, for example, the criticisms of them moving barricades, allegedly to let people into an area were actually being moved to direct people OUT of the confined grounds to the surrounding streets.

Same with images of officers inviting the, into certain areas, when in fact, they were "welcoming" them towards the hallways that led back away from the chambers and evacuation routes.

"Looking at the videos of the Capital Police trying to protect the Capitol from the mob, why should they not be praised for their service?"

Yeah, Nancy and friends (and y'all) come around after more footage got out, but the initial reporting treated police like they were all coconspirators in on the whole thing.

#26 | Posted by Miranda7 at 2024-12-08 09:01 PM | Reply

Early on when Trump knowingly riled up and sent an armed crowd of his supporters to the Capitol, there was some thinking on the left that the Capitol police had been subverted and wouldn't stand up against the insurrectionists.

That may be what you are remembering, M7.

It quickly became obvious that wasn't the case, and the Police performed their jobs well as they could.

I have not posted comments against the Capital police. Period. Full Stop.

Maybe you did not see the comments I did post?

My opinion and comments at the time were not the result of a focus group, as you seem to allege.

My opinion and comments at the time were the result of a Trump-fueled mob attacking the Constitution.

My comments in support of the Capital Police were, and I still uphold them, in support of police providing protection against an unruly mob (I'm being kind in that latter comment, fwiw).

But I have to ask, why, after all this time, are you raising this unsubstantiated allegation?

Why is this so important to you now?

Why now? The hypocrisy and insincerity of folks who invoke the injured cops of J6 are often the same people who figuratively pissed all over the cops who were attacked in the streets for weeks on end the previous summer. It is disgusting.

- the cops who were attacked in the streets for weeks on end the previous summer

Were in some cases wrongly attacked by people protesting deaths at the cops' hands.

The cops at the Capitol were attacked by a purposeful crowd of Trump supporters bent on stopping the peaceful transfer of power in this country.

These two things are both important, but one is a Constitutional crisis, the other is bad cops, who although not the majority, are nonetheless despicable.

OK, this seems to be more than just J6 for you.

And I will say, there were issues about the comments of "the previous summer." But those issues are not where this thread has evolved into. Or do you want it to go there?

And, I will say, OK, repeat, the comments of that previous summer were not good, imo.

You're walking. And you don't always realize it
But you're always falling
With each step, you fall forward slightly
And then catch yourself from falling

Over and over, you're falling

And this is how you can be walking and falling

I DO remember when the discussion here was lively, and banterous, and filled with intelligent and vigorous disagreement. It has gotten to the point where there is one accepted platform of beliefs (left), and anyone who expresses an opposing viewpoint (more to the right) is branded as part of the enemy camp, and the rest take turns bashing and childishly insulting the one who dared to step off the narrow line.

If all ya got is ad hominem, why bother? Do some of you get off on just stomping people or what?

#36 Thanks Laura, didn't know you could do that. I welcome your effort. There were many threads, and you will find me there.

Ironically, I reappeared here a couple days before Jan 6, when I stumbled cross. Thread about Lauren Boebert wanting to carry a gun in the Capitol. At the time I didn't know who the hell she was, but I was reacting to some of you ranting that it was ridiculous for her to want to be reed, because the Capitol was one of the safest buildings in the world. I begged to differ, the Capitol was the site of many violent attacks over the years, and I got shouted down for that. Then a couple days later Jan 6 happened. Next thing you know I got a message so,embody had requested my profile info and eventually I got a visit from the FBI, asking what I knew about Jan 6 before it happened. Not sure if those two were related, because my profile is pretty well anonymized, but it would t take a rocket scientist to put my bio details together and find me.

In hindsight Lauren Bobo obviously knew what was going down.

So Laura, if you find that thread from Jan 5, pull it out so I can see who insisted nothing bad could ever happen at the Capitol. Pretty much everything I said came true and a little vindication would feel good.

Remember the heroic SS agent gunning down the insurrectionist scum trying to harm representatives?

Remember the heroic picture of Capitol Police pointing guns at the House Chamber doors protecting several representatives with their lives?

Remember watching the insurrectionist scum attacking a Capitol Police officer with a crutch?

Remember the images of the scrum beneath the rotunda between the police and the insurrectionist scum?

Remember the video of the Capitol Police officer with his head stuck in a door by insurrection scum mob pushing?

Yes, there was some confusion over what was happening, but the fact of the matter is people were righteously pissed at the insurrectionist scum. I for one was wondering why they weren't setting up .50 cal machine guns and cutting down scores of the insurrectionist scum. But I MIGHT have been overreacting, maybe. Personally, I sometimes think it might have done our country a bit of good in the long run if a few hundred insurrectionist scum were cut down that day, Perhaps, just maybe, people would have understood the seriousness of the vile crime being perpetrated.

I distinctly remember an interview with a magat scum during the insurrection acting like trying to overthrow the government was no big deal, she gave her name and was only upset cause she got tear gassed. She clearly has no ------- idea of what she was doing. A LOT of magat scum still don't.

I'm speaking in general terms about the bulk of DR posters and just landed on this thread to get triggered on. I appreciate you. You are fair people. That seems to be a rather drastic different aspect to what you have been espousing.

So now, it is "pretty much everything I said" ....

Ok LMPY, now you are playing word games. I think you are training your AI maybe? I'll answer this one but I can't be running around in circles. The "pretty much everything I said" is referring to the posts I made before Jan 6, where I was disagreeing with people basically saying the Capitol was the safest building in the world, and I was explaining that it was vulnerable to attack and had been attacked many times, including while I was working there. Nothing on the scale of J6, but there were some major disturbances, bombs and a couple shootings inside the building over the years.

ALL of my prior comments are true. I have no reason to lie and nothing to gain from it. I worked in a profession where lying is career ending, married a person who had huge trust issues before we met and adopted an abused child who needs complete transparency to safe. Lying just isn't something I do. If you think you are going to catch me in a lie, I invite you to give it your all. You will not succeed.

I recall something entirely different.

I recall CERTAIN drudge retorters accusing the capitol police of being in on the insurrection scheme and opening the doors and allowing the "peaceful tourists" to come in the Capitol because those tourists had legitimate concerns.

Trumpers have been trying to rewrite history ever since.

The rest of us who watched the day unfold on TV in horror knew better.

There were many lies being told in the early days ... and are still being told today. Apparently.

The Capitol Police welcomed them in ... .
It was merely a "protest" with a "legitimate grievance" ...
The rioters were "unarmed" ... .
The riot was orchestrated by left-wing groups or the FBI...

I had a Lieutenant at one time that would just stand up in the roll call room and yell. He didn't single out individuals, he just chewed out all of us collectively. Of course, the hardest working officers listened, internalized the criticism and felt defensive. The lousy officers that truly deserved it barely noticed, walked out smiling, unaffected.

That is what I did here yesterday.. Just like my Lt, I yelled at everyone, without paying mind that that the people who deserved to hear it weren't even on this thread. Some of the finest people on the DR listened and took to heart what I said and reacted defensively. Your responses were warranted, and I overreacted. The officer who shot Ashli Babbit was legally justified to use of deadly force to protect the lives of others. Ironically, so were the officers fighting off the rioters at the exterior doors, but I don't think that would have gone over very well.

Crowd control training decades ago was based on intimidation backed up with escalating force. People complied because they didn't want to get hit. As a society, we now consider pain compliance methods brutal, but they haven't come up with effective tactics to replace them.

It is interesting how some folks justify use of force against one group (J6 rioters) vs another (BLM rioters). According to some posters, the REASON they are rioting makes all the difference. Morally, I get where you are coming from, but the laws concerning Police Use of Force do not. A police officer being hit with sticks, flags, bats, rocks, etc doesn't have time to take a moment to reflect on the motivations of the person perpetrating that behavior. Violent behavior is violent behavior.

I got a lot of heat for tying together the Summer 2020 riots with January 2021. From the standpoint of a police officer in the middle of that crowd fighting to stay conscious and upright, there is very little difference.

I agree completely.

... It is interesting how some folks justify use of force against one group (J6 rioters) vs another (BLM rioters). According to some posters, the REASON they are rioting makes all the difference. ...

The REASON they are rioting does make a difference, but not in the one-on-one crimes against police officers.

The difference, imo, is in what the protesters are trying to accomplish, how many of the protesters turn to violence to accomplish that goal, and if there is organization behind the violence-oriented rioters.

Demonstrations and Political Violence in America: New Data for Summer 2020
acleddata.com

... Nationwide Demonstrations

While the US has long been home to a vibrant protest environment, demonstrations surged to new levels in 2020. Between 24 May and 22 August, ACLED records more than 10,600 demonstration events across the country. Over 10,100 of these -- or nearly 95% -- involve peaceful protesters. Fewer than 570 -- or approximately 5% -- involve demonstrators engaging in violence. ...

So of the 10,000 demonstrations in202, about 5% had violence.

Of the demonstrations that occurred on January 6 to overturn the election results, 100% turned violent.

So, yeah, I agree 100% that violence against a police officer is wrong and should be punished, I would also caution about false equivalencies.

#119 I took a look at your link. I have never heard of ACCLED, but there were so many factual errors I stopped reading the article. You may want to reconsider them as a reliable source of information. Can you spot the misrepresentations in the paragraph below? There are enough to make it seem deliberate.

While Floyd's killing ignited the demonstrations, the protest movement has also organized around other victims of police violence and racism across the country. In August 2019, police officers confronted Elijah McClain while he was walking home from a convenience store in Aurora, Colorado. McClain died after authorities reportedly tackled him, put him in a carotid hold, and had first responders inject him with ketamine (The Cut, 11 August 2020). At the start of 2020, Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed by a former police officer and his son while out jogging in south Georgia (New York Times, 24 June 2020). The assailants claim they suspected him of breaking into nearby homes. In Louisville, Kentucky, police raided the wrong home3 while attempting to serve a warrant and exchanged gunfire with one of the occupants; his partner, Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old paramedic who was sleeping at the time,4 was shot and killed by the officers (New York Times, 1 September 2020). Demonstrations over Floyd's killing have also called for justice in these cases and other past incidents that remain unresolved. In many local communities, protests marking Floyd's death have doubled as acts of remembrance for people like Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray, and Trayvon Martin " whose killing in 2012 originally sparked the BLM movement (CNN, 26 February 2017). Even amid the current round of demonstrations, new cases have been added to the list, from Rayshard Brooks, an unarmed Black man killed by police in Atlanta, Georgia (CNN, 15 June 2020; New York Times, 22 June 2020), to Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man shot seven times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin (CBS News, 26 August 2020).5

What of the stats I quoted from that article are incorrect? And what sites can you cite to counter those stats?

I mean, if there were so many factual errors, you should be able to say why.

... While Floyd's killing ignited the demonstrations, the protest movement has also organized around other victims of police violence and racism across the country. ...

Well, yeah.

As the link in #119 shows. 10,000 demonstrations.

I do not disagree about that.

My point was, and still is, comparing the mostly peaceful BLM protests to the violent insurrection attempt on January 6, 2021 is a false equivalence.

And, yes, I do willing admit that some protesters in those BLM protests became violent. And also any person who assaults a police officer should face Justice.

But I just do not see the apparent need to place an equivalence upon protesting an unjustified death to an attempt to overthrow the Constitution.

The only "equivalence" I made was limited to the perspective of a police officer who is being physically assaulted during a riot. His/her experience is the same regardless of whether it was June 6th or January 6th. The officers injured and killed in the BLM riots deserve the same level of acknowledgement. That is not "false equivalence.

As to the ACCLED story, I have not disputed your statistics. The factual errors that jumped out at me were from the paragraph I quoted (which is why I quoted it), and they were deliberately misleading enough for me to dismiss the entire article as untrustworthy. That paragraph contains several false or misleading statements about specific incidents of police involved deaths. The news media irresponsibly spread many falsehoods, which helped fuel the most violent protests. I think it is important for the reporting to be accurate, not to defend the officers or minimize their actions, but to keep things in perspective and react based on facts rather than deliberately misleading clickbait.

If I point out the errors, I will just be shouted down as a bootlicker,, so I am asking you to try. The errors aren't obvious to you? Maybe you aren't as discerning as you think. Start with Breonna Taylor.

@#123 ... The only "equivalence" I made was limited to the perspective of a police officer who is being physically assaulted during a riot. ...

Yeah, in that aspect, you and I agree. Period. Full stop.

... The officers injured and killed in the BLM riots ...

That's where I may have issues.

So, yes, during the BLM protests, some police officers had been assaulted.

And, quite frankly, I hope those who assaulted those officers have to face Justice.

But, that aside, I do object to trying to equate the BLM protests with what happened on January 6, 2021, in any shape ammaner or form.

What happened on January 6, 2021 is a blot on the history of the Country.

It is more than the brave police officers protecting the Capital (and many being injured doing so), that riot was an attempted overthrow of the Country.

... As peaceful protests entered their ninth day in the city, Chicago police announced Saturday they had arrested 1,258 people in three days during the unrest that swept Chicago after the death of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police.

More than half of those arrests were related to criminal conduct tied to looting and destruction of property, officials said. Officers recovered 135 guns and made 62 arrests on gun-related offenses, officials said.

In addition, 130 police officers were injured between 5 p.m. May 29 and midnight May 31, department officials said. The unrest began to quiet on June 2, officials said.

Reason for the double post...

Simple...

In editing the comment I messed up the order of what I was saying.

@#125 is the correct version.

Apologies are offered for wasting your time with a bad post.

I said THE officers. I didn't give a count, so if your issue is with the numbers ... that I didn't post ... from random articles ... .that YOU just now posted, to argue against a claim ... .. that I didn't make. Hmmmmmm.

So back to what I did post, a paragraph from the ACCLED article you posted where I asked you to call out the obvious falsehoods. Twice, in 119 and 123. I even gave you a hint. Not up for that today?
