BURLINGAME: The California Teachers Association, today, filed a lawsuit against the withholding of nearly $6 billion in constitutionally guaranteed Prop. 98 funding from California public schools in the 2025-2026 and 2024-25 school years. These funds were guaranteed to public schools through Prop. 98, enshrined in the California constitution for nearly 40 years. Read more
A federal appellate court has upheld a decision allowing Hamtramck to ban Pride flags on city-owned property. The ruling, issued Aug. 21 by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, affirmed the Sept. 2025 dismissal by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan of a challenge to Hamtramck's 2023 ban on flying Pride and other group flags on city-owned flagpoles. The court held that even assuming the poles had previously been a forum for private speech, the city is permitted to change the purpose of that forum and restrict the poles to specified flags, making the display government speech. A sculpture inspired by a desire to bring a contemporary "everywoman" to Trafalgar Square has been unveiled on London's Fourth Plinth. Lady In Blue by New York artist Tschabalala Self, which pays homage to a young, metropolitan woman, is the 16th artwork to feature on the plinth since 1998. Sen. Jon Husted fired his campaign's political director Friday after discovering the staffer had posted Nazi imagery on social media and made playlists of songs celebrating Rhodesia, an unrecognized south African state often touted by white supremacists. Stephen Woytek, who joined the Ohio Republican's campaign last month, had posted profile photos depicting Nazi officers on his Facebook page and published links to a military reenactment group whose members dress up as Nazi officers. Woytek himself is pictured wearing the attire with the members of the group in photos from 2018, when he was 16 years old, according to The Washington Post, which first reported the social media activity earlier Friday. A campaign spokesperson described Woytek as a "lieutenant in the U.S. Army" who studies military history and routinely "reenacts historical battles," but said that Husted "quickly" opted to remove him from his staff after learning of the posts.
A University of Houston faculty member and graduate student has been suspended after being confronted on campus by a child predator fighting group. UH confirmed the suspension Thursday afternoon after Eyewitness News inquired about a Kick livestream showing him confessing to buying child porn and messaging minors in a conversation with Alex Rosen of the group Poaching Predators. Eyewitness News isn't naming the faculty member since he hasn't been criminally charged. Read more

John Malkovich has canceled a planned performance in Israel after promoters circulated a quote attributed to the American actor that he said was completely false. A recent press release quoted Malkovich as saying: "I am thrilled to return to Israel and am looking forward to meeting the warm Israeli audience once again, to whom I feel a strong closeness and solidarity." The quote appeared in some Israeli and U.S. media outlets. Malkovich told The Hollywood Reporter that he "never made the statements that were quoted, nor was I consulted before they were printed." "I did not utter these phrases, and they most certainly are not approved by me, nor do they reflect my feelings," he said.
