Young men veer Right as economic prospects dwindle

Young men like Tasker, seen as a solidly Democratic group less than two decades ago, have been shifting further to the right politically as their economic outlook has been on a downward trajectory, especially among those without a college degree, said pollsters and social scientists. While the economy has been a top issue for many voters, it's been a particularly salient one for young men and one tied into their wider cultural ideals about their place in society and wanting to be a provider for their families.

More

"The economic and employment picture for younger men without college degrees is significantly worse than previous generations," said Dan Cox, director of the Survey Center on American Life at the American Enterprise Institute, whose research has focused on young adults. "These sort of traditional norms around masculinity and what it means to be a man and a husband are wrapped up in economic success, and that makes it really, really challenging when their economic outlook is not as bright."

Comments

It's been like this before when FDR slapped down the Golden Age Oligarchs, and it needs to happen again now with the Age of Corporate Personhood Oligarchs.

"We the People" is just a quaint old saying in the Constitution when Big Money rules both Houses under rules they wrote.

And they own the Supreme Court... and the Executive, especially when Republicans are in office.

Interestingly, Harris is running on what is really a FDR-ish platform.

Young men without college degrees back were most young men, and they knew who their enemies were in the Banks and Industries... they cheered Bonnie and Clyde when they robbed banks, and hid them out.

They are only going to be hurt worse with all the new Debt Trump plans to pile on them, so they need to act in their own best long term interests rather than 'think' they are 'sticking to the man!'.

They are only sticking themselves.

Cut the crap Corky. You've been selling this FDRish rhetoric since 2008 with each nominee of the Democratic party. We haven't had a FDRish candidate in reality. Aren't you tired of shilling for the DNC?? I mean seriously.

Seriously, Laura, she wants to raise taxes on billionaires and take care of gramma.

And help trandgenders, even some in prison I hear.

I guess that could all be against Steinism.

#9 | Posted by Hans at 2024-10-13 10:18 PM

Sour grapes.

These losers should pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.

Or so that's what I've been told.

What's funny (in a sad way) is that they're turning to the very people and policies that caused their problems to begin with. The vast majority of what MAGA complains about is the predictable result of decades of their voting and blindly following the GOP and bowing down to their corporate idols. Now that it's affecting them and not just "those people," they're pissed and want to act like it's a new problem that's targeting them.

Name a president from the democratic party in the last 50 years who hasn't ran on that platform?

#12 | Posted by eberly at 2024-10-14 09:25 AM

JPW misses the message.

Govt is holding them down by their bootstraps, so they pivot.

#13 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2024-10-14 09:50 AM

I didn't miss the message at all.

This is all excuses and whining because they're not receiving what they feel entitled to.

This? Gullible stupidity, nothing more, nothing less.

"Trump can run America like a business and Kamala would run it as a classroom," Tasker said. "Trump would care about how Americans can get the most money, how we can care for the most people, and keep America first."

Are you being disingenuous by amplifying this garbage? Or are you just not well informed?

I'm with Laura.

Democrats have very few solid policy positions to actually address young men's economic prospects.

Harris should be shouting from the rooftops about taking on corporate price gouging and fair pay for blue collar workers.

But she isn't. Price gouging is an afterthought and there is nothing for blue collar worker pay.

-Harris should be shouting from the rooftops about taking on corporate price gouging

Didn't she just collect $1 billion in donations?

you think some of it might have come with some strings attached? One being "don't start ragging on us about price gouging"

Traditionally, the unions supported democrat candidates, not so much anymore. Democrats made labor a lot of promises over the years and either outright lied or didn't deliver for one reason or the other (usually another lie(s). Democrats aren't that much different than republicans when it comes to their elite donors - they cater to them.

So, if you're trying to feed your family with abortion rights and enforcing pronoun usage it's going to get tough out there.

It would appear that the Kumquat Pol Pot is going blackface for the remainder of the campaign.

Must be his way of appealing to young black men.

He was, no doubt, inspired by boaz.

Young men veer Right as economic prospects dwindle

What economic prospects are dwindling?

Though the narrative is GenZ doesn't want to work.

Now there's not enough work?

It's not the "economic prospect" that's the issue. It's the wages being paid for the work being demanded.

Millions of immigrants aren't coming to America for no reason.

Republicans couldn't care less what these young men do as long and the fall in line and die quietly in a ditch.

#27 | Posted by ClownShack at 2024-10-14 05:14 PM

Dems are at least going to TRY to make the billionaires pay in Bills that Republicans will kill.

There just needs to be less Republicans, and Trump is helping with that.

What they are not doing is begging Big Oil for a Billion Dollar bribe to get whatever they want AND offering a huge extension of the Debt Disaster Tax Cuts for Billionaires and Corporations that LFT will meekly and stupidly pay for.

And who votes for bills to kill CU and provide publicly financed elections almost every year, which are killed by Republicans?

You know who.

Trumpers are so like Charley Brown and the football. Lucy is the Republican who moves the ball to make him miss.... then claims he's no good as a kicker.

They fall for every time, too.

Obama and Biden were and are busy trying to keep a Cult-led Republican Party that gives Billionaires anything and everything they want.... and then make them Gov Advisors who sell to the Gov.

Your feeble attempt to make your Orange Reality real is feeble.

But hey, your misogynism and racism is pretty strong, so you make a good traitor, just like Trump.

WE need a whole new system. Parliamentary proportional representation.

A MUCH WEAKER EXECUTIVE.

The Supreme Court serves limited terms and is selected by both Houses of Congress given equal weight in selection.

More Weight given to Minority Opinions at the policy level meaning multiple Parties and coalition government....

No Winner Take All Elections.

Congress ALONE can initiate War. The President is stripped of war making perogatives.

States can secede if they can't get with the program.

Well, that was fun, Sitz.

But it doesn't change the fact that government isn't doing anything government hasn't been doing.

The problem is the consequences of corporate-driven policy (mostly enacted by GOP, but some Dem as well) was usually borne by others, so middle America, even the lower end of middle America, were fine with it as it still gave them a semblance of "success." "Success" meant cheap stuff. Lots and lots of cheap stuff.

Which is why the vast majority of America has had zero to very little savings my entire life. The same problems that existed when I first started paying attention to politics in college still exist today, just worse as the problematic policies that caused them to have been further entrenched and widened.

Immigration? Everyone accepts the cheaper produce, food, construction costs ect while acting fauxraged during election season.

Poor or stagnant wages? Been that way my entire life.

Costs of goods and services? Have been going up every year since I was born and inflation during COVID has hit globally hard.

Housing costs? Has been out of reach for most of my generation for as long as I've been interested in buying one. Funny enough, the most successful in that regard are people I went to high school with because housing in the area of NYS where I grew up is still absurdly comparatively cheap. Literally, a house on the market right now is over $100K less than I sold mine for about a year ago and it's twice the size...

This is a self-inflicted would and the people most responsible for it are the ones that are, inexplicably, being turned to to "fix it."

I completely agree.

Their policy planks are terrible and don't address the middle's primary concerns. That's compounded by their typically poor messaging as well.
