Gen Z is saying no to drugs, as the percentage of students who abstained from drugs reached record levels this year, according to research from the University of Michigan.

... This study is the latest in a series that has shown Gen Z, those born between 1997 and 2012) having little to no interest in drugs or alcohol.

In July, a study found that 64 percent of legal-drinking-age Gen Zers in the United States said they had not consumed alcohol in the six months leading up to May, according to the International Wine and Spirits Record (IWSR), a global drinks data and analytics provider. This data reflects a generational shift in attitude toward alcohol.

What We Know

The study defines abstention as no use of alcohol, marijuana, nicotine cigarettes, or e-cigarettes within the past 30 days.

In 2024, abstention rates reached 67 percent for 12th graders, a notable increase from 53 percent in 2017, when this measure was first recorded.

Among 10th graders, the abstention rate was 80 percent, up from 69 percent in 2017, and for eighth graders, it reached 90 percent, compared to 87 percent in 2017.

Good for them!

I'd love to still be around to see how they cope when their bodies are creaking and cracking and hurting from old age. As someone who beat myself up with some manual labor when I was younger, I much prefer dealing with my pain with cannabis over lots of prescription drugs. I do take Celebrex to help with arthritis. But as an Nsaid, I worry about some eventual effects to my liver or kidneys.

They are young. Bless their hearts.

What until they get tired of all the pain and suffering of life and watching family and friends suffer or even die all around you. (Or get deported)

Wait until they are older and they have to live with all the bad memories and all the regrets of what they could have done with their lives instead of playing video games and trying to be an"influencer" sinks in.

If they don't decide to do drugs then they will start drinking just like 80% of Americans do.

Because drinking alcohol is still socially acceptable. And probably always will be.

I asked my two daughters (24 & 21) If they believed this was true. Surprisingly, they both agreed with the results of this study.

Anything that grew under a cow patty in East Texas near the college was fair game for honest hippies. Cows didn't seem to mind. But the farmers weren't all that happy about it.

If you hadn't noticed, it's not really a partying time out there right now. Thanks to fascist propaganda, we're in a cold civil war and the fascist side has just seized all branches of power against the will of the majority of the country. There's a mass extinction going on, the rich have sucked all the wealth out of the economy, and the planet is fighting back against us.

To be able to get high and exuberant makes you seem really out of the loop, or tone deaf, or just ignorant to the danger of the situation the world is in.

Lots more of these kids have been medicated with Adderall and different drugs to get their parents through their kids' childhoods.

15. Absolutely. Last thing they need is a psychosis-inducing chemical. I've got millennial kids teaching Gen Zers. No way would they want the problems of kids today.
