Johnson re-elected as House Speaker

In some high-stakes political drama, the House of Representatives on Friday voted to reelect House Speaker Mike Johnson to lead the 119th Congress by a razor-thin margin.

Matt Gaetz, the former Florida representative, engineered the ouster of Speaker Mike Johnson's predecessor. Now, he could play a role in the outcome this time as well. Gaetz declared that Johnson would be elected "on the first vote."[image or embed]

Has Musk threatened to campaign against anyone who doesn't vote for Johnson yet?

America has the best government Musk could buy.

Democracy is dead.

We're living in an oligarchy.

If Johnson is adept at substantial fundraising, he'll be safe. Fundraising is the speaker's primary function.

We're living in an oligarchy.

Been that way since 11/24/63

There may be a little drama. But I'd bet that Johnson will be Speaker at the end of the day.

I stand by my over/under of ballots to elect Johnson as Speaker at 4...

Soros?

Who's that?

I've heard of this boogeyman, yet I've never seen any proof of his existence.

Funny how much you despise "Soros" yet gleefully cheer on Musk.

It's almost as if you don't give a shht about money in politics, as long as it's fueling your political agenda.

You're a partisan hack.

Musk: "If you don't do as I command, I will fund your opposition.

Deplorable Trumping MAGAts: "But Soros!"

Soros must have died before I was born, because I have never seen or heard about him outside of rightwing conspiracy theories.

Current consequences for Maga include their funding of tax cuts for President Musk and the Billionaires... and yet another dysfunctional Trumpers House.

My prediction for Speaker is. after 17 votes, Hulk Hogan!

Somewhere Wissy is happy.

Speaker Johnson, done on the first vote.

Speaker Johnson, done on the first vote.

Looks like republicans heeded President Musk's warning.

God Bless President Musk.

#13 | Posted by ClownShack at 2025-01-03 02:40 PM

It wasn't the first vote.

Norman and Self switched their votes after a back room deal. still counts as the first round vote. Mike gets the Speakership by 3 votes - 215 to 218.

#17 | Posted by Alexandrite at 2025-01-03 02:46 PM

Looks like the HoR functions more smoothly without Gaetz there to disrupt the process.

The freshman class of magats are growing up.

But, I love grilled cheese sandwiches.

Especially with a bowl of tomato soup.

George Soros:

George Soros is an American investor and philanthropist. As of October 2023, he had a net worth of US$6.7 billion, having donated more than $32 billion to the Open Society Foundations, of which $15 billion has already been distributed, representing 64% of his original fortune. In 2020, Forbes called Soros the "most generous giver".

No wonder FishPaw and Deplorable Trumping MAGAts hate Soros.

They worship greed and hate at the alter of Trump.

#26 | Posted by ClownShack at 2025-01-03 04:16 PM

Wait. There's more:

Numerous far-right theorists have promoted claims that characterize Soros as a dangerous "puppet master" behind alleged global plots.

Deplorable Trumping MAGAts love their conspiracy theories.

They're all addicted to QANonsense.

You're clearly bad at math.

#28 | Posted by ClownShack at 2025-01-03 04:21 PM

Did he even get all of his own Party's votes?

I heard that Trump had to call at least two of them before the vote... something about horse heads in their beds.

Hakeem Jeffries addresses the 119th Congress following House speaker vote

Love it that he slapped them on the back of their heads with a bible verse first.

#30 | Posted by Corky at 2025-01-03 04:54 PM

"There are NO Election Deniers on our side of the Aisle."

Jeffries does a great job in a short speech, telling the other side, who will only have the slightest of majorities, which is a little better than Trump not winning even half of the votes... and much more realistic than the silly, "Mandate!" lies we hear...

... telling Johnson to his face where the Line is drawn on cutting Social Security and Medicaid to give Leon and the Oligarchs, who currently pay less as a percent of their income in taxes, and often no taxes at all, than YOU do.

Very good speech!

America is
bigger than any one campaign any one
election or any one
individual

America the land of the free
and the home of the brave let us never
forget that our country is free not
simply because we are strong America is
strong because we are
free

that
freedom is now under assault there are
some in this country who apparently
believe that the freedom of Economic
Opportunity that made them wealthy
should not apply to everyone else

our
message to that crowd is simple
Democrats will never abandon the Long
Walk toward Freedom we will fight hard
to defend the freedom of opportunity
that makes the American dream possible
we will fight hard fight hard for the
freedom to vote and to fight for a
government of the People by the people
and for the people

we will fight for the
freedom to organize and join a union of
your choice we will fight to defend the
free enterprise
system but work hard to make sure that
it actually works for working class
Americans

and we will always defend a
woman's freedom to make her own
reproductive Health Care decisions

America promises one nation under God
indivisible with liberty and justice for
all that's the America house Democrats
will fight hard to preserve God bless
you God bless the House of
Representatives may God continue to
bless the United States of
America

After the election of Spkr Johnson, 11 members of the House Freedom caucus signed a letter of warning to the newly-elected Spkr Johnson, ~we're watching.~

Freedom Caucus board sends warning shot to Johnson despite making him Speaker
thehill.com

... Board members on the hard-line conservative House Freedom Caucus sent a warning shot to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) shortly after he was reelected Friday, despite the members voting to let him retain the gavel.

The letter, signed by 11 members and led by Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-Md.) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), said that they voted for Johnson to be Speaker "because of our steadfast support of President Trump and to ensure the timely certification of his electors," in reference to a Monday certification of the 2024 election.

"We did this despite our sincere reservations regarding the Speaker's track record over the past 15 months," the letter said. ...

Yeah, as I noted previously, Pres Trump was in favor of Spkr Johnson's re-election only so that the November election could be certified and he be declared President. A transaction, one that he likely presented during his phone calls to the dissenting House members to get them to switch their votes.

I also note that the House rules have been changed.

Now, instead of just one member being able to file a Motion to Vacate, it now takes 9 Republican members of the House to file such a motion.

That makes it quite interesting that 11 members of the Freedom Caucus signed that ~we are watching you~ letter.
