Because we agreed to defend them if they gave up their nukes. They honored their end of the bargain. We need to honor ours without trying to extort protection money etc from them in exchange for more help. This is definitely dirty pool on Trump's part. We should all be ashamed of this.

If we're there we aren't abandoning them. Instead, we're investing in their future.

Did agreeing to defend them mean we'll do it for perpetually for free and not be entitled to be compensated in some way?

This is a win/win solution being proposed.

Also, our remaining in Ukraine will reduce the likelihood of Putin invading again.

This liberal is quite glad about the minerals deal. I have been told by people in Ukraine that this war is about two things; warm water ports in Crimea and access to those minersals by the United States. Geographically Russia had and still does have access to the same minerals in mines located just north of of Donbas across the border in Russia. So the goal was for Russia to own Donbas and control the supply of rare earth minerals and Crimea so they can have the ports they want.
This deal will insure that Ukraine gets all the weapons they need to fight the Russians for as long as it takes and Russia may have to end the war because of the costs in both men and money.
I still can't stand Trump but it seems he is shifting away from Putin and I am very glad about that.
