According to the National Education Association, Florida is one of the worst states in the country for average teacher salaries, falling at 50th for pay, with only West Virginia faring worse.

Or why they won't bother coming to FL in the first place. Republikans seem to cleave to hellscape government. Real pigs.

Where have all the teachers gone? Florida needs more than 4,000 (January 2024)
news.wfsu.org

... The Florida Education Association, the state's largest teachers union, says Florida still needs some 4,000 teachers to fill in-demand instructional and classroom aide roles. ...

The state also needs almost 3,500 support staff including bus drivers and cafeteria workers.

That's an improvement from August, when the state still needed 7,000 teachers and about 5,000 support staff to start the year.

But FEA president Andrew Spar says the current numbers are still too high, writing, "A shortage of more than 4,000 teachers is more than the population of teachers in 19 of Florida's smallest counties combined."

The FEA says improving teacher pay and working conditions, spending more on mental health resources in schools, and keeping politics out of the classroom could help attract and keep teachers in Florida.

Florida ranks 48th in the nation for teacher salary and 43rd for per student spending. ...

Another question...

With all the people moving to Florida, are there enough schools for the children?

With all the people moving to Florida, are there enough schools for the children?

Aren't most people moving to Florida old and retired?

#5 | Posted by REDIAL at 2024-05-29 12:29 PM | Reply

No, they aren't all old and retired. There are a lot of people from Blue states that are MAGAts moving here. There are the FODs (Fans of DeSantis) that are moving here. The demographics are shifting as a result. Republicans overtook Democrats in Voter Registration in 2021. DeSantis declared all beaches open and started his COVID friendly policies just 7 months before setting the "tone." It accelerated from there.

Today voter registration breaks down as:
5,243,299 Repubican
4,351,265 Democratic

Also, to me this post ties in with the "Florida Educators Trained to Teach Students Christian Nationalism" post.

Republicans are doing all they can to turn this state into ------ state. They're doing really well at it.

Speaking as a former educator who now lives in FL, I'd advise anyone I cared about who sought a career in the field at any level to think long and hard before even considering taking up a position in FL. The MAGAt mob has pretty much sunk education in the state. I'm talking about education beyond learning a bit of reading, writing, and ciphering(!), depending on special interests' needs and requirements. Mimicking their boorish idol, the state's pols have spent their time catering to and cynically whipping up the same type of mob you see at a Trumpf hate rally. "I love the uneducated." After all, they're the bottom of the wretched base. Folks who crave "alternative facts" are not into education.

I remember the threads about Florida colleges going out of business, especially the HBU's. And tourism going broke. Says more about the people that flock here to vacation, live and or never leave. BUT FLORIDA. BUT FLORIDA. BUT FLORIDA.

So... with that demographic shift towards MAGA and Republicans, quality education likely will not be a priority.

Quality education is subjective.

Seems like parents in Florida define it as memorizing the Bible and adhering to it.

It's insane.

They should at least move onto the lord of the rings books or the Harry Potter series.

They're such better stories and have just as much magic and fantasy as the Bible.

In the late '60s we were living in Florida when our first son was born. Our next door neighbor was principal of the elementary school and he told us to leave the state before he started school.

Slavery was great.

It's why the 13th amendment exists.

Sadly, the definition of quality education has become politically based.

That leads me to another question...

Why does the current GOP seem to have the need to avoid teaching about the history of the Country, among other things?

But, I'll go with that question for now.

I bet there's not a shortage of licensed teachers. Just a shortage of people willing to work under these conditions, which is true in many states.
