Alexander J. Motyl: It is, at one and the same time, both a colony and an aspiring empire. It can't be both, however, and sooner rather than later Russia will be forced into one or the other direction.

All the signs point to a disheartening conclusion for the Kremlin's wannabe empire-builders: Russia will succeed as a colony but fail as an empire.

"It's often said that Putin has effectively transformed his country into a vassal of China. That's true, but Russia's relationship with its much more powerful neighbor to the south is more accurately termed colonial.

Colonies are locally administered territories that are subordinate to the political and economic priorities set by foreign powers. Colonies are not fully sovereign, inasmuch as they don't make the decisions that determine their fate.

Seen in this light, Putin's Russia is as much a colony of China as medieval Muscovy was a colony of the Mongol Empire."

Whole article is quite good.

OpEd: Together and Apart: The Conundrum of the China-Russia Partnership (October 2023)
asiasociety.org

... Although the war in Ukraine and China's competition with the United States have accelerated ties between China and Russia, the two nations have been growing closer for the last four decades. This fact raises a number of questions: What unites China and Russia? What forces are driving them apart? How has the war in Ukraine affected the dynamics of their relationship? And what does their growing relationship mean for the West and for the world?

As we look at the partnership between Beijing and Moscow today, we could be forgiven for thinking of them as fully fledged allies. Their interests converge in so many areas, from trade and multilateral diplomacy to their resentment of Western liberal democracy and joint military drills.

But China and Russia are also drawn to each other by virtue of their strategic geography, alignment of values and views of their current leaders, common enemy in Washington, natural economic complementarities, and opportunism. ...

China has finished goods.

Russia has raw materials.

Russia doesn't mind getting it's Hands dirty in War.

China has a relationship of partial dependence on the US for markets.

China is the Money, Russia is the Enforcer and main source of Raw materials.

It Sounds like a Tight and geographically compact Arrangement, Actually.

Tough Nut to Crack if the West gets Squirrelly.

What did you think about the article when you read it, MW?

Oh, wait.... you didn't.

Okay I read it.

What do you want me to say?

Opinions Vary.

I don't agree with any of his basic premises.

China is backing Russia for access to resources they will need it they stop selling so much crap to the US. If market access gets too difficult for political reasons.

China is hedging it's bets.

Russia needs electronics and components for weapons. Both regimes are estranged from the West to different degrees.

Russia needs a market for Oil and Gas. China needs both.

World war against these two Allies is Suicide.

Even if it stays Conventional.

In my Humble Opinion.

@#6 ... What do you want me to say? ...

My guess would be that it is not what anyone here might want you to say.

But what do the talking points issued to your alias instruct you to say?

China: Tendency to play a waiting game, often long, well before a pounce. Try to play it relatively cool.

Russia? Puhleeze.

Of course you don't.

His opinion is that of a professor of political science at Rutgers University, and a specialist on Ukraine, Russia, and the Soviet Union.

You aren't any of those things. You are infamous here as a Putin Apologist, though, so there's that.

In 2000 years, the earth will be populated by cockroaches and the Chinese. That's intended as a huge compliment to the latter.

Native Americans also acted with multiple generations down the line in mind. We weren't too fond of them either.

EARTHMUSE

He [Putin] ran his army straight into the mud in Ukraine.

I'm thinking that he launched his attack, single-0, on February 21, 2021, because Trump's fed him a load of bull about overturning the 2020 election.

Lord knows, Trump tried. January 6th, fake electors, recounts galore, threats, bribery and corrosion of state officials, theft of voting machines, accusations against voting machine companies like Dominion and Smartmatic, (who in return sued Trump, and won, for defamation), vicious accusations against innocent workers in a Georgia counting room, paid attorneys to float unfounded lies on FOX about the honesty of the election. (some of which have already lost their license and others indicted for co-conspiracy).

Maybe Mr. Putin believed that Trump would succeed to overturn the election, who knows? But whether or not that was the case, Mr. Putin is making a colossal mistake trusting Donald Trump again.

One that I hope the United States never makes again.

Wrong. What they really have in common is the ability to make a lot of cheap crappy stuff. Because of corruption and shoddy craftsmanship Russia makes ---- weapons and China makes ---- everything else and probably weapons as well. I dare say in a war with the West they would lose. And you are a loser to side with them you bloody traitor.
