After what started as an eight-day mission, US astronauts Sunita "Suni" Williams and Barry "Butch" Wilmore have now spent the better part of a month on their space capsule attached to the International Space Station as engineers work out the problems with Starliner.

Guess this pretty much puts to restthe company's old gung-ho "If It Isn't Boeing, I'm Not Going" slogan.

@#3 ... Guess this pretty much puts to restthe company's old gung-ho "If It Isn't Boeing, I'm Not Going" slogan. ...

Yup.

When Boeing went from engineer management of the company to MBA management of the company after the merger, profit (and not safety) seems to have become its calling card.

Boeing CEO defends his safety record, spars with senators and apologizes to crash victims' relatives (June 18, 2024)

... "This hearing is a moment of reckoning," the subcommittee chairman, Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said. "It's about a company, a once iconic company, that somehow lost its way."

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., placed the blame squarely on Calhoun, saying that the man who became CEO in January 2020 had been too focused on the bottom line.

"You are cutting corners, you are eliminating safety procedures, you are sticking it to your employees, you are cutting back jobs because you are trying to squeeze very piece of profit you can out of this company," Hawley said, his voice rising. "You are strip-mining Boeing."

Hawley repeatedly mentioned Calhoun's compensation for last year, valued at $32.8 million, and asked the CEO why he hasn't resigned. ...

While i sometimes disagree (strongly) with Sen Hawley, I think his opinion in this matter is spot-on.

I said when they launched that it was foolish to ride a new Boeing capsule into space. Sadly I was not wrong.

@#3

I said a similar thing, along the lines of, ~I'd not want to be one of the first to ride it into space.~

that made me laugh...it reminded me of a TV show I watched growing up in KC, called "Bowlin' with Molen" and the infamous 7-10 split for the $500 grand prize...about 70 years ago

Reminds me of when Reagan was in office and the decision was made to push ahead with a manned launch, even though there was ice everywhere. In this case, the leaks were known, but Boeing needed a win. Now it has two stranded astronauts, and one hopes they take another ride home than the one what brought them.

The Starliner astronauts having to be rescued by a Soyuz or Dragon would be the entirely fitting end to the Starliner saga. It has been a long tale of Boeing/ULA tripping over their own dick repeatedly.

The astronauts are probably glad they're getting the extra time in space.
