Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, June 16, 2025

OMAHA, Neb. " Every seat in the waiting area of Glenn Valley Foods was occupied with people filling out job applications early Thursday afternoon, two days after the meatpacking plant became the center of the largest worksiteimmigration raid in the state of Nebraska so far this year. Dozens of prospective employees, many of them Spanish speakers, had been coming in and out of the plant all day. Some were hoping to land a new job; others were coming in for training.

The company's president said they have continuously used E-Verify as part of their hiring process. The system is operated by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Social Security Administration to let employers know if a prospective employee has legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Every employee at Glenn Valley Foods, including those who were detained by ICE, has been approved through E-Verify, Hartmann said. When he told this to DHS during the raid, an agency official described the system they operate as flawed and easy to cheat.

All those ------- liberals on here saying that Americans won't do those jobs are proven 100% wrong, AGAIN. Also, you can see from this raid that blaming the employer is not the solution as they are using the government programs that are designed to be easy for illegals to circumvent.

Trump is doing what needed to be done for 30 years - he closed the border and is ridding the country of the illegals that cost WAY WAY more than what they contribute in unskilled labor.

There is between 1M-4M undocumented children in the US K-12 public schools. That costs the nation between $18B and $75B in spending on their education alone - throw in the health care and law enforcement and they are a giant sinkhole in the economy.

Lastly, and my biggest reason for 100% deporting 100% of the illegals - THEY SUPPRESS WAGES. We have people out of the workforce and working poor BECAUSE OF THE ILLEGALS. Flooding the job market with millions of unskilled illegals hurts the most vulnerable Americans.

Increasing the costs will increase the price. And deporting field workers will create shortages, causing edible produce to rot in the fields.

What percentage are the farm workers?
What percentage are the hotel workers?
What percentage work at restaurants?
What percentage are meatpacking plant workers?

You need to seriously downgrade your percentage, or start using asterisks.

"Increasing the costs will increase the price."

Labor costs go up a bit but are offset by rapidly declining energy prices. Meanwhile, rent prices decrease as 10M illegals are kicked out of the country and we save hundreds of billions on welfare, public schools, law enforcement, etc. So, prices will go DOWN.

"And deporting field workers will create shortages, causing edible produce to rot in the fields."

If the farmer was wholly reliant on illegals to harvest their crops, they deserve to go bankrupt. Your logic is akin to saying that we cannot arrest drug dealers because it would hurt the new car market.

Nope - I want 100% deported. Literally every other industrialized nation on earth is able to figure this out except for the US because American workers are screwed over by big corporations and Democrats (now, they are the same thing). We can have a legal work permit program for foreign workers which denies birthright citizenship and forbids their kids from using the public schools and other public services.

If the farmer had 25-50% of illegals working, again, they deserve to go bankrupt. Their use of illegal labor has distorted market prices. This impacts the farmers that do things the right way and also stunts automation. While the farmer makes profit, society losses BILLIONS. Yes, I am willing to pay $0.50 more for my lettuce if it means the public school decline stops and we can afford medical care for poor Americans.

Let's bring some actual math to this discuss - basically, liberal talkpoint Kryptonite:

The average strawberry picker can pick between 80-120 pounds of strawberries per hour.
The average strawberry picker wage in California is $16.71/hour.
That means the labor cost for strawberries is between $0.14 and $0.20 per pound.

The average price per pound of strawberries in the US is between $3-$4/pound.
That means the picker labor component as a % of the strawberry price is between 3.5% - 7.0%.

If we were to double wages to $33.42 per hour and the grocery stores and farmers passed on 100% of the labor cost to customers, the cost of strawberries would increase to $3.20 - $4.14 per pound.

If we cannot get Americans to pick strawberries for $33.42/hour - an annualized wage of $69,500 (assuming no overtime or weekends) - then we can start to bring in guest workers with the conditions that I mentioned above. However, if we cannot get Americans at that price, it is due to having too good of a welfare state.

www.npr.org

Nebraska is one of the top meat producers in the U.S. It also has one of the worst labor shortages in the country. For every 100 jobs, there are only 39 workers. A report released last January by the state's economic chamber says Nebraska has no choice but to welcome immigrants to, quote, "address the workforce gap." But that message runs counter to President-elect Trump's pledge to carry out mass deportations. NPR's Jasmine Garsd reports.

JASMINE GARSD, BYLINE: Every so often Al Juhnke, executive director of the Nebraska Pork Producers Association, says that he'll get a phone call from a farmer. It goes something like this.

AL JUHNKE: Al, I got a great idea.

GARSD: On how to solve Nebraska's severe labor shortage.

JUHNKE: Why don't we invite any immigrant - legal, illegal, I don't care - invite them to Nebraska, 'cause we have lots of openings out on our farm, and we need help.

GARSD: Juhnke says attracting labor is not about wages. The average pay for a meat trimmer is close to $18 an hour, well above the state minimum of 13.50.

JUHNKE: People say, well, just double or triple the pay. You'll get United States citizens to work. No, you won't.

GARSD: Nebraska needs immigrants. But Nebraskans overwhelmingly voted for incoming President Donald Trump, who has promised to carry out mass deportations. When asked about it, Juhnke echoes what a lot of people here say.

Get rid of fraud and abuse and medicaid costs go down. Stop providing care to children of illegals, and costs go down. Stop illegals from suppressing US wages and there are less poor people needing medicaid.

The only thing Americans have said goodbye to are emergency rooms in the US as the flood of illegals are bankrupted the business. A big reason why US medical care is so unaffordable for the middle class is the illegals directly using emergency services vs. standard hospital care.

The estimated $30B they contribute? That is a drop in the bucket compared to the K-12 school costs alone. California spend ~$4B on illegals medicaid last year - how much do you think the total spend was nationwide?

Illegals are a net drag on the economy and it is not even close - and this is before you take into account the societal costs such as suppressing wages for US workers and turning the public schools into failure factories.

Actually it's the opposite. They keep communities thriving. There's ample evidence to back that up.

As you ------- are too stupid and/or scared to post the number for lettuce:

The average lettuce picker can pick 800 pounds of lettuce per hour (machine assisted with mix of iceberg and romaine).
The average lettuce picker wage in California is $16.71/hour.
That means the labor cost for lettuce is $0.02 per pound.

The average price per pound of lettuce in the US is between $1.3-$3/pound.
That means the picker labor component as a % of the lettuce price is between 0.7% - 1.4%.

If we were to double wages to $33.42 per hour and the grocery stores and farmers passed on 100% of the labor cost to customers, the cost of lettuce would increase to $1.52 - $3.02 per pound.

So there you have it - a grand total of $0.02/lb of lettuce and we can be illegal alien free. I 100% support that.

I didn't include it because I just touched on a few of the items. Nowhere did I say it was a comprehensive list - that is something you are adding now because you lose every argument you have with me, so it is easier for you to make ---- up and claim victory.

It is estimated that illegals suppress US wages by $80-$120B annually - and that was based on 2016 when the number of illegals was much lower.

Even for our native (non-illegal) Hispanics in the US, their net lifetime contribution is -$86,847 per household - the illegals drain way, way more than that.

At this point, it's silly.

Meaning US consumers would be paying an additional $100B annually. Why do all your solutions result in inflationary actions?

" their net lifetime contribution is -$86,847 per household - the illegals drain way, way more than that."

"If we were to double wages to $33.42 per hour "
And who is going to drive to the growing fields every day to harvest?"

If Americans are unwilling to work for $70,000 harvesting crops (which I don't think will be the case), then the case for automation just becomes greater and the need for labor is reduced. Even in the case of lettuce pickers - the semi-automated process doubles the output per worker. So, increase automation and labor needs are greatly reduced so even if you cannot replace workers 1:1 at $33.42/hour, it does not matter because the need is less.

Second, if the above proves impossible - which is won't - you use guest worker programs with limited rights (like no birthright citizenship for their kids or access to public schools). You know Germany grows lettuce too - right? They get Eastern Europeans to pick it for 12 Euro/hour. ----, we could probably import white German citizen to pick in California for $33.42/hour.

"Every equation you reference is employing fantasy: American workers WILL show up
#31 | Posted by Danforth"

As proven in the article linked - THEY DO! What part of that don't you understand? If some ------- lazy deepblue -------- dweller wants welfare because they refuse to move/work for $33.42/hour - they can starve on the street.

Well, I give you credit for at least taking off the mask now and dropping your prior line - "I want to control immigration by punishing the employers" - it is 100% clear that you want your brown slave labor regardless of how much it hurts working class Americans. Lettuce being $0.02/lb more is unacceptable to you even if you would save $3000+ in taxes supporting illegals and the displaced American workers. Talk about being a financial illiterate. You have outdone yourself this time.

This is why the Democrats are at 20% approval and Trump is winning on the immigration issue. Deport them all - you will thank us in 10 years when we don't need a welfare state any longer.

No scam/cheating needed.

Just read the sign posted in every grocery store.

Once verified (get work authorization), can never ask again.

So even if eventually denied asylum, and have order to remove, company can't fire employee.

Ergo an illegal working at the company, company can't do anything.

My point is, and has always been, both sides attack the symptom, but not the root cause. Fact is, employers have long skirted the law, and rarely been targeted; my guess is Republican Sheriffs in Republican counties with Republican members of the Chambers of Commerce who are the largest contributors to the Sheriff's re-election campaign.

My answer is, and has always been, to accept and embrace reality: these folks are part of the fabric of America. I say treat them with dignity, and let them come out of the shadows. And DEFINITELY educate and vaccinate their kids. As they say, if you think education is expensive, wait until you see the cost of ignorance.

The truth is, American workers are NOT going to drive daily to the fields, nor are they willing to sleep six to a room. As usual, your "answer" employs pure fantasy, like 100% deportation of illegals.

It also guarantees food price spikes, no matter what GIGO you barf into Grok.

On the contrary; SOMEONE was cheating. And the worker knows they are, as well.

"When this happens, you should check your narratives."

My narrative has always been Deport an illegal, and all you've done is hang up a "Job Vacancy" sign; Arrest an employer, and you've choked off the reason for migration.

"even if eventually denied asylum, and have order to remove, company can't fire employee."

Couldn't that be fixed with...what's it called?...a LAW?
