More from the article...

... "Consumers are just spending more," said Charlie Wise, senior vice president of global research and consulting at TransUnion. "Even though the inflation rate is down, that doesn't mean prices are coming down."

To be sure, prices are still rising, albeit at a slower pace than they had been.

The consumer price index -- a key inflation barometer -- has fallen gradually from a 9.1% pandemic-era peak in June 2022 to 3.4% in December 2023.

Meanwhile, households continue to show signs of strain -- more cardholders are carrying debt from month to month or falling behind on payments. ...

CC and auto loan delinquencies are soaring too.

Yup.

The "spending consumer" that has helped to power the economy through the inflation-controlling high interest rates seems to be heading for an unpleasant short- and, mid-term.

The high interest rates are not helping those credit card balances, either. ...

My guess is that there is a distinct possibility that this will not end well.

not to be ---- about this but is this the average per credit card or is that the average balance households have on ALL their credit cards?

That balance doesn't concern me all that much unless it's merely an average per card.....

wow. That is a lot. I start to sweat if my CC balance ever exceeds 2k...

Typically it is zero, but during vacation season, I've been known to drop
a K or 2 on the card, to make sure everyone has a good time...

We place all of our monthly purchases/spending, and bills on one credit card for the dollar points, but also pay it off each month.

Biden needs consumers to keep spending. Trump needs them to slow down.

Trumpzis want a slower economy, but they can't seem to keep their credit cards in their pants.

Uh...what?

If you're not paying your bills with credit cards to accrue points, you're wasting money.

#9 Good point. I need a better points card.

Uh...what?

What have you been doing for the last 15 years?

I don't pay for domestic flights in the US. Half of my hotel rooms I book are free because of points. And...Priority Pass, Centurion Lounge, Marriott M Club, Delta Sky Club...cards are your friend.

"What have you been doing for the last 15 years?"

Putting points in my Roth IRA.

I might go Amex Patinum or maybe a Hilton one. Those seem to make the most sense for where I'm at. I don't travel much; around five flights a year.

I worked with someone who earned airfare plus hotel on Hawaiian Airlines. So all they paid for was booze and food. Took about 18 months to earn a free trip to Hawaii. But this was years ago.

What does one expect credit card balances to do if internet rates jump 10%.

Time to bring the rates back down. The banks have made enough off of us for now.
