Chloe Combi looks at what GenZers like to do: "I love Heathrow. We take edibles, usually chocolate truffles with hash, and just have a good time soaking up the atmosphere."

More from the 2021 article...

... Whenever Gen Z culture is discussed, it tends to be through the lens of technology " TikTok crazes, YouTube drama or Clubhouse debates. But this insinuates that young people are merely two-dimensional beings whose only real relationship is with a screen. Which, of course, it is not.

During the creation of a podcast series about teenagers, called You Don't Know Me, I became fascinated with the question of what Gen Z do, when they're not locked down and online, and actually out in the world? It was a bit of a bleak picture " they inhabit something of a cultural wasteland, where the appeal of pubs and clubs has dwindled, money is tight and where social spaces designed for teenagers have all but vanished.

But there was one destination that came up so frequently and in such colourful detail, particularly for teenagers from poorer backgrounds, that it began to seem like an undiscovered subculture. It's what I came to christen "Airport Culture". ...

OK, I was in a checkout line at a local department store. I overheard to twenty-somethings talking (not difficult to overhear, they were not tying to be soft in their voices).

One asked the other about her plans for Friday evening. The response was short and simple, "the airport."

Wait, what?!?!?! Or maybe, more appropriate for my reaction, WTF???

So I popped int my search engine of choice and found things.

But, I still wonder, were those two having fun with me?

Interesting, but is that even possible in the US? I don't think you can get past security into the terminal areas without a ticket. Is Europe different?

I don't fly often, but most airports I pass through have nothing of interest to see or do u til after you pass through security.

When I worked with a household name in Vegas we got a few spoof pages past the operator like: "Would you please page Mr Rotch? First name Mike" ... and so on. It was hilarious hearing it over the casino PA system.

Amex Centurion Lounges are pretty okay. "Free food and drinks", but they're always on the other side of security so better have a boarding pass to get to it.

This is my nightmare.

If I have anything even remotely resembling PTSD, it's the sense of revulsion I have any time I have to go to the Airport. Anyone who has spent any time in Frankfurt terminal 2 can probably understand.

And out of all the ------ major airports, Heathrow is probably the absolute worst. Depdning on where you're going, you need to make sure you have at least a three-hour layover. Four-hours will give you the opportunity to grab a bite and a cocktail. No centurion lounge at LHR, but there was one I used to frequent. Not bad.

I had to go to FRA last Sunday. And tomorrow. And Wednesday.

I don't mind hanging around airports to watch the planes... Anchorage is great for that. Hanging out in the terminal seems kind of odd. Might be better if you are not flying but limits you to the non-secure side which is usually not that interesting.

I'm old, but the gist of the article is young people (mostly girls) don't have much money and go to the airport to hang out where they won't be hassled by "boys" like they are everywhere else they go.

I'm old and I can see the lure in this, but when I was young I didn't mind being hassled by the boys. That was the whole point of going places with a group of girls.
