Sherrod Brown: Tariffs, when used with a clear and consistent strategy, are a necessary part of any economic policy that looks out for workers. But clear and consistent, Donald Trump's tariffs are not. And his domestic economic agenda does next to nothing to help workers.

Instead of ushering in a better economy where workers are the winners, he is pushing costs higher and hurting small businesses, creating uncertainty that will make manufacturers less likely to invest and create jobs here and inflicting more economic pain on the workers who put their faith in him -- all while endorsing a budget that includes a massive tax cut for the wealthiest 5 percent.

The UAW supports the tariffs. I expect Fain will feign shock when the big three use them to increase automation and relocate in the anti union states.

The MAX was their biggest seller, despite all it's issues.

Yup.

Uncertainty is the anathema of corporate leaders in their planning process.

How can they make mid- and long-term plans when next month is an unknown?

Wow, there is a winning talking about after telling their liberal ------- minions to run around screaming 'tariffs are TAXES' for the last 3 weeks. I guess this douche finally talked to some union members or looked up some old Nancy Pelosi clips on YouTube.

So, now their message has shifted to "tariffs are bad WHEN TRUMP DOES THEM" - I mean, you can't criticize Chinese tariffs when Biden just did the same thing to Chinese EVs less than a year ago unless your voters base is stupid with the memory of a goldfish - and that is what they tried to do for the last 3 weeks - shows how much they respect their base.

This is the equivalent of Kerry's - "I voted for it before I voted against it moment".

Maybe it was tariffs - maybe it was because no one trusts the DEI designed/manufactured flying --------- that keep falling from the sky - maybe it is because Chinese air travel is plummets due to their crashing economy.

www.reuters.com

"Annual passenger yields, a proxy for airfares, fell 12.7% at China Southern, and 12.4% at Air China.
Data from China-based Flight Master shows the average domestic economy class fare in 2024 dropped by 12.1% year-on-year to 767 yuan, or about $105, squeezing profit margins.
China accounts for more than 40% of Asia-Pacific's total passenger traffic, according to airline body IATA.
International ticket prices in China were 32% lower in 2024 than in 2023, compared to 12% lower in Asia as a whole, ForwardKeys data shows."

And yes, this article was before the tariffs were announced. As I told you -------- previously, China's economy was already collapsing - Trump's tariffs is just the final nail in the coffin.

Boeing jet returns to US from China amid tariff war
www.reuters.com

... A Boeing jet earmarked for China was returning to the United States on Friday, flight tracking data showed, as the planemaker's flagship delivery plant outside Shanghai was drawn into a deepening tariff war between Beijing and Washington.

The return of one of several jets waiting for final work and handover to a Chinese carrier at the completion centre in Zhoushan is the latest sign of disruption to deliveries from a breakdown in the industry's decades-old duty-free status.

In a sign that Boeing was preparing for normal business just weeks before U.S. President Donald Trump announced tariffs on April 2, three new 737 MAX planes had flown from Boeing in Seattle to Zhoushan in March.

Another arrived last week at Zhoushan, where Boeing installs interiors and paints liveries before handing over to customers, according to Flightradar24 data.

But on Friday, one of the first batch of jets took off again without being delivered and flew from Zhoushan to the U.S. territory of Guam - one of the stops such flights make as they cross the Pacific - indicating it was heading back to Seattle.

Boeing declined to comment. ...

Provide a link stating clearly that the order was cancelled due to tariffs (meaning increased cost AND NOT the airlines knowing passenger demand is going to further crater). Not speculation from a reporter - an official statement from the company

Because it clearly proves my point that the Chinese economy (including airline industry) was already collapsing - this was before tariffs finish off the job.

China is buying far less oil, no aircraft, no natural gas from us now.
This is just the beginning. As soon as they can find a better source of pork and soybeans, that will be the next hammerstroke to fall. Probably Canada.

Republicans pride themselves on ignorance.

Republicans don't understand China is 15% of global GDP.

Imagine thinking you can lose 15 percent of your customers and it won't hurt your business.

Republicans the dumbest people imaginable.

A vast majority of what the US imports from China, they don't need and/or can easily source from other countries or make in the US.

China cannot say the same. China imports 35% of its food, 60% of its oil, and 42% of its natural gas - these aren't things you can just do without or make in China.

If China cuts out the US, these are global commodities and will simply sell to other countries. If the US cuts out China, these products can try to be dumped in SE Asia and Europe - but those countries are taking steps against it. The US does need Temu and Shein - China NEEDS food and energy.

Here are the top 4 imports by the US from China - none of this ---- could not be produced here or bought from other countries. Hell, IT USED TO BE MADE HERE.

1 Machinery and Mechanical Appliances
2 Consumer Electronics
3 Furniture, Bedding, and Lamps
4 Toys, Games, and Sport Equipment

Here are China's top import categories:

1 oilseeds and grains
2 oil and gas
3 pharmaceutical products
4 semiconductors
5 aerospace products
6 chemicals
7 motor vehicles

Outside of motor vehicles, China needs all of these products. If they cut off US as a supplier, these are globally products that fill the void created by whatever alternative country China sources from.

Soybeans are a global commodity - so, no by definition. It may cause a temporary disruption as countries shift suppliers. But, unless the Chinese decide they are just not going to eat soybeans (which will not happen), it just results in a shift to where they are sent. For seed oils, they have been recycling 'gutter oil' for years already as they have no other options.

"Soybeans are a global commodity"

What percentage of the global market is China?

Think it's about 15%, seeing as China is 15% of global GDP?

Think American soybeans will be competitive in other markets, with import tariffs applied in response to Trump's import tariffs?

#30 | Posted by snoofy at 2025-04-21 08:00 PM | Reply

Trump bailed out soybean farmers in his first term.

Yes, unless everyone just decides to stop eat soybeans. They will probably ship to Japan instead. That is how global commodities work. You dipshits think they will rot in the fields because, well, you are dipshits.

To account for the temporary disruption while supplier shift. Ag in the US is a $1.5T industry and soybeans shipped to China from the US is under $20B. This is not going to break the US ag industry and Trump will protect his most loyal supporters. Again, China cannot do the same unless they simply decide not to eat.

"To account for the temporary disruption"

What caused the disruption?

And why should the President bail out anyone just because markets are disrupted?

"Ag in the US is a $1.5T industry and soybeans shipped to China from the US is under $20B."

Ag is a $1.48T industry since soybeans to China is going from $20B to zero.

"This is not going to break the US ag industry"

Did somebody say that it would break the entire industry? Trump said "Only The Weak Will Fail!"

So it's okay if soybean farmers fail after Trump weakens them with his tariffs, right?

No soybean farmer bailouts this time, right?

Why would any nation buy soybeans from USA at a high tariff when they can buy soybeans from any other producer at low or no tariff?

Now replace "soybeans" with "any agricultural product" and answer it again.

And here you go proving that you have no clue about global trade. Unless people just stop eating food, global soy consumption will continue. China will probably shift to Brazil soybeans and the Brazil soybeans that used to ship to Japan, EU, and SE Asia will now be forced to either buy US soybeans and/or not eat. They will choose to eat.
