... Trump has repeatedly promised to do away with the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of his larger pledges to dramatically shrink the size of government, and he's fond of decrying officials in Democrat-run states hit by past natural disasters and tragedy.

But the president struck a far more somber and sympathetic tone while visiting America's most populous Republican state " highlighting the heartbreak of what happened while effusively praising elected officials and first responders alike.

"The search for the missing continues. The people that are doing it are unbelievable," Trump, seated with officials around a table with emblazoned with a black-and-white "Texas Strong" banner, said at a makeshift emergency operations center inside an expo hall in Kerrville. ...

Trump's Texas visit highlights an us-vs-them approach to disasters
www.reuters.com

... In the days since flash flooding killed at least 120 people in Texas, President Donald Trump has pledged unwavering support for the deep-red state, lauding Republican Governor Greg Abbott and other local officials for their "incredible" response to the July 4 disaster.

That praise, which Trump is likely to repeat during his visit to the flood-ravaged Texas Hill Country on Friday, is a far cry from Trump's harsh criticism of elected Democrats in California when wildfires devastated Los Angeles in January.

While the fires were burning, he accused Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of "gross incompetence." Months later, left-leaning California is seeking more federal dollars to help recover from the catastrophe. ...

ICE Barbie's Delayed Flood Response Caused FEMA to Miss Thousands of Phone Calls
www.thedailybeast.com

... The Federal Emergency Management Agency didn't answer thousands of phone calls after the Texas floods last week because it had fired call center contractors.

Records obtained by The New York Times show that FEMA laid off contractors the night of July 5, when flood waters were receding but still high, and when damage assessment was taking place. It took Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem until Thursday -- five days later -- to renew the contractors' contracts. ...

OK, #6 is what turned up in my search results. And I had not known that.

But this was more of what I was looking for in my search ...

Unpacking reports Noem's cost controls delayed FEMA's Texas flood response

... Noem reportedly issued a directive requiring all contracts and grants over $100,000 to receive her personal sign off for approval. ...

Timeline of reported events

CNN first reported on June 18 that Noem ordered "every contract and grant over $100,000 must now cross her desk for approval," according to a memo obtained by the news company. That includes funding for agencies under DHS, like FEMA, the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Hours later, Federal News Network, a publication for federal employees, published a report corroborating CNN's reporting. CNN's story also cited current and former senior FEMA officials who reportedly warned "the new approval process could severely disrupt the distribution of emergency funds during natural disasters." Each official spoke under the condition of anonymity " except one, quoted below: ....

Black Austin fire chief didn't have time to waste with little white girls

TEXAS FLOODS: In a stunning announcement Austin Fire Chief, Joel G. Baker, is accused by his own firefighters of blocking the deployment of rescue teams to the catastrophic flood zone in central Texas.
According to reports the state of Texas requested help but Chief Baker allegedly said no because of an $800,000 dispute with the state government despite Austin having the best water rescue team in the state.
The union says they specifically trained for Hill County ... for this very moment ...
Below is a statement released by the Austin Firefighters Association.
The Austin Firefighters are outraged by Fire Chief Joel G. Baker's decision to deny the deployment of our highly trained swift water rescue teams to Kerrville until July 4th, despite the State of Texas calling for assistance on July 2nd. Only 3 AFD rescue swimmers were sent"far too late to save lives.
Our Special Operations teams are some of the best in Texas, but because of Chief Baker's refusal to deploy them, lives were likely lost. His decision, based on a misguided attempt to save money, is unforgivable. The department is reimbursed for deployments, but Baker failed to understand that.
Starting Tuesday, we're launching a vote of no confidenence in Chief Baker, and we're holding him"and anyone else responsible"accountable.
We've held off speaking out while victims were still being recovered, but it's time for the community to know the truth.
We hope you stand with us in holding Chief Baker accountable."

Can we add it to the list of all the information you don't want.

Disasters like this were PREDICTED; as were teh effects of Trump gutting weather forecasting and preparedness.

The PREDICTION is that more of the same is coming.

long line of one responder after another.
shakes Trump's hand and steps 2-3 steps to shake the first lady's hand.

every one without fail during those steps removed their headgear to greet
the first lady.

"The state of Texas, No. 1 they do it right and they've done it right for a long time," Trump said. "And it's a very special place to me."

---- right. Texas is much better at killing its citizens. Texas can easily kill 300 due to negligence in a predictable flood while in California only 30 died in the unpredictable LA wildfires.

If the Texas flooding had happened in a blue state, much of CONservative Christianity would have said it's God's will for their liberal sins. But it's crickets when it happens to Republicans.
