Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The U.S. Coast Guard will no longer classify the swastika " an emblem of fascism and white supremacy inextricably linked to the murder of millions of Jews and the deaths of more than 400,000 U.S. troops who died fighting in World War II " as a hate symbol, according to a new policy that takes effect next month. Instead, the Coast Guard will classify the Nazi-era insignia as "potentially divisive" under its new guidelines. The policy, set to take effect Dec. 15, similarly downgrades the classification of nooses and the Confederate flag, though display of the latter remains banned, according to documents reviewed by The Washington Post.

At first I thought this a story from "The Onion."

I wonder what former USAG Merrick Garland, who is Jewish, is thinking about today and the rise of Nazism in the US.

"What could we have done better in four years to permanently end the threat of white supremacist Dummkopf Trumpf?"

If you live in the US and a swastika does not register on your radar as an offensive symbol of hate you should consider getting up to speed, fast, or being identified as a fool, Nazi fetishizing bozo, or both.

A Noose can mean let's lynch all the n------, or maybe it just means you like playing with rope. So hard to tell.

Anyway I saw where the Coast Guard was walking this back; saying they didn't actually do this change.

Story is giving Poe's Law. "Poe's Law is an adage that states it is difficult to distinguish between sincere extreme views and parodies of those views online, especially without clear indicators of intent, like emoticons."

The misuse of the swastika by the Nazis was cultural appropriation at its worst, and it should be recognized as such instead of gifting them a symbol that is still used by billions of people around the world in other contexts. It's like associating all of Islam with the terrorists who committed atrocities using its symbols.

How so?

By "misuse," do you mean having it point the wrong way?

The swastika should be recognized as a symbol of Nazi cultural appropriation?

How's that functionally difference from recognizing the Swastika as a symbol of all the bad things Nazis stand for?
