Correction: Costco sues taxpayers for full refund of tariffs. Trump won't pay a cent, even if they win.

Trump wants $230 million in compensation from DOJ [US Taxpayers]
President Donald Trump is asking the U.S. Department of Justice [US taxpayers] to pay him $230 million in compensation for investigations during his first term and a legal case brought against him after he left office, according to the New York Times.

Corrupt crook is going to corrupt crook.

Speaking of taking money from taxpayers ... Except Costco is asking for money that was illegally taken (arguably from them, although shoppers actually paid the price), while Trump is outright stealing money with his claim which his own lackeys will rubber-stamp.

Re 3

Don't forget the republican congressmen who are suing the taxpayers for $500,000 for peeking at their phones.

I'm just wondering how we can all get in on this latest scam.

Surely the ebil US gubmint has ripped me off somehow.

According to Edward Snowden it has been peeking on all of us, too!

$500,000 dollars please!

Broken promises!

The utter stupidity of you people is astounding.

Costco can sell their products at whatever price they want. Why don't they just bite the bullet like everyone else is doing? Are they the evil capitalists you liberals fear?

Tariffs correct an imbalance that hurts everyone else. Costco should be happy the playing field is being leveled.

You people are idiots.

Is there a coherent thought in that post?

As noted in the article: "In the lawsuit [...] Costco said its business had suffered because of the tariffs [...]."

So a company that says its business suffered from Trump's illegal actions is seeking monetary relief. What is wrong with that?

And if they didn't seek that relief now, they could be precluded from that compensation later, which would open up shareholder lawsuits because the company didn't run its business prudently by protecting its rights. So, once again, what is wrong with Costco filing the lawsuit?

You sort of answer your own question "what's wrong?"

shoppers actually were the damaged party, according to you but Costco should be awarded damages?

Do you really think Costco has a legitimate case? Or is it really about the symbolism of it all?

I think most will agree the tariffs were bad policy but you're arguing they were illegal?

yes, illegal, Eberly. ONLY CONGRESS has the power to levy tariffs and taxes.

Yep. 100%. Unfortunately Congress has been gleefully ceding it's powers to the executive and bureaucracy going back decades.

"shoppers actually were the damaged party, according to you but Costco should be awarded damages?"

Shoppers can't sue Trump for the tariffs, because to do so requires showing direct harm, and shoppers aren't to do that because retailers aren't going to provide them with information on how much of their price tag is specifically due to tariffs.

Costco is also a damaged party. Unlike you and I, Costco has a complete accounting for how adding the cost of the tariffs increases prices and reduces sales.

I'll believe it when Boaz agrees the tariffs were bad policy.
Boaz is currently giving oral to the tariffs, so I won't hold my breath.

Why SHOULD Costco "bite the bullet"? I was told foreign countries were paying the tariffs, weren't you?

#19 | Posted by LegallyYourDead at 2025-12-03 05:34 PM | Reply

#19 I was told the exact same thing: foreign countries were paying the tariffs.

And then there's this bit of fun:

"A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone," says the president
...and just in time for Christmas

If and when SCOTUS overturns Trump's use of tariffs, the federal government will have to refund that $200,000,000,000.00 to corporations.

Not to those of us who had to spend more because of the tariffs.

Nope. That $200,000,000,000.00 will go to the corporations who imported goods and paid the tariffs.

So, you and I paid more for goods over the past whatever months to corporations who paid the federal government the tariffs.

So, when tariffs are refunded, they go back to the corporations, right?

And, will the corporations be sending checks to you and I, because that would be the right thing to do?"

LOL!

Just more transfer of wealth from the poor and middle class to the wealthy.

Almost like it was planned.

And then there's THIS problem:

con't ...

#19 cont ...

And then there's THIS problem:

"A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone," the Trump.

OK, some simple math here

US Population: 342,000,000

US population minus the 10-15% or so ~high-income~ folk: 300,000,000

So, okay, let's go ...

300,000,000 people times $2,000.00 per person is $600,000,000,000.00.

Tariff collection so far in 2025 has been around $200,000,000,000.00.

But we've already determined that that $200,000,000,000.00 was going to go to corporations, right?

So, where will the $600,000,000,000.00 come from?

No matter how you slice or dice it ...
