Robert Duvall was a kind and gentle man. He had that crinkle in his smile that made you think he had some precious secret, all his own. Rest well, Robert.[image or embed]

What an actor's actor. I'd forgotten how much stage work he did prior to getting into films; it shows, on a good way. And he made it look so simple. A true craftsman in a lonely art. And magnificently done. RIP.

From the NYT obit:

From early on, Mr. Duvall enjoyed the life of a supporting actor. "Somebody once said that the best life in the world is the life of a second leading man," Mr. Duvall told The Times. "You travel, you get a per diem, and you've probably got a better part anyway. And you don't have the weight of the entire movie on your shoulders."

Last century Mr Robert Duvall and I remarkably shared a common acquaintance, although we never met.

One of his first roles from a novel which became a film that touched upon racism, childhood innocence, single parenthood, and learning disabilities:

Saw an interview of him saying that his portrayal of Stalin was a role that he felt he did some of his best work in.

I'm not sure I've ever seen that.

"Robert Duvall's portrayal of Joseph Stalin in the 1992 HBO television movie Stalin is widely recognized as a major, acclaimed, and challenging role in his career, for which he won a Golden Globe.

Duvall sought to portray Stalin as a complex human rather than a one-dimensional monster, focusing on his paranoia, cunning, and contradictions."

Duvall was so great in so many films that it's impossible to limit my praise to one movie. I'll just say watch "The Apostle" if you haven't seen it.
