Marvin Gaye's What's Going On... #1 Album Rolling Stones Top 500 Albums All Time 2023 (thread link)

"Tops' bass singer, watched TV coverage of hundreds of club-wielding cops breaking up the People's Park, a protest hub in Berkeley. Aghast at the violence, Benson began to write a song with Motown lyricist Al Cleveland, trying to capture the confusion and pain of the times.

He knew he had something big in his nascent version of "What's Going On," but the rest of the Four Tops weren't interested, and Benson's efforts to get Joan Baez to record it didn't work out, either.

The story of the fight between Barry Gordy and Marvin Gaye over the release of this album is an interesting read.

Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today, yeah

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see

Oh, what's going on (What's going on)
What's going on (What's going on)
What's going on (What's going on)
What's going on (What's going on)
Right on, baby
Right on, baby
Right on

Mother, mother
Everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply 'cause our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today

Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Come on talk to me
So you can see

What's going on (What's going on)
Yeah, what's going on (What's going on)
Tell me what's going on (What's going on)
I'll tell you, what's going on (What's going on)
Right on, baby, right on
Right on, baby
Right on, baby, right on

Sidenote: "Islands in the Stream" was originally a Motown creation which didn't work out, so they gave it to the country-western folks.

You're partially right.

It was written by the BeeGees Gibbs, originally intended for Marvin Gaye.

If we ever talk privately I'll share some insider info about Motown/Marvin Gaye.

Sir Barry Gibb wrote a lot of great songs for a lot of great artists.

"As a songwriter, he shares with John Lennon and Paul McCartney the record for most consecutive Billboard Hot 100 number ones, each having six. In total, he has written or co-written sixteen Billboard Hot 100 number ones."

Also a writer with his brothers of the only song to come with a, "-------- Free Pass"!

Ah, thanks for that info, AU.

Here's a soothing track from that timeframe and composer. Neatly produced: www.youtube.com

I played Bridge the other day, came in second place.

Now off to play Spades.

Nil!

BTW: I shared a common acquaintance with this 80s rocker, but this arena rockster didn't share any insider info with me. Our photograph is hanging in my kitchen: cdn.shopify.com

Semisonic - Down In Flames (1996)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
t's not the pain, that I'm used to it
It's feeling like I'm already dead
I see from a ceiling of misty spirit
Rising from a place in my head

And I never even get to go down
Down in flames

I said, friend you have a life to see
Why do you want to scare me so?
All the suffering and mystery me
I can't even pretend to know

So you never even get to go down
Down in flames
You never even get to go down
Down in flames

We had plans to explore the stars
Be rejected by stage door guards
Mining for gold, the time unreels
Not stifling behind Suburban wheels
Not stifling behind Suburban wheels, yeah

The plan was to burn up when the air was clear
We'd all wear our visors down
An arc welder's spark in the atmosphere
Not this man-sized hole in the ground

"What's Goin' On" - Weather Report

"Weather Report was a pioneering American jazz fusion band (1970"1986) co-led by Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, known for hits like "Birdland" and albums such as Heavy Weather.

While they featured virtuoso bassist Jaco Pastorius, the band is distinct from the North Texas State University Lab Band, which recorded under director Leon Breeden in the 1970s." (Rogers' alma mater as I recall.)

There was some good jazz fusion bands who influenced pop from the late 70s, early 80s.

Popsicle Toes - Michael Franks

"When my baby eats her eggplant ..."

Timeless tune.

Jaco used to play Tuesday nights at a jazz club in in Studio City called The Baked Potato with other top studio musicians. He didn't know how to read music - in an era where arrangers wrote out notation - but made it as a first call studio bassist anyway.

Back in 1997 when the Hale-Bopp comet appeared in our sky, the local college radio station played the song, Scarlet Woman ( www.youtube.com ) a lot.

The song is from Weather Report's Mysterious Traveler (1974) album.

Call - I Don't Wanna (1987)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
I ain't here to hold you when you cry
I ain't here to hold your shaky hand
I ain't here to look you in the eye
Or beg for you to understand

I ain't gonna walk you thru your dreams
Walk you thru this life that we all know
I ain't here to listen while you speak
I ain't here to heal your broken soul
Am I here at all?

I ain't here to tell you what you need
I ain't gonna take a noble stand
I ain't here to look you in the eye
Or beg for you to understand

I can only tell you what I've seen
I can only tell you how it felt
When my heart was crushed so bad inside
Till I felt the hatred slowly melt
I don't wanna

I ain't gonna watch your every move
I ain't gonna dog your every step
I ain't here to shape your every mood
I ain't here to keep your secrets kept

Oh, but if I held you in my arms
If I could squeeze you till we cry
I don't wanna lose this love I feel
I don't wanna lose this fight tonight
I ain't gonna

I ain't here to hold you when you cry
I ain't here to hold your shaky hand
I ain't here to look you in the eye
I don't want you under my command
