Methinks the world's first American Pope will be here for the Fourth of July tomorrow where refugees make their way attempting to make a better life for themselves -- or just plain survive -- in Europe: Pope Leo XIV says GFY to Dummkopf Trumpf and JD Vantz

Trump's Bavarian grandfather skedaddled from obligatory military service and emigrated to the US, at one point operating an eatery and cat house in the Yukon.

I don't remember him singing that.

"AI
Empathy for the Marginalized:

The Torah frequently points to their enslavement as the exact moral basis for ethical behavior.

Because the Hebrews were oppressed foreigners in Egypt, God repeatedly commands them throughout the Law (e.g., in Leviticus and Deuteronomy) to care for the stranger, the widow, and the orphan, specifically reminding them: "for you were slaves in the land of Egypt."

They spent 400 years learning that lesson... and, like the Western Church in this country, have completely forgotten it in modern Israel.

I do love this Pope, I do wonder if even he can elevate the status of women in the Catholic Church. Should be illegal to get tax rebates for a religion if they discriminate on the basis of race or gender. The Mormon church used not to allow black men to be priests, but after some efforts to take that to court, tada, now Black Men can be Mormon leaders. Women, on the other hand, well, you do remember the founders saying that "all men are created equal"...they were not using "male" to indicate both male and female, they really didn't want women to have power.

Many year# ago, I was 16 and staying in NYC at a huge YMCA, I think near the Garment District. One day I walked into a large synagogue - I'd never been inside one - and sat down in the empty building. It was quiet, low-lit, peaceful. I was just resting, basically, taking a break, and curious. Eventually, a man appeared and we talked. He ascertained I was not Jewish, not from NYC, and recommended I returnthe next day, which I did. Congregant friends gathered and laid out a feast to wish an older couple about to visit Israel a good trip and safe return. I was invited into the group, offered food, treated as a welcome stranger. I could also, that Summer, watch Alec Guinness take to the boards and play Dylan Thomas, also plenty of other wonders (a world's fair!) ... but the warmth of people I did not know welcoming a stranger has remained a particularly strong and pleasant memory even after so many decades.
