The latest effort to iron out our understanding of the AMOC and the consequences of its stalling comes in the form of a study published in Nature Communications.

A team of scientists used decades of NASA-acquired atmospheric data and climate simulations to project the evolution of the AMOC, forecasting life-changing shifts for communities around the globe.

"It is well known that the AMOC is a big player in the world's climate system, and that it is slowing down," says Mohima Mimi, a climate dynamics researcher at the University of California, Riverside, and the study's lead author.

"What we didn't know is exactly how the AMOC might impact atmospheric moisture and storms outside the Atlantic region."

The researchers have determined that an amok AMOC could exert significant climatic differences on a worldwide scale, as Mimi explains:

"It turns out a weakening AMOC will strengthen storms across parts of North America by the end of the century, along the California coast in particular, while reducing them over Greenland and the Arctic." ...

I don't see how this is possible things don't just "shut down". The implication that it just "shuts down" means heat is distributed evenly.... this just isn't happening while the sun is burning and the earth is rotating.

Here's a fundamental principle about weather you learn when getting your PPL ...

If water or air has differences in temperature/densities it will move, known as pressure gradients, and convection currents.

AMOC is a big player in the world's climate system,

I doubt it's a bigger player than the Pacific Ocean.

It is a major component of Earth's ocean circulation system and plays an important role in the planet's climate system.

The AMOC includes Atlantic currents at the surface and at great depths that are driven by changes in weather, temperature and salinity.

Those currents comprise half of the global thermohaline circulation that includes the flow of major ocean currents, the other half being the Southern Ocean overturning circulation.[2]

The AMOC is composed of a northward flow of warm, more saline water in the Atlantic's upper layers and a southward, return flow of cold, less salty, deep water. Warm water from the south is more saline ('halocline') because of the higher evaporation rate in the tropical zone. The warm saline water forms the upper layer of the ocean ('thermocline'), but when this layer cools down, the density of the salty water increases, making it sink into the deep.

This is an important part of the motor of the AMOC system. The limbs are linked by regions of overturning in the Nordic Seas and the Southern Ocean. Overturning sites are associated with intense exchanges of heat, dissolved oxygen, carbon and other nutrients, and very important for the ocean's ecosystems and its function as a carbon sink.[3][4]

Changes in the strength of the AMOC can affect multiple elements of the climate system.[1]:2238 ...
