Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Every civilization that has ever existed worshipped something. Not most of them " all of them. And for a long time the academic world told us that meant religion evolved upward " that primitive people invented spirits, those spirits became gods, and monotheism came last as the most sophisticated development.

That story is wrong.

And the evidence that contradicts it has been sitting in the anthropological and archaeological record for over a century.

In this video we follow the actual evidence " from the oldest human structure ever discovered, to the most isolated cultures on earth, to the linguistic roots of languages that predate recorded history " and show that the world's most ancient religious expressions don't point toward primitive animism groping upward.

Everyone has opinions... few are good at expressing their rationale.

Which is what I like about Scott.

Fighting over the proper fantasy. Wake me when the "winner" is proven.

Life's a circle, not always an ascent.

I'm just glad #s 2&4 "myth" and "fantasy", kept open minds as they checked out the video... as if.

Folks haven't figured it out, but people drawing cave art tens of thousands of years ago in places that were virtually impossible to reach or even light up enough to draw in were up to something. And the ideas for what they were drawing ...

I don't care what, just that it is.

But I don't think they were driven by monotheism. From my own readings.

More interesting to me is the Axial Age.

A million and a half flies can't be wrong!

So ... . Watched the video corky. Not really impressed. Talkers like to hear themselves talk I guess. And they really love rationalizing and justifying their chosen religion.

BTW - I thought it was already clear that Egypt had one of the first monotheistic religions but it was the Pharaoh Akhenaten who tried to promote the first one true god, Aten. So is this guy trying to say Joesph influenced Akhenaten? Of course that's possible. Some do seem to learn from history. While others never do.

Didnt hear any mention of Akhenaten. Who truly tried out monotheism (unsuccessfully) for the first time on a national scale.

Indeed. An interesting bit of history many don't know. The back story of before, during, and after is fascinating.
