White woman enslaved by Native Americans; liberals hate her

n 1861, a small new England town erected a monument to Hannah Duston " possibly the first in the U.S. to honor a woman. But not everyone thinks Duston was a hero. Almost 200 years earlier, Duston had been kidnapped by Native Americans from her home in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and placed with a Native American family. In the dead of night, she picked up a tomahawk and bludgeoned six sleeping children and four sleeping adults to death.

Though Duston's husband was able to escape with eight of their children, Duston, her newborn daughter, and her nurse, Mary Neff, were taken captive. About 10 other colonists were also kidnapped from Haverhill.

According to the story Duston later told Puritan minister Cotton Mather, her captors promptly killed her baby by dashing "the Brains of the Infant, against a Tree." She and Neff were then forced to walk for weeks before being placed with a Native American family on an island in the Merrimack River.

What's interesting is the article says she was "placed" with a native american family.

Took great pains to avoid saying she was put into slavery there.

Captivity was a strong theme in the colonial experience from the start. In fact, we have masses of captivity narratives, often steeped in religion and its themes - e.g., lost/redeemed, etc. - and filled with often highly questionable or unverifiable information. Captivity narratives were sensationalistic and quite popular.

Slavery was common in all the past cultures especially where might makes right. Which was very common in the past. Enslaving defeated enemies was a standard economic and political outcome of warfare across the globe.

The woman was a victim of her times. (Thru no choice of her own)

Typical Liberal narratives are that primitive peoples are seen as good and moral, in harmony with nature. At first, the races in North America traded and got along, but soon the natives were provoked to war. By the mid 1800s, they were "the wretched Indians" who had to go.

Liberals aren't the only ones who do that. Both the left and the right like romanticize simpler times to promote their narratives, whether it's collectivism or "rugged individualism". There has always been a problem with presenting a Single Story as a narrative, so much that it devolves into Two-Wrongs-Make-A-Right territory.

Take Capitalism, for example. The Far Left will only ever focus on the negative aspects and excesses of it and never have a nuanced argument about it. They won't acknowledge that some of the historical reactions to it were criminal and terroristic.
