A sixth person in Pennsylvania has died of measles, state health officials said Wednesday.

The person was unvaccinated and a resident of Jefferson County, according to the officials.

This brings the nation's total to seven measles-associated deaths this year, which includes six in Pennsylvania and one in New York.

Pennsylvania has reported 1,467 cases so far this year, becoming the largest outbreak in U.S. recent memory.

If only there was something that could be done to prevent measles...if only.

"Long before COVID-19, America experienced cholera and flu pandemics with hundreds of thousands of associated deaths, as well as lesser outbreaks of illnesses such as diphtheria, polio, and pertussis, all three of which were notorious child-killers. Today, the rarity of those conditions has fostered a false sense of security, and a naive assessment of the natural world. Relinquishing the successes of general vaccine coverage, however, is guaranteed to belie the idea that untainted nature contains all the keys to health and wellness. Our historical moment has enough strife without revisiting past battles fought and won."

@#6 ... Today, the rarity of those conditions has fostered a false sense of security, and a naive assessment of the natural world. ...

If I may be allowed to word that differently ...

Those voices against vaccination do not seem to provide information of the deadliness of the disease they seem to want to ravage our communities with their anti-vaccine diatribes.

Now, the good residents of South Carolina and New York seem to be learning of the consequences of their aversion to measles vaccination.

It saddens me to see such intentional ignorance in action.
