NYC Mayor Eric Adams Indicted for Straw Campaign Contributions

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been charged with five counts connected to improper campaign contributions, according to a sweeping indictment unsealed Thursday morning. "Eric Adams, the defendant, sought and accepted illegal campaign contributions in the form of 'nominee' or 'straw' contributions, meaning that the true contributors conveyed their money through nominal donors, who falsely certified they were contributing their own money," the indictment states.

... Nearly a year after FBI agents seized his phones, New York City Mayor Eric Adams faces an expanding constellation of federal inquiries involving his administration.

In recent weeks, the investigations have produced a drumbeat of subpoenas, raids and whiplash-inducing developments for the first-term Democrat. Federal investigators have visited more than a dozen members of his administration, taking devices from the police commissioner (who then resigned), the head of the public schools and other trusted confidantes both in and out of City Hall.

At least one high-ranking mayoral aide received a subpoena to testify before a grand jury.

Federal prosecutors have declined to discuss the investigations but people familiar with elements of the cases have described multiple, separate inquiries involving senior Adams aides, relatives of those aides, campaign fundraising and possible influence peddling at the police and fire departments.

Adams, a former police captain, has not been accused of wrongdoing and adamantly denies any knowledge of criminal activity.

Here's a look at what we know about the investigations: ...

Update...

New York Mayor Adams' residence searched after criminal charges filed
www.reuters.com

... Federal agents searched New York City Mayor Eric Adams' residence on Thursday morning, after he was indicted on criminal charges following a long-running investigation that has sent the largest U.S. city's government into turmoil.

A black sport utility vehicle with a placard reading "Federal Law Enforcement" on its dashboard was parked outside the mayor's Gracie Mansion home on Manhattan's Upper East Side, according to a Reuters witness.

Around a dozen people in business attire were seen walking on to the mansion's grounds with briefcases and duffel bags, said the witness.

Adams' lawyer Alex Spiro in a statement confirmed the presence of federal agents at Gracie Mansion. He accused authorities of trying "to create a spectacle" and said they had taken the mayor's phone.

"He has not been arrested and looks forward to his day in court," Spiro said.

The exact charges Adams faces remain uncertain, as the indictment was still under seal. It remained unclear whether Adams would be arrested or surrender voluntarily, and when he may appear in court.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan, which brought the charges, declined to comment on Wednesday after the New York Times and other outlets reported that Adams had been indicted by a grand jury, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. ...

Yes comrade that's what happens when your political party isn't a fascist cult.

You prosecute criminals even in your own party.

Shrimp is so used to Republicans disregarding their own crimes that he can't believe some people are still held accountable.

Not defending Mayor Adams but much of what he is accused of seem no worse than things several Supreme Court Justices are doing with impunity or many of Donald Trump's crimes.

#9 | Posted by danni at 2024-09-26 12:41 PM

The support for prosecution of Mayor Adam's for crimes he has been indicted for among pretty much all Democrats - leftist and centrist - tells you all you need to know about the difference between Dems and Trump supporters. Beyond any reasonable doubt the Dems are the Party of law, order, justice and the rejection of impunity for the wealthy and powerful. GOPhers are all getting away with crimes if it benefits their side.

#10 | Posted by moder8 at 2024-09-26 01:04 PM

True... you don't see Dems whining in outrage about, "Lawfare!" when it's one of their party caught outside the law.

Of course, one supposes that they could hire Jeffy to do that for them......

The only crime republicans care about is street crime.

They are the party of lawless leaders and white collar crooks.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams charged with bribery and wire fraud in scheme spanning nearly 10 years
www.nbcnews.com

... New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been hit with five federal charges " including wire fraud, bribery and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national " according to a sprawling 57-page federal indictment unsealed Thursday.

Prosecutors from the Southern District of New York accuse the Democrat of seeking and accepting luxury international travel from wealthy foreign businesspeople and at least one Turkish government official for nearly a decade in exchange for official favors.

In 2017, when he was the Brooklyn Borough President, Adams accepted a heavily discounted stay at the St. Regis Istanbul owned by a businesswoman who "sought to ingratiate herself with Adams," the indictment says.

Although the Bentley Suite for two nights would have cost approximately $7,000, Adams paid less than $600, the indictment says. He also did not disclose the trip as he was requir ...

The first time I saw eric adams on tv I was knew it was only a matter of time before some dirt came out about him.

He set off my conman radar almost as much as trump.

#14 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2024-09-26 02:20 PM

He did have a tendency to come across as a wave of indictments just waiting to happen. And his associates? Whew.

#15 | Posted by Doc_Sarvis at 2024-09-26 02:23 PM

I just saw this on the local NYC news...

abc7ny.com

... Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who has the power to remove Adams from office, told reporters after an event Thursday morning that she had not yet read the indictment but would soon do so and then offer detailed comments on the charges.

"I'm going to take the time I need to review this indictment, see what's embedded with this, but my number one responsibility is to make sure the people of New York city and state of New York are served," Hochul said.

If Adams were to resign, he would be immediately replaced by Jumaane Williams, the city's public advocate ...

From what I understand the NY Governor has never used the ability to remove the Mayor from office.

Truth is every Democrat big city has become an ineffective pathetic mirror image of each other. Incompetence and politics reigns supreme while leading to failed corrupt government. They are all dominated by racist voters and criminals who vote solely based on race, just as officials are appointed based on race not competence.

The recent photo of Eric Adams and others only exemplifies it. The naive residents in these cities only run themselves and their personal opportunities to a good life into the ground.

Give me a break. The GOP forced Santos out before he'd been convicted AND lost his seat in the process. Dems are okay eating their own so long as they don't lose any power in the process.
