GOP Fear Speaker Battle Means 'Can't Certify the Election'

Some Republican allies of House Speaker Mike Johnson are urging President-elect Donald Trump to publicly reaffirm support for him to avoid a lengthy battle to replace him that could delay the certification of Trump's election victory in January.

Republicans hold a 219-215 majority in the House If just 2 GOP in Congress vote against Mike Johnson for Speaker, he loses And Congressman Massie already said he will oppose Johnson So it's possible America will see a prolonged battle over who will become Speaker Again Republicans Can't Govern

"The first vote of the new House, when lawmakers are sworn in on January 3, is on electing a speaker. Then, on January 6, the House will meet to certify the results of the 2024 election.

Republicans elected Johnson as House Speaker in October 2023 after they were unable to agree on a replacement for three weeks after ousting the last speaker, Kevin McCarthy.

But Johnson is now facing a rebellion from House Republicans over his handling of government funding. The GOP's slim majority in the lower chamber means Johnson can afford few defections if he wants to keep his hold on the gavel."

;

"And he told ABC News last Tuesday that he is "not worried about the speaker's vote."

"These are the hard choices that lawmakers have to make, but we will get the job done, as we always do. We will. We will keep moving forward, and in January, we have a new lease on all this," Trump said."

Couldn't there be a temporary Speaker voted upon and appointed for, say, one day, in order to validate the Election results?

Sounds rational, but you forget you're dealing with MAGA.

@#3 ... you forget you're dealing with MAGA. ...

My bad. ;)

"Couldn't there be a temporary Speaker voted upon and appointed for, say, one day, in order to validate the Election results?"

I would hope not and would laugh my ass off if they can't certify the election; perfect irony considering that the MAGA lunatics invaded the Capital specifically to prevent the certification of Biden's victory over Shtrump!

#5 | Posted by danni at 2024-12-29 05:13 PM

"...but you forget you're dealing with MAGA."

These idiots' only plan is to break everything.

Why should this be any different?

#6 | Posted by Angrydad at 2024-12-29 05:18 PM

This is clearly the fault of Joe Biden and the Dems, because they don't support Speaker Johnson just because Johnson's policies are in opposition to those of the Democratic Party. Democrats must get on board with Mike Johnson ...

There seems to be more than a few Republicans in the House who realize where Trump is trying to take the country and don't like the idea of dancing on the end of a string for an imperial presidency.

@#5 ...I would hope not ...

But, might that be what the GOP is reduced to, in order to certify the election results?

So many questions, so few answers ....

@#8 ... There seems to be more than a few Republicans in the House who realize where Trump is trying to take the country and don't like the idea of dancing on the end of a string for an imperial presidency. ...

I agree.

Which is also why I think a vote for a new [long term] House Speaker may not go well.

How many ballots were required before Spkr Johnson was elected to the Speaker position? How long did that process take?

Wouldn't it be a hoot if they held their ground and elected Jeffries?

Unless they're in a safe district, it would probably be their swan song.

Our system is much more efficient. Justin will probably get the boot next week and we'll have a new PM in six weeks.

It would be more than a hoot.

But also, not likely to happen.

My current view is that Minority Leader Jeffries will be stepping back from this issue.

Much more efficient? Based upon what criteria?

OK that aside, yeah.

What is currently occurring in Canada, and Germany, is telling.

Based upon what criteria?

For one thing, election campaigns go a minimum of 36 days to a maximum of 50.

Yeah, but at what cost.

Plus, there's another thing called nipping it in the bud. The House would be a good place to start if they so have the mind.

Not to mention the damage Trump can do in four years and the years of recovery.

Keep in mind that he plans to start cutting social benefits in the next budget go-around in March. Disabled veterans, Medicare, Social Security, housing subsidies, student loans, etc., etc. and anything else he can think of to pay for the next tax break for his wealthy friends that supported him.

He needs the House Speaker in his pocket to do all that.

Yeah, there seems to be that aspect.

But I probably might have gone more with the ability to call such snap elections.

@#19 ... there's another thing called nipping it in the bud. The House would be a good place to start if they so have the mind. ...

Congress has already given the Trump-Musk coalition the finger with the rejection of the budget bill hat Mr Musk proposed.

So there's that.

But, given the slim majority the GOP holds in the House, my current view is ... get yer popcorn ...

...
I lit my purest candle
Close to my window
Hoping it would catch the eye
Of any vagabond who passed it by
And I waited in my fleeting house

Before he came I felt him drawing near
Passing here I felt the anxious fear
But he had come to my door and jeered
And I waited in my fleeting house

Tell me stories, I called to the hobo
Stories of cold, I smiled to the hobo
Stories of old, I knelt to the hobo
And he stood before me in my fleeting house

No, said the hobo, no more tales of time
Don't ask me now to wash away the grime
I can't come in 'cause it's too hard a climb
And he walked away from my fleeting house

Then you'll be damned, I screamed to the hobo
Leave me alone, I wept to the hobo
Turn into stone, I knelt to the hobo
And he walked away from my fleeting house

@#22 ... Why do we keep assuming they want to govern? ...

Ya know, you raise a very valid point.

Do the MAGA politicians descending upon Washington, D.C. (Pres-elect Trump included) actually want to govern, or are they just looking for retribution?

#23 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-12-30 02:54 AM

Waiting for co-presidents in waiting Musk and Trump to tell them what to do. Sorry, GOPers, but transforming yourselves into political eunuchs is an act that cannot be corrected. Even if you had the brains and will to do so. (Which you clearly and sorely lack.). Once a court eunuch in thrall to a mercurial, thieving slob, ever a court eunuch in thrall to a mercurial, thieving slob.

There is a cosmically small chance that the Trumpers in the House will finally realize that the Billionaire Tech Bros and other assorted Industry Oligarchs are Globalists, and, not really being concerned about the plight of the avg American (knowing that they will soon be replaced by Quantum AI ROBOTS!)...

Maybe Loomer and Mrs. Justice Thomas can arrange a nice French-style Madame Guillotine Party at the Capitol on the 6th, eh?

I'm wondering how many House Republicans are so scared of voting against Trump/Johnson that they won't show up for the vote.

It would only take three for a plurality for Jeffries.

It's so close.

If things go downhill as predicted, this is probably going to be the most brutal, disgraceful display of Trump power grabbing in our memory.

The whole world is watching with fear and trepidation.

It sounds like some of you are already having fun with the second Trump presidency. It's almost like you wanted this...

You even know all this wishful thinking will likely be for nought and is a waste of time, just like when you hoped in vain that he'd be disqualified from running in office instead of putting that energy into actually trying to defeat him.

While we're busy speculating about the outcome of the election for Speaker, I have a feeling that Trump is way ahead of us with a more immediate plan to completely wrest control of the spending from the House and into his hands.

I'm sure Trump has already devised a way that can be done legally and without making it appear that the House has completely abdicated their budgetary responsibility.

#36 | Posted by Twinpac at 2024-12-31 05:25 AM

are they just looking for retribution?

#23 | POSTED BY LAMPLIGHTER

They are also looking for revenge. Lots and lots of revenge. Revenge for anyone trying to hold Trumpy accountable for his many crimes.

And suffering. There needs to be suffering.

They have to make those decisions ebil immigrants pay for what they have done to America.

Because we all know that all of America's problems are because of the immigrants. And as soon as we get rid of them the sun will come out and there will be rainbows and unicorns. (Ok no rainbows because the gays have appropriated them.) But there will be lots of unicorns. And a big Orange Rock Candy Mountain you walk right up to and lick at Merdo Lago!

You never change your socks
And the little streams of alcohol
Come a-trickling down the rocks
The brakemen have to tip their hats
And the railroad bulls are blind
There's a lake of stew and of whiskey, too
You can paddle all around 'em in a big canoe
In The Big Rock Candy Mountains

The GOP filed over 100 lawsuits claiming the election was tainted. They won and ignored all those suits. They wish to have it both ways; if they win it's all good if they lose they were robbed.
