Monster Storm Across U.S.

At least 32 people have been killed after a huge storm tore through several states spawning fires, dangerous high winds, dust storms, tornados and blizzard warnings.

... The most fatalities as of Saturday morning were in Missouri, authorities said, which was lashed by twisters overnight that resulted in at least 11 deaths. The Missouri State Highway Patrol also reported that multiple people were injured.

The deaths included a man who was killed after a tornado ripped apart his home.

"It was unrecognizable as a home. Just a debris field," said Coroner Jim Akers of Butler County, describing the scene that confronted rescuers when they arrived. "The floor was upside down. We were walking on walls."

Rescuers managed to save a woman in the home, Akers said.

Officials in Arkansas said on Saturday morning that three people died in Independence County and 29 others were injured across eight counties as storms passed through the state overnight.

"We have teams out surveying the damage from last night's tornadoes and have first responders on the ground to assist," Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on X.

She and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared states of emergency in their respective states. Kemp said he was making the declaration in anticipation of severe weather moving toward the state later Saturday.

On Friday, meanwhile, authorities said three people were killed in car crashes during a dust storm in Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle. ...

I know you're being flippant, but my wife and I were talking about this just today because one of these tornados passed within a few miles of where we live.

Even with the current foresight and warnings, it was a very damaging system. I don't even want to imagine the outcome of this being a surprise to most/many because free, quality info is no longer available.

I'm one of those curious idiots who stands in their porch/patio until the very last second they think it's safe. It was terrifying how quickly conditions turned with these storms, and that was with me knowing what was coming.

I don't think REIN was being flippant; I think he was commenting on the fact that an unelected billionaire who earns billions through contracts with the Federal Government is worming himself into many importanr agencies of the government and purposely disabling them or completely destroying them; NOAA being just one of them. His motive? It's not cost savings as he claimed earlier. It has become obvious to many that many or most of his slashing isn't saving any money. It ttruly is, as if, Trump and Musk are both working for Putin to purposely destroy the American government. They need to be stopped and it is past the stage that this is a political argument.

Maybe after Elmo gets done decimating NOAA maybe he will get around to rescuing those two stranded astronauts in space.

I'm not so sure. I can easily see NOAA and NASA being handed off to SpaceX. There would be a huge saving from "privatizing" those organizations.

The money saved could then be given to SpaceX to provide the same services. SpaceX could then fire most of the employees and use the cash to buy more crypto.

So why didn't he? The capsule they will be coming back on next week has been docked at the ISS since last September... they could have come back any time since then.

The actual reason is there was no pressing need for them to come back, and they had work to do. So they just waited for the normal ISS crew rotation, which is what is happening now.

Wonder how long we will have access to that data. And how long it will actually be reliable after unelected co-president Elmo gets his grubby fingers on it.

The NWS was created on February 9, 1870 by President Ulysses S Grant.

What I noticed immediately is that we went from 695 deaths to less than a hundred as we got better at predicting tornadoes and getting the warnings out (and of course better zoning regulations).

Your government of the people did that.

Maybe, but each year tornados kill 80 people. Meanwhile 12000 die falling down the stairs. So we would be better served eliminating stairs, but if we eliminate stairs how do we get into the tornado shelter?

False equivalence. Stairs are a more plentiful and consistent presence, whereas tornadoes are random and less common than stairs. In fact, stairs exist where tornadoes don't. Good try though... there might be a future for you in the Trumpanzee administration.

NOAA/NASA being given to SpaceX is definitely going to happen.

I meant more the "won't be a problem" part.

I have no doubt a rise in weather related deaths will go under reported.

Storms are still battering and drenching the North Coast.of California. The power went out for the first time in a year. It was back in about 2 hrs. Good job PG&E! The winds were fierce yesterday and I even heard thunder as the front passed. That's pretty rare here and it's still pouring down rain outside right now.

And these storms are all headed East riding on an atmospheric river.

Watch for the "FREE" lifesaving warnings from the NWS (while they still exist) and batten the hatches folks! It ain't over yet. If you are in the path then you got a whole lot more coming.
