Trump Funding Cuts Ripple Through Rural America

The phone rang over the whine of Trey Yates' butter churn. The person calling was polite, but the message was devastating: Mountaineer Food Bank was ending Yates' butter contract, due to the federal government's funding cuts.

"Food banks are handling unprecedented demand as U.S. hunger rates climb after years of decline. In 2023 13.5% of Americans struggled at some point to secure enough food, the highest rate in nearly a decade...In rural America, the hunger rate is even higher at 15.4%." www.reuters.com/world/us/tru...[image or embed]

More from the article...

... The next day, President Donald Trump signed a declaration celebrating National Agriculture Day, praising farmers and food makers like Yates. But the canceled contract with the federally funded food bank, one of only two in West Virginia, had been a lifeline for Yates' business.

In that moment, Yates, 27, wasn't sure how much longer he could hold on. Heart pounding, he called his father, John Yates, shocked that Trump's administration would take such action.

"Dad, they're trying to bankrupt me," he said. Yates, a registered independent, said he did not vote for Trump.
Along the winding back roads and Appalachian hollers of West Virginia, in a state where Trump won 70% of the votes cast in November, his administration's vow to cut back on government spending is being keenly felt. ...

C'est la vie.

West Virginians were born to live in poverty and hunger, and their overwhelming support of Trump says that they agree.

These food banks save the day during Trump's last disease fiasco, not just in West Virginia but in richer states such as Texas.

Everyone saw the long lines of Americans waiting to get food bank commodities. Trump had knocked them out of the middle class.

As insanely incompetent as Trump and his people are, we could very well see that again.

Only this time, Trump wants people to starve.

Revenge, or something.

Mumble, mumble, mumble, Golden Age.

This is where Boaz says Charity should rightfully replace those wrong-headed Government Programs Americans have come to rely on for generations.

I wonder what Republicans will say when Charity doesn't come close to making up the shortfalls?

If God didn't want people to starve, he wouldn't have put Trump in the White House.

"Two More REPUBLICAN-APPOINTED Judges Rule AGAINST Trump's Executive Orders

Mar 29, 2025

Donald Trump seems to spend his days golfing and signing unconstitutional executive orders. Two more federal court judges just halted executive orders Trump signed to punish law firms who displeased him for one reasons or another.

And one of the Republican-appointed judges, Judge Richard Leon, had some choice words for the absurd arguments that were made in court by Trump's DOJ lawyers, saying:

"Have you ever practiced law? Have you had clients? Then use your common sense."

"This is where Boaz says Charity should rightfully replace those wrong-headed Government Programs"

The quickest way to admit you're using Republican Math.

Societal needs would dwarf charities' capabilities.

Good thing Biden was focused giving rural America them highspeed Internet and electric chargers.

What else does Boaz say in relation to this?? I mean if you're going to use his argument you should use his whole argument. I am not saying it will work, but to be sarcastic and think you're smart because you only use half a mans argument is pretty pathetic really.

You have difficulty reading don't you?

#12 | Posted by oneironaut at 2025-03-29 06:34 PM

"What else does Boaz say in relation to this?"

It's what he doesn't say.
He doesn't say that charities are allowed to discriminate who they serve, unlike the Federal Government.

And dems need to put the word out that firms that capitulate to Trump will lose their business; now and in the future.

Squeeze them. Some people need to be put in a bind to help them think clearly.

Good example of that here in rural maine. There was an uproar in the liberal Portland Press Herald because the Feds are holding back $4MM of the $19MM ear marked for electric charging stations here. The $19MM was budgeted to build 41 stations. That's a cost of $463k per station. They built 17 at a cost of $15MM or $882k each. The original $463k looks fraudulent since you can put one in your house for between $50k and $150k if the install is extreme but to then overrun the cost by over 400 each is mind scratching. But that is what is happening all over this country.

#20 They were Covid specified grants that were set to expire anyway, per your own link.

---------, the funding was scheduled to continue through 2026.

#23 | Posted by reinheitsgebot at 2025-03-31 11:35 AM

#23 "Separate federal funding through the Health Equity Immunization Grant was also rescinded for Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health, she said. That funding impacted the organization's ability to provide free COVID-19 tests and a portion of the salary for a vaccine specialist."

Different grant that was supposed to be through 2026.
The grant we are talking about was ending in Sept anyway.

Again, read again but try and comprehend this time.

#24 | Posted by fishpaw at 2025-03-31 01:18 PM

It's all related to the same decision," Moch said. She added that arguments about the pandemic being over and the funding not being needed don't hold water because they are still working through the impacts of COVID-19. That funding was supposed to continue until 2026, Moch said.

Try again, -------.

#25 Moch said it was all related, losing grants. Your link is talking about two different grants. She is talking about losing funding for both are related. The big one in question was Covid related and was to expire in Sept.
And btw, wtf on Covid grants, they were originated to help people DURING the pandemic. It was declared over, by WHO and Joe Biden in May of 2023, two years ago! Anyone who is still sucking off that teet needs to be shut down.
