Chiefs Are Moving to Kansas

The Kansas City Chiefs plan to abandon their longtime home in Jackson County and build a new multibillion-dollar complex in Kansas City, Kansas, with the help of a massive public subsidy.

Why is there a Kansas City in both Kansas and Missouri?

... The origin of modern-day Kansas City, Missouri, dates back to the 1830s, when John McCoy founded the settlement of Westport at what is now Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. McCoy chose this area to open an outfitting store for pioneers on the Santa Fe Trail. He then established a river boat landing on the bluffs at the bend in the Missouri River, just two miles north of his settlement. This Westport Landing was connected to the settlement of Westport by road and sparked development in the area.

A group of 14 investors, including McCoy, formed the Town Company in 1838 to buy up property along the riverfront. This area included Westport Landing and in 1850 was incorporated as the Town of Kansas. City founders derived the name from the Kansas, or Kaw, River which was named for the Kansa Indians.

The state of Missouri then incorporated the area as the City of Kansas in 1853 and renamed it Kansas City in 1889. John McCoy's settlement, the old town of Westport, was annexed by Kansas City, Missouri, on December 2, 1897.

During this time, other settlements were developing across the river on the Kansas side in Wyandotte County.

Some of these small towns incorporated as Kansas City, Kansas, in 1872.

By naming this town after the growing city on the Missouri side of the state line, city leaders in Kansas were able to capitalize on the success of Kansas City, Missouri.

It's also possible that the people in Wyandotte County felt that they had more right to the name "Kansas City" than the people of Missouri had. ...

I'm fine with there the chiefs are going but it's rumored the royals aren't going downtown. Rather in the middle of Overland Park.

Not a fan of that.

Everything I ever wanted to know about Kansas I found in Capote's In Cold Blood.

Aside from the crime narrative, it's a great depiction of late 50s/early 60s Republicans, and I'm saying that positively. I imagine it's the same strain of folks who Eberly hopes he's voting for when he's voting for the local Rs now. Elks and farmers and good upstanding Americans, truth, justice, and church and golf and apple pie, and not a hint of depravity.

There are 2 Kansas City's - Kanssas City, KS and Kansas City, MO. They are next to each other, separated by the Kansas and Missouri rivers. KCMO is much larger than KCKS and KCMO is where the stadiums are - for now. The airport is in KCMO. If someone said they were going to 'Kansas City', most people would be thinking of the Missouri side of the metro, even if they incorrectly thought it was in Kansas. As for the Chiefs - I live in KCMO and this is a mixed bag. On one hand, the Hunts are worth 25 BILLION and can afford to build their own stadium without any assistance, but wanted some kind of welfare/socialism so they didn't have to foot the entire cost. The state of KS came thru for them. The area around the stadiums is run down and KCMO/Jackson County has never done anything to improve it or make it an after game destination. Once the games are over, you have to drive somewhere else for any kind of 'after game' activities. Hard to blame the Chiefs, but sucks that MO can't keep a team they've had for 50+ years. MO's deal seemed slapped together and couldn't compete with what KS offered. Our MAGA Governor and MAGA legislature were far more worried about gerrymandering, fighting to ban abortion, and getting rid of the citizen initiative process in our constitution than they were about the Chiefs, and Kansas took advantage. Bottom line, though, this was the Chiefs (Hunts) decision. Money wins again - another billionaire gets someone else to pay for a place for his team to play in.

Won't be surprised if the Royals very soon announce a move to Kansas too. They are also negotiating for a new stadium.
Kaufman stadium is in the same complex as Arrowhead in Jackson County.

Left Missouri in the early 90's. Witnessed the I70 World series, Royals vs Cardinals was really cool. Sad to hear the stadiums and surrounding areas have not been kept up.
