Were people who practiced slavery "evil?"

If so, a significant percentage of humans have been "evil."

Saying slavery was evil is like saying cannibalism was evil, even thought it was practiced by many cultures for thousands of years.

They were all evil? Do you think they saw it that way?

If something is truly evil it is recognized as evil no matter what age you live in.

Btw- by teaching it was a "necessary evil" means they are teaching it was evil. Just a necessary evil.

Oddly, some not-slaves folks involved in slavery did get a bit squeamish about the business. An example that springs to the fore is Thomas Jefferson and his famous "wolf by the ear" letter (www.loc.gov). Regarding those enslaved, for conflicted Enlightenment thinker and owner of slaves Mr. "We Hold These Truths To Be Self-Evident" himself, it apparently boiled down to "we have the wolf by the ear, and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go."
