Oddly, some not-slaves folks involved in slavery did get a bit squeamish about the business. An example that springs to the fore is Thomas Jefferson and his famous "wolf by the ear" letter (www.loc.gov). Regarding those enslaved, for conflicted Enlightenment thinker and owner of slaves Mr. "We Hold These Truths To Be Self-Evident" himself, it apparently boiled down to "we have the wolf by the ear, and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go."
