Wendy's will soon begin testing Uber-like surge pricing

Well, I guess I'll never eat at Wendy's again.

They already charge $7 plus for a hamburger.

I can go to a good pub for a $7 hamburger.

My guess is that going forward with this "surge pricing" that the prices will always be the same or higher than they are now.

@#2 ... I can go to a good pub for a $7 hamburger. ...

And the pub's burger is likely to be good-tasting beef, instead of the beef-flavored cardboard that Wendy's seems to sell nowadays.

I mean no offense but where? Even here they are all $10 or more now. I just went to lunch today $11.99 + more if you wanted fries.

A good point.

Do the employees' wages increase during that "surge pricing" period?

Or are the wealthy shareholders the only ones who profit from the surge pricing?

I stopped at a new Wendy's drive through for a drink and was surprised to find I was their very first customer. Ever They made a big deal, the manager came out and had pictures taken. Then they asked for my order and went all the way, Fries and a Frosty, figuring it was going to be free, maybe even for the whole year! Then they said, that'll be $11.65. They gave me the frosty for free. I haven't been back, but I've been told my picture is framed with a dollar bill attached.

Did you legally consent to have your picture taken?

Did you legally consent to have your picture used for corporate promotional purposes?

Isn't this called price gouging?

@#11 ... Isn't this called price gouging? ...

Here in Connecticut...

Price Gouging and Profiteering
portal.ct.gov

... Price gouging or profiteering is illegal in the State of Connecticut. It occurs when the price of an item is substantially increased during certain types of declared emergencies. In some cases, the Governor has the option to impose price restrictions on certain products or services due to short supply.

Price fluctuations that occur during the normal course of business do not constitute price gouging. ...

So it appears that Wendy's legal team did their research, at least for Connecticut consumers.

#10 Nope. It wasn't my dollar bill either, I paid with a credit card. No big deal to me though. I have a lot of respect for fast food workers, particularly during COVID times as this was. It takes a certain amount of character to show up to flip burgers for minimum wage instead of staying home collecting unemployment.

Uber drivers don't, not really. They used to, surge prices were a multiplier for drivers.

Now there's a few dollars 'bonus' for drivers, Uber takes the rest. It's been that way for several years now.

I'm honestly surprised that I still see Uber drivers around town. They're all either losing money or barely breaking even unless people are tipping really well.

I hope it bankrupts them!

By another way of looking at it, surge pricing already exists.

When Sonic offers half price slushies between 3-5 in the afternoon...meaning the prices double at 5:01....that's surge pricing that's already planned.

Wendy's just wants to not advertise the actual price increases or decreases

#16 That's offering a discount to boost traffic when it's slow. It's non-surge discounting.

Unemployment was not an option.
Burger flippers are Essential Workers.
What the pandemic taught us is many if not most minimum wage workers are essential workers.
It demonstrates pay is not based on value to society.
