Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, March 05, 2024

The US/Mexico border is +/-2000 miles long. Much of it is practically unpassable by humans... There more than 16,000 agents working the US/Mexico border. That's at least 8 agents per mile of border. Although, I would assume most of them are concentrated at ports-of-entry and trouble spots. With such a concentration of agents, plus barriers, plus surveillance measures, I'm having difficulty understanding why this is such a difficult problem. Is this actually a security crisis, or is it mostly political BS? I'm sure this will change no minds. It's just some thoughts to ponder. And an interesting website.

Border agents are being used to process migrants. They aren't on the border.

Plus you're assuming they can all be there 24/7/365.

BTW: Biden administration has flown at least 320,000 migrants into the United States.

Granting a parole status with work authorization.

Good times ahead.

Well that's a lie. Many Border agents actually do patrol the border. If you had ever been to south Texas, you'd know that and see them.

Many Border agents actually do patrol the border.
- sycophant

Of course some do, but sometimes they get pulled.

PHOENIX (AP) " So many migrants are crossing from Mexico into the United States around remote Lukeville, Arizona, that U.S. officials say they will close the port of entry there so that the operations officials who watch over vehicle and pedestrian traffic going both ways can help Border Patrol agents arrest and process the new arrivals.
www.pbs.org

Then the migrants stream across the "closed border" because no one is manning the entry.

I think the most telling recent thing I've read about the "border crisis" was when the god's army convoy got there and the people that were a part of it were shocked to see that is was nothing like they had been told. And the locals were more worried about the Trump supporters than the migrants.

The "God's Army" convoy was supposed to be a mighty force of 700,000 or more people from every corner of America. It wound up being maybe a couple hundred vehicles parked at a rural ranch in Quemado, Texas " basically a Trump rally without a Trump, but with plenty of hucksters selling MAGA merch and grifting the easily grifted.

Some actually visited the border in nearby Eagle Pass, Texas, and were surprised to not witness the invasion they had been promised.

Convoy-goer Misty Gregory told MSNBC: "It's not what I expected, but then again I don't know what I expected. I can tell you it's not as bad as what I thought, so that's kind of eye-opening in itself."

Abbott and about a dozen other pro-razor-wire GOP governors were in Eagle Pass on Sunday, hollering and whatnot. Some residents said the recent invasion of Trump supporters from the convoy had been downright scary.

"We are constantly being told that we're being invaded, and that never felt true until today, when the convoy came to town in anticipation of the governors' event," Jessie F. Fuentes told WOAI NBC News Channel 4. "This is political theater by outsiders. The reality is that it has brought dangerous, violent groups into our beautiful, peaceful city. Eagle Pass is safer than most cities in America if you look at crime statistics. This is just a fact. We don't appreciate these staged events that dramatically misrepresent our reality on the border and that invite extremist groups that pose a real danger to people in our community."

Border agents are being used to process migrants.
#1 | POSTED BY ONEIRONAUT

Link?

From the site:

"The bulk of this money goes to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). With a budget of $17.5 billion in fiscal year 2023 and more than 63,000 personnel, CBP is the largest law enforcement agency in the country, and more than 85 percent of the agency's Border Patrol agents (i.e., 16,878 of 19,648) are concentrated on the southern border."

So I would assume that many of those 63,000 employees are being used to process migrants, while the other 16 - 20 thousand agents are still working the actual borders. Even with shifts and time off, I think there should be enough agents for coverage.

This is an exercise in thought. Not an exercise in pulling excuses out of your posterior.

We talk about there being no border patrol agents on patrol because they're all processing migrants, but in all seriousness, this email to agents in Eagle Pass last night shows not one agent is on patrol!

Without proof ONEIRONAUT claims that the 16000 agents ARE NOT working at the border.

And then ONEIRONAUT fails to acknowledge that these 320000 were migrants who followed the rules by applying for asylum through the CBP One app, before entering the US.

Trumpers only know how to do half truths and lies. For Trumpers, no reform will be good enough unless Trump wins in November.

Instead of this BS, why don't you call Mike Johnson and tell him to bring bipartisan immigration reform up for a vote?

They aren't applying asylum, its a parole program they have two years and work authorization.

The program was part of Biden's expansion of the CBP One app, which kicked off at the start of last year.

Migrants were able, under Biden's expansion, to apply for asylum using the app from their home countries.

Why? Because all hands are on deck "processing" migrants rather than stopping illegal entry, that's why.

The Senate bill you are trying to play gotcha with never ultimately even made it through the Senatd, unlike the House bill I just linked.

The most recent polling I've seen not only has this as an issue of high priority for 24 but it's an issue where Biden's polling is terrible. That is 100% on him and his horrible policies and enforcement.

BS. See #30.

The Bill was the most comprehensive immigration reform Bill in 40 years. Thanks to Republicans, such comprehensive and bipartisan legislation will probably never get passed again in my lifetime. For the Bill Republicans want, they will require a supermajority in the Senate. But with Trump they will simply get their wishes by dictate, instead of legislation. We will all eventually see if such authoritarianism was worth it.

Republicans simply don't want to give up their wedge issue. And yes, they may very well win on this issue. Biden's polling is terrible by manufactured crisis.

I believe closing the border and finishing the wall will be environmental, humanitarian and economic folly.

What sad times... Republicans are only interested in governing by dictate. Not by diplomacy.

#37 | Posted by Whatsleft at 2024-03-05 05:21 PM | Reply

#37. The bill codified illegal immigration at unsustainable numbers. Further, "comprehensive" bills usually suck far worse than narrowly targeted bills. FFS - part of the "comprehensiveness " of it was $60 billion for Ukraine.

Anecdotal: I lived on the border for many years and have visited often since and most of the BP types I've run into seem bent on letting folks know they're chip-on-the-shoulder, barely literate goons who have serious attitude problems with Hispanics and pretty much everyone else around them. Not all. But a helluva lot of them.

#42 | Posted by Doc_Sarvis at 2024-03-06 05:43 AM | Reply

Those border agents aren't just at the border. I see them about once every week or two, set up and waiting for the coyotes. Coyotes are the name given those smuggling in the illegals. I'm an hour or so travel time from the border. It is not uncommon for there to be high speed chases through our area, including through downtown, as well as back roads, and the interstates. Last week, they were working the interstate, where one was stopped and all the illegals bailed once the SUV came to a stop. A month or so ago, tire strips were put out within a block of downtown, to stop a running coyote.

Those border patrols are covering a lot more area than just at the border, by a large factor.
