Chalk up another win for the Biden administration. Airlines will now have to provide automatic refunds to travelers if flights are canceled or significantly altered under new US Department of Transportation rules, a significant change for consumers that could drive up costs across the industry.

More: "Passengers deserve to get their money back when an airline owes them " without headaches or haggling," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement.

Under the new rule, passengers will be entitled to refunds if there is a "significant change" to their flights. These include:

Departure or arrival time that moves by more than three hours domestically or six hours for international flights
Being downgraded to a lower class than originally purchased, as from first class to economy
Change of departure or arrival airport
Increase in number of connections
Changes to connecting airports or planes flown if they are less accommodating for people with disabilities

Travelers will also get refunds for checked bag fees if the bag is lost and not delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight's gate arrival. International flights will have from 15 to 30 hours to return a lost bag, depending on their length.

Anyone who pays for a service, such as in-flight Wi-Fi or entertainment, and doesn't receive it will also get their money back.

In addition, DOT made changes to make it easier for the passengers to receive the money they're owed by requiring prompt automatic refunds in cash or through the original form of payment. Buttigieg said during a news conference at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Wednesday that the bulk of the new requirements will go into effect in about six months.

Airlines have long considered once they have your money it's a free loan if they don't provide the service, the refund which they will collect interest on as long as they keep it. You get dropped off at the wrong airport due to weather or other considerations, tough luck for you. Your luggage doesn't show up with you, hey sorry about that, we'll look around for it for a few months before considering paying you. Travel by flight is more a PNA than it's worth unless you just can't get out of it. Our forefathers got their destinations with slower planes faster than we can today with commercial flights with far less hassles.

I agree. I used to like flying but my last three or four trips have been nightmares. International flights are not too bad but expensive. Short haul flights suck.

Its about time. It should be double if the cancellation was not due to circumstances beyond their control. My son had a nightmare travel experience during Southwest's mess in 2022 holidays, multiple cancelled flights and missed connections, an overnight in an airport and several extra days away rom work. The worst part was that during that time I kept seeing Jet Blue direct flights leaving that would get him home if only he could be assured of a refund.

Yep, just give him 4 more years and he will have this airline mess all worked out.

Sure, let's just screw around with little stuff like this instead of doing the right thing and breaking them up and re-regulating them.

Undo the airline consolidation, smash the price gouging algorithms, force them to take out at least a couple rows of seats on every plane, bring back 2 free checked bags, and eliminate the TSA security theatre.

Flying is a huge pain in the ass these days. Good for Biden and Buttigieg for trying to eliminate one of the reasons.
