Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Steve Benen: Everything was on track (for the GOP) -- until the race changed. A Harris-vs-Trump contest offers contrasts that Democrats like. In a year in which many voters are concerned about crime, Republicans are running a man who's committed dozens of felonies against a former prosecutor who's brought criminals to justice. In a year in which some voters might care about experience, Republicans are running the least experienced presidential ticket in generations against a Democrat who's spent the last 20 years serving the public well.

This:

A Politico headline said the Republican Party was "pretty pissed" by the Democratic incumbent's surprise announcement, adding, "It's striking how much GOP anger there is over today's news. Donald Trump's campaign is built to beat Joe Biden."

Democrats, meanwhile, have made a similar transition - from despair about a looming defeat to cautious hopes about a race reborn.

To be sure, there's still some uncertainty about the process and the relevant details, and it'd be an overstatement to start describing Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive nominee.

But let's not play games. Delegates are on board with Harris. So are Democratic governors and members of Congress. And the Clintons. And Cabinet members. And labor unions. And donors - both large and small.

I spoke to someone overnight who works in Democratic politics who said a Harris-Trump contest would be "the future vs the past." No wonder Republicans are feeling anxious.

The Atlantic's Tim Alberta had a good report on this overnight, noting that Republicans, with striking speed, went from "cocky ... to fearful," in large part because they assumed President Joe Biden would never abandon his re-election candidacy.

Republicans I spoke with today, some of them still hungover from celebrating what felt to many like a victory-night celebration in Milwaukee, registered shock at the news of Biden's departure. Party officials had left town believing the race was all but over. Now they were confronting the reality of reimagining a campaign"one that had been optimized, in every way, to defeat Biden"against a new and unknown challenger.

Most striking thing I heard from Trump allies yesterday was the second-guessing of JD Vance"a selection, they acknowledged, that was borne of cockiness, meant to run up margins with the base in a blowout rather than persuade swing voters in a nail-biter.

GOP soon to be in disarray?:

@TheRickWilson
Well, well, well.

Can it be true that some of Mitch McConnell's consultants were telling their Senate clients last night, "You may need to distance yourself from Trump now?"

Oh, my. Mar-A-Lago isn't going to be happy.

Trump is going to lose to a black woman.

Say it again.

Trump is going to lose to a black woman.

He knows it deep in his Grinch like heart. He's gonna lose.

It will hang over him the entire failing campaign until he predictably flops at the ballot box.

People hate his guts and that hasn't budged since the bullet.

MAGAhumps will never get over it and sound like the bitter hubbie who got dumped by the now happy who has all their toys.

No to worry.

Trump has assigned Speaker Johnson the job of disrupting the Democratic National Convention with a slew of lawsuit over the switcher-roo.

POLITICO

House Speaker Mike Johnson reiterated Sunday that any attempt by Democrats to sub in a new candidate in place of President Joe Biden is likely to be met by legal challenges.

Speaking on ABC's "This Week," Johnson said, "Every state has its own system, and in some of these, it's not possible to simply just switch out a candidate."

Johnson's assertion, which echoed remarks he made during the Republican National Convention, suggests a strategy Republicans could be looking toward should Biden decides to withdraw from the presidential election. "I think in states where it can be contested, I expect that it will be, and they'll have an interesting battle on their hands," the Louisiana Republican said Thursday of a possible switch.

Technically, Biden has not yet been formally nominated to be the Democratic presidential candidate and won't be until a vote of the delegates selected to the Democratic National Convention. Still, Johnson said there might be grounds for a challenge, given that Biden was the overwhelming winner of the party's primaries.

"I think they would run into some legal impediments in at least a few of these jurisdictions," he told host Martha Raddatz. "We'll see how it plays out."

Trump might as well drop
Out, he's toast!

He's the only demented old man in the race.
MAGA't bothsiderism arguments now have been killed off.

A MONSON

That's the phrase I started hearing almost immediately. "Now there's only one old man in the race."

Actually, neither Biden nor Trump are "demented." Biden is just showing his age for a man who's been under the enormous pressure of the presidency and the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Trump is just nuckin' futs ~ combined with insatiable greed and the need for power to compensate for his insecurity.

His problem is, money and power does not cure impotency. Actually, money and power only make impotency more pronounced.

Trump is going to lose to a black woman.

Actually, that should be "Trump is going to lose to ANOTHER black woman." Let's not forget Letitia James.

They're going to fail, and fail badly.

The delegates have already been polled, it's a supermajority already planning on voting for Harris, with some state delegations being unanimous. And they're still planning on doing the real vote virtually, with the convention mostly being a fun party.

No stunt he's going to try will stop that.

His cringy "please clap" moment.

He is the first VP candidate to debut at -6 since 1980.

Since 2000 the favorability of the VP nominated at the convention has been +19.

JP better stay away from open windows.
