F"or all his personal grievances over the "woke mind virus," Musk is still the CEO of Tesla and an electric-vehicle pioneer.

On its face, a second Trump presidency would be bad for companies trying to move the country away from fossil fuels. But on a Tuesday call with Tesla's investors, Musk's reasons for his support became crystal clear.

.

Rather than worrying about society's move to an all-electric future, Musk is mainly concerned about maintaining Tesla's dominant position in the EV market.

The Inflation Reduction Act, one of President Joe Biden's defining legislative accomplishments, helped spur legacy carmakers to enter the EV game in earnest. As market competition heated up, Tesla started cutting prices, which turned into an industrywide price war that Tesla isn't winning.

Over the past year, Tesla's profits have fallen by 45%, and the company's market share has withered. Kelley Blue Book said that in the second quarter of this year, overall EV sales in the US increased, but Tesla's share of those sales fell below 50% for the first time in the company's history.

It's a steep fall, considering Tesla's share of the EV market used to be as high as 80%. Without a new model to sell (unless you count the Cybertruck for some reason) and facing even more cutthroat competition in China, Tesla is under pressure all over the world."

BYD will surpass TSLA for world-wide sales this year. TSLA Shareholders have seen their stock under-perform the SPX in the past five years, and they still get to pay Elmo Musk $48B for the long-ago stock growth. Meanwhile the Twitter bonds coming due in 2027 are selling at about 69, to yield 15-16%, or 1150+ comparable Treasuries. Elmo has some work to do, instead of wasting his time on political campaigns and AI videos. All the money he made for others Elmo could lose. Because he can...

Well, Tesla makes a bunch of fugly cars, especially that freak truck-ish thing. And then their autopiolot kills people both inside and outside the car. Easy to waive away when you basically have a monopoly on the market. So, Musk can only hope that Trump stomps on his competition.

Trump promises big tax cuts to billionaires. Harris promises tax increases for billionaires.
And when Musk says he was never giving $45 billion to Trump he was telling the truth because he can't give more than $3000. But because of Citizen's United, he CAN give $45 billion to a PAC and he can give it secretly so make no mistake about it, those payoffs to keep his taxes low is still going to happen.

While I agree - remember for a long time Tesla had zero real competition. Also remember that while sales are increasing very strongly for EVs in the US that isn't the impression many people have after watching the big 3 bailing on so many EV projects. Tesla does have some things very right and other like overall quality very wrong. Their cars are ugly and frankly uninspired both on the exterior and interior. Putting everything in the center is also ridiculous. Sorry but important information belongs directly in front of the driver.

KIA and Hyundai are the ones to watch in the EV market.
They are light years ahead of the American legacy auto makers,
and I believe ahead of even Tesla.

My eye is on either the Hyundai Inster or the Kia EV3
to come out in 2025 or 26. Those are some bad little vehicles.

Hyundai was founded in the 60s lol. It's a "legacy auto maker".

Of course "legacy" was just a stupid perjorative Elon used to bait people with his conspiracy theories disguised as engineering.

Whatever... Everyone knows legacy auto refers to the
GM, Ford, Chevy brands. Label as you wish, but Kia
and Hyundai have some of the brightest minds in the auto
world, in both design & engineering, and in marketing.

You have no idea what you are talking about. There's 35+ "legacy" manufacturers and Hyundai and Kia are both on the list, along with Toyota, Ferrari, Audi, etc, etc.

The only reason "legacy automaker" was even used as a term was Elon Musk suckering many people, like speaks, with conspiracy theories that technology was held back on purpose in collusion with the evil fossil fuel industry.

When speaking of American brands...lol.
I shouldn't have to point this out, but you must feel
like arguing.

Again. Whatever.
I've had enough of this pointless waste of time.

My point was, the S. Koreans. are kicking everyone's @rse in
the EV department.

South Korean brands have gotten better, but they're not #1. They have more problems per 100 vehicles than Chevrolet. They have more problems than Porsche, which if you know anything at all about Porsches, you would find very hard to believe, but it's true.

Hyundai has under 5% market share. Kia gets lumped in with "others" because the EV sales are slow low as a % of the total. Hyundai is being beaten by both Chevy and Ford.

All brands combined are still less than Tesla's market share.

No, SK brands are not kicking everyone's ass.

... to fix the mess he made at Tesla ...

Tesla recalls 1.8 million cars because their hoods can open while driving
arstechnica.com

... The electric car manufacturer Tesla had to issue a massive recall this month to fix faulty hood latches that can open while its cars are driving. The problem affects more than 1.8 million cars, which means it's slightly smaller than the recall in December that applied to more than 2 million Teslas.

The problem, according to the official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Part 573 safety recall report, affects model year 2021"2024 Model 3s (built between September 21, 2020, and June 2, 2024), model year 2021"2024 Model Ss (built between January 26, 2021, and July 15, 2024), model year 2021"2024 Model Xs (built between August 18, 2021, and July 15, 2024), and model year 2020"2024 Model Ys (built between January 9, 2020, and July 15, 2024).

The problem first became apparent to Tesla in March of this year after complaints about unintended hood opening from Chinese customers. By April, it had identified the problem as deformation of the hood latch switch, "which could prevent the customer from being notified about an open hood state."

As Tesla continued to investigate the problem, it found cases in North America and Europe, although it said these had a lower rate of occurrence than in China, "for reasons unknown." ...

Haha yeah, people used to go zipping out of parking lots, and their frunk lid would open, bend, and slam into their windshield and shatter it.

Real ---- your pants moment.

I have two things, first I drove a Tesla as my work takehome car for two years. I mostly loved it. It was a blast to drive, and their engineers had, with granularity, figured a lot things out to make the car better and more fun.

Having said that, as long as Elmo owns the company, I will never own a Tesla.

My wife, who I love like the air I breathe, was jealous of me when I got to drive my Tesla work car. She doesn't bathe in politics like I do. She asks me questions when she sees something political on social media that she wonders about, and I give her my elevator pitch length lesson about what's happening. So, she was shocked that Elmo was backing Dotard, and that he had locked a Democratic Twitter account. She assumed that since Elmo is a tech guy that he would be supporting the party with the younger candidate and the younger electorate. I told her that Elmo's a tech bro fascist who is more interested is a tax cut than preserving democracy. I explained his history in Apartheid South Africa, and that he's a lot like Dotard, a product of a rich daddy who has never built anything himself, but instead recognized places he could invest, like Tesla. Her response was, "Well F--- him, I don't want a Tesla anymore."
