Michael Scherer and Tyler Pager: As long as Joe Biden still believed, there could be no Plan B. But some key preparations were still put in place for the most spectacular transformation in recent American political history -- a flashbang midsummer swap at the top of the presidential ticket, an outpouring of volunteer energy, a rebound in the polls and a flood of campaign cash best described in fractions of $1 billion.

Biden bowed out of the race at 1:46 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday, July 21, sending Harris's advisers scrambling to the vice president's residence, where she wore a Howard University sweatshirt while placing more than 100 calls over the first ten hours. Aides rushed to the campaign office in Wilmington, Del., to flip an entire brand from a dead stop - before passing around late-night beer and whiskey to wind down.

By the time the state party chairs released a statement backing Harris at 9:12 p.m. that night, most of her potential rivals for the nomination had fallen in line. State delegations were endorsing. Hundreds of thousands of Americans would gather spontaneously by Zoom to pledge their support over the days that followed.

Brazile thought it would take 48 hours to finish the switch. The Associated Press declared a new presumptive nominee about 32 hours later.

This story about how Democrats handed Harris the nomination, saved themselves from oblivion and restarted the 2024 presidential contest is based on interviews with more than a dozen officials who made it happen, many of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private events. They told a wide-eyed tale of hope emerging from despair, unity stumbling out of division.

For those of you wanting to know just how this sausage was made, here is the story of how it happened in remarkable detail.
Numbers like this have never been seen.

In less than a week, the coordinated campaign raised more than $200 million, with 66 percent coming from new donors. An affiliated super PAC claimed $150 million of commitments in the first 24 hours. The campaign had more than 170,000 volunteers signed up.

And now, there's 100 days to go until Election Day with the now-Harris campaign machine up and running: Proud, stoked, buoyant with energy and joyously happy in ways that weren't possible under Joe Biden.

A major key to her success is that Biden always respected her... even when she was his rival. He was VP to an internationally popular president. He knew what the office held and knew she was exceptional when he chose her. He treated her that way.

Trumpanzee didn't do that... only he could do it... only he has the capacity... and the others capitulated. He wanted his last VP hanged for not bending to his will. Pence stood up to him so he was deemed unworthy.

He's all they have ... and it was done on purpose.

You mean the moneyed elite in the Democratic party helped to elevate her by forcing Joe Biden out. If it weren't for them Joe Biden would still be running

Just ---- off. Idiots like you gave us Fat Donnie Felon the first time.

How Kamala Harris took control of the Democratic party was she was elected vice president of the US, then elected as the Democratic nominee for vice president, and then the Democratic candidate for president stepped down.

These ------- so want to write "Dems in disarray" stories that, even when the obvious, pre-planned thing happen they still try to write that same article!

Joe knew the future was chaos in the convention. The media did enough of hatchet job on him while giving dementia don a pass that there was no way forward with him. He told Schumer to give him a week (during the RNC) where they wasted time, money and effort attacking him non-stop to line up all delegates, governors and democrats in Congress to get behind Kamala. His final act of being a unifier before stepping down.

He knew that we had to have unity going into the convention or else the election was over.

The energy of the registered democrats pushed her over the line raising $100 million in 24 hours and got everyone to see that this was the way to go.

A hearty --- YOU to Tyler Pager. For weeks we hear him saying that Kamala was the way forward and Joe should step down and when that happens he is now "Well not like this."

--- YOU TYLER you Frankie Munoz looking mother -----.

A major key to her success is that Biden always respected her..

Because Joe has honor and integrity. He is old school and believes in being polite and kind while all magats have is hate and ignorance. He belongs to the old school political parties where opponents would argue policy during the day and meet for dinner and drinks after hours. That is gone with the cult of personality surrounding an ignorant buffoon.

And?

Were they wrong to do so? Joe was being stubborn and didn't want to admit his age had severely damaged his communication skills.

I haven't seen the Dems this united since Obama.

@#9 ... I haven't seen the Dems this united since Obama. ...

I agree.

But this is just the beginning.

The task going forward for VP Harris is to turn the current enthusiasm and energy into voter turnout and votes for her team and down ticket Democrats.

Obama threaten Biden with 25A, according to reporting by Seymour Hersh and Harris was inserted in his place when he dropped out.

He should resign his presidency as he's clearly too infirm to do the job plus he'd give Harris the edge as running as the actual incumbent.

Seymour Hersh the Kremlin propagandist who makes excuses for war criminals in Syria? No thanks. Got anything better?

He should resign his presidency

That would be stupid. This way he can look after the store and Harris can concentrate on the campaign. Perfect situation.

Has there been a Harris rally 2X the size of one of joes?

I see it online, but I am not seeing on the ground.

Harris IMO will be a flash in the pan.
Theres too much evidence she doesn't like details and is a horrible manager of people.

We got a lousy candidate shoved down our throats by the elites. ImO it's Bidens retribution for all the behind the scenes talk of Pelosi, Schumer and Obama.

#15 | Posted by oneironaut at 2024-07-30 02:23 PM | Reply

I might add Hillary had larger rallies and bigger online support.

My projection is Biden will end up pardoning himself and his crooked son Hunter and family after the election. That has been the sneaky Dem game plan from the moment (or before) they tried to assassinate Trump and bring Kamala in without ever having to elect her as un-electable via a primary. The Dems and their media are a vile devious conniving lot who will bypass Democracy and everyone knows it. Much more so than conservatives

A bright man you're not.

Dis Trump promise to make you smarter if he was elected, or just to kill or imprison those sharper than you?

#18 | Posted by Zed at 2024-07-30 04:55 PM | Reply

ZED you keep trying my friend, but the proper descriptor of Robson is brilliant not merely bright.

The most appropriate descriptor of Democrats has always been devious and scheming. Numerous examples exist. They collude with the multitudes of the owned mega rich media Democrat media oligarchs to make the dumbest of the dumb like Kamala or Joe appear electable. They always keep them hidden away because they know they are not electable in public. Then they repeatedly apologize for their censorship failures.

Conservatives were always the under dogs and underrepresented sheep until Elon Musk decided to sacrifice some wealth to make big tech more politically balanced. Personally I prefer seeing the mega rich media paying more in taxes to keep them from paying more in political donations.
