Republican lawmakers say the Trump campaign was caught off guard by President Joe Biden's decision to drop his reelection bid and that the former president's team has faltered in responding to the surge of momentum behind Vice President Kamala Harris.

... Some Republican senators think former President Donald Trump should have seen the swap atop the Democrat ticket coming and crafted a messaging and political strategy weeks ago.

They see Trump's awkward discussion about Harris' racial heritage at the National Association of Black Journalists convention as a clear sign the Trump campaign hasn't yet hammered out a workable strategy for Harris.

GOP lawmakers also view Trump's selection of Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, as his running mate as evidence that Trump didn't expect Biden to drop out of the race. They worry Vance's outspoken views on restricting abortion and his claim that "childless cat ladies" run the country play right into the message that Harris and Democrats will center their campaign on in the fall.

One Republican senator who spoke to Trump before he announced Vance as his running mate said the former president expressed skepticism that Biden would drop out of the race.

"I think they were caught off guard. I think they were surprised," the senator said. "I think there was shock when the Democrats revived [their party] really quickly" and unified support behind Harris.

"I think she's more formidable than Republicans give her credit for. It's going to be a short election, that favors her. It's going to be sprint. We're used to these long elections. This one's going to end up being short. That helps her," the lawmaker said of Harris, who announced she had raised $310 million for her campaign in July.

The lawmaker said Trump's selection of Vance as his running mate to combat Biden's strength in Michigan and Pennsylvania, specifically, showed he expected Biden to be his opponent in the fall.

A second GOP senator in contact with Trump who requested anonymity to speak candidly about the campaign said the GOP nominee and his team weren't ready for the entire Democratic Party to rally behind Harris within a few days of Biden dropping his reelection bid.

"I think it was a surprise," said the lawmaker. "I wasn't surprised at all. I was already betting on a different nominee. What was impressive to me was how quickly they consolidated" behind Harris. ...

So... it turns out that Trump is a great motivator of Dem voters (or any lucid voter) and almost certainly more surpassingly, that Dems consolidated quickly.

They really deserve some kudos for that.

In 1973 after Bobby Riggs defeated women's tennis champion Margaret Court in a Battle of the Sexes match, he then played Billie Jean King who humiliated him at the packed Houston Astrodome. At the net, Bobby Riggs admitted to her that he vastly underestimated her and they became lifelong friends. The friendship part won't happen with Kamala and the Dotard after November.

Perhaps 10 years from now she will be visiting the once 45th President in Sing Sing, famous for it's first electric chair. He'll be like 92, a formerly orange Jabba the Hut, and still with 200 years on his sentence.

It'll be on her birthday, a well deserved present for taming the shrewd, maniacal now, Adolf Drumpf.

We never know what the future holds for everybody, Corky.

If my booklist wasn't so long, I'd buy Mein Drumpf. Thanks for that.

Good night, and good luck.

Bobby Riggs is a gambler that bet against himself and then threw the match. You -------- will believe anything as long as it fits your narrative.

The friendship part won't happen with Kamala and the Dotard after November.

Dotard has no friends.

He uses people and when they are no longer useful he tosses them aside.

Look at Rudy, his ex wives, Tiffany, Pence, etc.

FFS he tried to have Pence killed because he was of no use to him.

He is a user.

What a sad little life. Looking back on him, historians will see a pathetic little man followed by a gaggle of intellectually challenge hate monkeys.

This isn't the first time Trump has misjudged a woman's strength and resolve. Just the most recent after Stormy.

Anyway, Trump didn't do his due diligence. So he didn't "falter" when Biden turned the reins over to Harris. That's too generous. He was caught flat footed!

It's hard to pivot with his long history of bone spurs.

I think most people failed to realize how desperate Dems were to rid themselves of the corpse that was dragging down the entire party, to the point where they would go nuts for someone none of them really liked simply because she can speak and travel and hold events. That is how low the bar was.

The part i really don't get is that Trump's campaign is being managed by two veteran pros. It seems impossible to me that they didn't have a gameplan for what's happening right now, to the point where their campaign has been flailing wildly for two weeks straight. That part surprises me more than the Harris enthusiasm to be honest.

Biden was playing Chess Trumpanzee is playing Monopoly. Trumpanzee is a tad blind to other's thought processes and assumes everyone thinks like him if they're tough. He can't imagine anyone giving up that position. Hellllloooo he's been fighting to get it back ever since.

People seem to forget Biden came out of retirement to kick Trumpanzee fat @$$.

Biden is self-aware... knows there are other qualified people. Trumpanzee doesn't think like that and won't let any one of his merry band of eunuchs think like that either... He's probably making them recite affirmations... positive thinking kinda thing...

Trump wouldn't consider it because he thought Biden was like him (egotistical, narcissistic and sociopathic) when they could not be more different.

Frankly part of me thinks the Republicl0wn campaign was pushing for another Biden run more than we were... He's who Trumpanzee has the beef against...for coming out of retirement and kicking his @$$. Trumpanzee is a vindictive @$$... Biden kicked him the knees with the democratic process.

Read the transcripts of the debate... Biden answered questions...Trumpanzee did not... he lied and yelled Cl0wny ghost stories

As far as the bar being so low... 'scuse me? We were happy to have Harris... we liked Harris... Harris changed the landscape... Harris made history...you didn't like her... we knew what we were doing when we voted the ticket. We weren't all that lost.

You seem to have room for only one shining star... a fat old star...he's all you got... you let him do it to you...

... GOP Senators: Trump Caught Off Guard by Harris' Strength ...

It is becoming even more apparent now that VP Harris has selected Gov Walz as her running mate.

The GOP does not know how to react to excitement and happy enthusiasm.

RIGHT/TRITE

I can't imagine what JOE has against Kamala Harris to refer her to a "low bar" but she's certainly proving him wrong on that point.

We all knew that President Biden was past his prime and we worried that he wouldn't be able to withstand the rigors of a campaign. But to call him a "corpse" says more about JOE than it does about Biden. He, unlike JOE, has accomplishments. Maybe that JOE's problem. In fact, I've been wondering for a long time if JOE even passed his bar exam in Chicago.

If Trump were running on policy and not hate and fear and empty promises, it wouldn't matter who he ran against.

Trump's policy is Project 2025.

The Heritage Foundation released it too early and Trump has been losing ground ever since. It really is a nasty piece of work.

It was obvious in the Tchump v Biden debate to anyone listening to Trump that his talking points were BS on everything, and his grasp of facts horrible. That was overshadowed by how shocking Biden's lack of energy was and by his early bout of confusion.

Then came Trump's acceptance speech at the GOP Convention, that if kept to less than 15 minutes would have been frighteningly uncharacteristic in its moderateness. But Tchump blathered on in his typical self-absorbed stream of consciousness way for another 60 minutes completely invalidating every good thing about his initial 15 minutes.

Finally, look at Trump's recent incoherent ramblings on social media and in campaign rallies. There's no "there" there in any of them. It's the same thing all the time: a salad mix of rants and insults and self-congratulation and BS promises with no boundaries or concerns for facts and real data.

Perhaps smart GOP senators should convince Trump to step aside for the good of the Republican party?

I agree... I supported Joe Biden and thought if he did run and win Kamala would replace him... sooner than later... and I was good with that. I like that she will get it on her own two feet and it will give her more creds because it isn't by default.

But she could still be his prison pen pal.

So project 2025 might be big improvement over current Democrat lies and policies with sleepy Biden being in charge but doing nothing just like Kamala Harris.
