Dan Wetzel: There is one thing I got wrong - or at least vastly underestimated - about Caitlin Clark's impact on the WNBA. There is also one thing that I think almost everyone got wrong about the WNBA's reaction to Caitlin Clark and her impact on the league. The Clark fans came and didn't leave. They followed every game. Some of them, no doubt, began watching other teams as well.

The ratings growth for the WNBA this year was almost unfathomable.

ESPN reports that it averaged 1.2 million viewers for its games, up from 440,000 a year prior. By comparison, the NBA's average rating last season for games on ESPN and TNT was 1.56 million. Some 3.44 million watched the WNBA All-Star Game vs. 5.5 million for the NBA All-Star Game.

The Fever alone garnered five games with more than two million viewers and 18 with more than a million. This wasn't just Sunday afternoons on ABC, either.

A Friday night game on Aug. 30 against Chicago drew 1.6 million to Ion, easily the largest audience in the low-profile cable network's history. Two games on NBATV recorded 600,000 or more viewers.

It suggests that while Fever playoff ratings could set new records, there may be a sustained and extended boost for all postseason games that goes far beyond any reasonable expectation - mine in particular - of what Clark was going to deliver.

Clark slowly adjusted to the physicality of the WNBA while her teammates adjusted to her style of play. She enters the playoffs as arguably a top-five player in the league and is now regularly scoring 25 or 30 points a game, while hitting logo threes and tossing length-of-the-court passes. That's what drew so many to her in the first place.

I remember back in April when I posted a thread about CC being an iconic game changing fan favorite in the same way Tiger Woods was when he turned pro in 1996. And as the regular season is in the rearview mirror and the playoffs two days away, the records CC has set both on the court and in garnering fan interest all over the league and globe is unprecedented already and will only continue to grow if she stays healthy.

I said back then that the W negotiated too low in their media rights package, and I received pushback as I noted the NBA's package was 97% of the total amount while the W's was only 3%. The W sold cheap. CC first signature basketballs sold out in less than an hour and her licensed gear outsells every other player's by a wide margin. Once her Nike signature shoe comes out, I predict it will set an all time record for first-run sales. It's almost a no brainer.

If you haven't watched CC play, do yourself a favor and tune in. She plays the game unlike most players male or female. But most of all you'll be entertained, and isn't that the point we watch and enjoy sports in the first place?

A likeable WNBA player.

Well here's hoping that women start attending their games.

That prognostication aged like spoiled milk, didn't it? Thanks for reminding me, I'd forgotten what he said.

I also remember someone challenging me on my assertion that the W's rights should have been at least $2B annually instead of $200M. CC is pulling viewership numbers on obscure channels equal to or exceeding those the NBA draws on major networks and audiences are only going to get bigger, not smaller.

I also predicted that CC will become the first female sports billionaire within the next decade. Hell, with inflation like it's been, it could happen within 5 years if her shoes sell like I think they will globally.

I only hope people enjoy her transcendent skills and entertaining game as much as I have over this summer. Basketball is Indiana and Indiana is basketball. It's simply wonderful to have one of the best ever to play the game living and playing here instead of Chicago, New York, or LA.

It's not just women, it's every demographic - which is why she'll be more marketable than most athletes. Grandmas and Grandpas love CC, little boys and girls love CC, anyone anywhere can love the way she plays basketball even if they root against the Fever and for their own local favorite team.

And she just plays: With intensity, passion, and otherworldly talent - "on loan from God" as Rushbo used to say. I keep repeating it, but she truly is the W's Pied Piper and Golden Goose rolled into one.

Yeah.

From the start of the commenting on Ms Clark's rise I had mentioned that the WNBA did not appreciate what she was bringing to the table for the WNBA.

Even here on this most august site there was disagreement with my comments along those lines.

The odd thing is that I really don't follow, or even care about, professional sports. I just looked at it as the business it is.

You couldn't be more right, they've woefully underestimated the barrels of revenue she's helping to generate league-wide, as all the stars are getting publicity and hype like never before as they all play against CC.

The media deal they just signed was pathetic when balanced against the NBA's. Someone argued it's impossible to compare the leagues attractiveness to media outlets because so few watched the W - until now. And that was my point. Hell, the league could sell a package of nothing but CC games and make a fortune. The overseas rights would be ridiculous.

And Lamp, my son just sent me an article saying that your Connecticut Sun playoff team finished their practice recently with only 1 halfcourt available. Seems they have to share a local community center floor. WTF? Mohegan has owned the team for 25 years and they haven't even built the women a practice gym? The ownership deserves to lose their franchise. These are multi-million dollar players, not powder puff girls.

As I said, I don't follow sports so your comment was the first I heard of that. (I fast forward through the sports sections of the local 6PM TV news). But that article would not surprise me.

Just happened upon this:

It was announced earlier today that Clarks' 2024 Panini Instant WNBA Draft Blue Viper Rookie Auto 1/1 card was told at a Fanatics auction for a whopping $84,000.

Not only is it the most expensive card in WNBA history, but it's the most expensive card in the history of women's sports, according to TMZ.

The irony about the amount this card sold for is that it actually costs more than Clark's WNBA salary this season, which was a base wage of $76,535.

Clark beat her own record with this one, as the previous most expensive WNBA card was, per X user @ericwhiteback, "Her Bowman U Superfractor Auto 1/1 that sold for $78,000 this past January."

As I said previously, I do not follow the world of sports.

But this particular issue.... wow.

imo, it should be bumped up from sports coverage to business and financial coverage on the news, at a minimum.

Of course, there is always the secondary question lurking in the background...

Why are women professional sports treated so differently than men professional sports?

Is it, as (R) Gov Sarah Huckabee Sanders recently stated, that women should be humble?

And, fwiw, a query in my search engine of choice about ownership of WNBA teams turned up some interesting results...

I remember years ago reading in the old National Lampoon magazine that the women's football league would get a lot more spectators if every paying customer got to receive a ------- from the player of their choice. Might work for the WNBA?

WNBA games are super cheap to go to.

Tickets are often $10-$20. NBA starts at about $80.

Season tickets can be as low as $100. NBA starts around $1,800.

That's rapidly changing ...... due to the popularity of CC and the other rookies this season who're changing the game in the ticket revenue department as well.

Caitlin Clark Playoff Tickets Cost More Than Entire WNBA Finals

On Friday, TickPick (an online marketplace for buying and selling tickets to live events like concerts, sports, and theater) made an X post that wrote, "$131: Total cost to attend every game of the 2023 WNBA Finals

$133: Cheapest ticket available to see Fever at Sun in the First Rd of 2024 WNBA Playoffs".

In other words, fans are willing to pay more money to see Caitlin Clark's first playoff game than they were to watch all four WNBA Finals games between the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty in 2023.

Another example is that prior to this season, you could get a $5 ticket to Indiana Fever games regardless of opponent. This season the cheapest ticket was $50 and the Fever averaged over 17,000 fans per home game, far higher than the Eastern Conference finalist Indiana Pacers did last year. Of the Fever's 20 home games only 2 weren't complete sellouts and every single road game was sold out.

And there's this:

Fever's Caitlin Clark drives record WNBA betting action

Along with record television and attendance records, the WNBA's star-studded rookie class helped drive record sports betting action for the 2024 regular season. BetMGM reported a 108 percent increase in WNBA betting this season, with two times as many women engaging in betting on the league.

Indiana's star rookie Caitlin Clark was again at the forefront of the increased interest, with six of the top eight most-bet games at the book involving the Fever. Five times as many prop bets were placed on Clark than the next most-bet player - fellow rookie Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky.

People are choosing the W and CC with the eyes and wallets all over America and the world.

Tough night last night as Connecticut throttled the Fever by 24 in Game 1 of the best of 3. Fever need to win Wednesday night or their season will end in New England.

Unfortunately, Indiana teams have a long history of seeing their seasons ended by teams from New England be they Patriots, Celtics, UConn Huskies, and now possibly the Sun.

Barry Manilow can just suck it for all I care.
