Moldova Narrowly Votes 'yes' to EU Membership

Moldova's pro-Western president Maia Sandu said her camp "won fairly in an unfair fight" on Monday after a referendum found voters to be narrowly in favor of joining the European Union, despite allegations of Russian interference. With all votes counted by Monday evening, the "yes" vote for future EU membership emerged with a wafer-thin majority of 50.46%, according to Moldova's electoral commission.

Moldovan authorities have accused Russia and Russian-allied figures of trying to disrupt Sunday's vote with a variety of nefarious tactics. Earlier this month, police officers said 130,000 Moldovans had been bribed with a total of $15 million to vote against enshrining EU ambitions.

On Thursday, police said it uncovered a scheme involving people being regularly sent to Russia for training in how to take part in protests and civil unrest in Moldova, the Reuters news agency reported.

Moscow has denied all allegations of interference in Moldova's electoral process. "We categorically reject these accusations," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Monday in comments picked up by TASS, a Russian state news agency. "We do not interfere in other countries' internal affairs."

As far back as June, Chisinau's Western allies had sounded the alarm about interference risks in the election. In a joint statement, the US, Britain and Canada raised the "Kremlin's use of criminal groups to finance political activities and undermine Moldova's democratic institutions." ...

Yeah, it does look like Pres Putin is trying to extend his ~influence~ over the former SSR of Moldova.

Will his next step be to send in fighters to start internal unrest, and then proclaim that Moldova really wants to be a part of the former USSR he is trying to piece together? (similar to what he did in Ukraine?)

Well they do remember when Stalin turned most of that part of the world into a prison state to ensure that if another Hitler arose in Germany, Russia would be protected by a lot of prison buffer states.

It's not over.

There are thousands of Russian troops stationed in Moldavia and Moldavia wants them removed.

But now that they have decided to join the EU and not Russia then they are a threat to Russia. So stand back and stand by..

Putin can't have the EU on its border because democracies scare him.

who is meddling here? Did the U.S, state depatyment PAy yjr majority of Moldavians tO vote to become part of NATO? Or did intelligent citizens of Moldova decide that resisting a monster like russia requires unity with other nations with similar values? And, I am proud of the U.S. for being an important part of NATO, at least as long as we keep Putin's bitvh out ofthe QH. Why would any nation ever wish to give away their independence, national sovereignty, freedom and historic culture to an unelected group of foreigners called the European Union? Someone needs to explain that one to me and Im also a big believer in states rights freedom versus a mammoth uncontrollable bureaucracy.
