Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Trump is looking to reverse a 1960s-era policy/precedent that prevented people who pose a risk to themselves or the public, and are living on the streets, from being institutionalized. Here's the bombshell line: " ... seek, in appropriate cases, the reversal of Federal or State judicial precedents and the termination of consent decrees that impede the United States' policy of encouraging civil commitment of individuals with mental illness who pose risks to themselves or the public or are living on the streets and cannot care for themselves in appropriate facilities for appropriate periods of time."

President Trump wants to make it easier to forcibly hospitalize people experiencing homelessness for longer periods of time. The executive order says shifting those with mental illness and addiction into long-term institutions will restore public order.

So when are the righties going to take issue with the federal government forcing its way into local matters in such heavy handed, authoritarian ways?

I would have thought, based on y'all's past statements, that a POTUS unilaterally making changes at a local level by decree would have been a big no no...

More of the GOP's famed "small government."

Where's the money coming from to rehab these facilities and bring them back on line?

Out of the pockets of what used to be called the middle class back when we actually had a middle class.

California Spent $24 Billion on homelessness Since 2019, yet it still increased (181,000)

I suspect it all went to NGO's and their salaries, how about we start there.

I am not exactly sure about this idea, but complaining about where the money comes from is pretty funny.

You mean we aren't being milked now? Let me say that again $24Billion for homelessness since 2019 just in CA.

Across the country I imagine it's over $100Billion. for what maybe 500,000 homeless?

Selling off the National Parks should cover the cost.

I see. The Republican cure to homelessness is mass incarceration.

This will be done as well as Bushes war in Iraq.

The concept may be sound but it will be done so badly no one will care.

Gonna have to raise tariffs and do some more bailouts!
P.S. We'll pay for the bailouts with more tariffs.

WHAT?!

An area where EVERYONE wants to live has HIGH housing prices causing homelessness for underpaid people?!

Who would have guessed?!

You genius, OneIronPedo, you figured it out!

So how do you make places to live much cheaper in California? Remember, no socialism now!

And no, they didn't spend $24 billion on homelessness. A huge chunk of that went to making sure people did not go homeless through housing assistance.

Pres Trump - Apr. 13, 2020 - ""When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total. And that's the way it's gotta be. It's total.""

www.theatlantic.com

...In a rally-briefing lasting more than two hours this past Monday afternoon, Donald Trump issued a royalist view of executive power not once but several times. (Which is of course his tendency, with any point he wants to make.) You can see one of the clearest instances in this C-SPAN video starting around time 46:40. Trump is asked what he would do if he decided to "open up" the economy, but state governors didn't agree. What would be his authority in that case?

"When you say my authority -- it's the president's authority. It's not me.

"When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total. And that's the way it's gotta be. It's total."

Several things were remarkable about this statement.
