Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered diplomats to return to using Times New Roman font instead of Calibri, reversing a change made under the Biden administration. Rubio's predecessor Antony Blinken had adopted Calibri in 2023, saying it was more accessible for people with visual disabilities. But Rubio said this was a "wasteful" diversity move and that Times New Roman was "more formal and professional". The new changes go into effect on 10 December, and apply to both external and internal documents.

Lucas de Groot, the Dutch designer who created the Calibri typeface, told BBC Newshour the change was both "sad and hilarious". "Calibri was designed to facilitate reading on modern computer screens - it was chosen to replace TNR - the typeface that Rubio wants to go back to now," Mr de Groot said.

Another view ...

... Calibri is considered more accessible for people with reading difficulties due to its simpler letter shapes and wider spacing between characters.

Accessibility advocates had praised the Biden administration's adoption of the font for making government documents easier to read for individuals with dyslexia and other reading challenges. ...

I'm really torn about this one. On one hand, it's probably going to be another horrible waste of taxpayer money. On the other hand, we should show respect to the Roman Empire.

No matter the font, it all will have sounded better in the original German.

Hmm...Serif fonts are tricky to decrease the character composition (the white space between letters) without the letter's serifs appearing to touch. Have Pica Pole & Purportion Wheel--Will Travel.

Was this petty, vindictive and pathetic as well?

No, it was an attempt to make documents easier to read.

Apparently, to you, that is "woke".

It's rather stunning, isn't it?

That font is easier to read is reason enough for the Trump Administration to make things more difficult.

Hah! And Dotard Trumpf needs all the help he can get to read things.

Yes. Rubio said it was a "wasteful" diversity move. Wasting what? Something that won't also be wasted switching it back?

There's a difference between
"making government documents easier to read"
and
"making government documents harder to read"

???

I needled your typical double standard. Blinken made an unnecessary change. As did Rubio. Both changes were dumb yet you take big time umbrage only with one.
