"Every parent can see it with their own eyes. Social media is making children unhappy," said Starmer, who has two teenage children. "I've heard first hand from families crying out for change and we will do right by them."
The move, expected to take effect early next year, makes the U.K. part of a growing global movement to tighten online safety for children. Australia, Canada, Brazil and Indonesia have introduced legislation or announced age-based restrictions or requirements for children's access to social media. France, Spain, Denmark, Thailand and South Korea are among others studying or developing similar approaches."

Who knew commercializing childhood could have adverse effects on children?

Does this meant that kids won't buy Trump phones?
I mean, what will Corporations do if they can't brainwash kids at an early age?

"Who knew commercializing childhood could have adverse effects on children?"
I was simply born into it 35 years ago, but I blame 1960s-1970s ads for sugary cereals. And Ozzy. I also blame Ozzy.

Great idea! For 20 years ago maybe.
Too late to close the barn door now. Them horses left ages ago.

Yeah, I'm not sure how one puts those cows back in the barn. (TX, sorry!)
Psychologically justified, practically nearly impossible to implement.

Don't worry.
Americans can't figure out how to do anything other countries do daily.

Healthcare? Nothing we can do.
Gun deaths? Nothing we can do.
Social media influencing children? Nothing we can do.
Building a better America? Nothing we can do.
Shoveling billions to the extremely wealthy? That we can do, all day.

@9 As usual, Clownshack pithily and perfectly encapsulates The Matrix that we are all trapped in.

I use to be full of pith and vinegar.
Now I'm just full of pith.

First I'd like to see it work. Let's see if the UK can make it work.
Social media bans are seeing highly mixed results, with massive early crackdowns quickly giving way to teenage workarounds. Data from the first true test case-Australia's under-16 ban implemented in late 2025-shows that while tech platforms initially scrubbed millions of accounts, a majority of affected teenagers have easily bypassed the restrictions.
They already know about it and the more you make something taboo the more teenagers will want it.
When people feel their freedom or choices are threatened by rules, censorship, or advice, they often desire the "forbidden fruit" even more.
So yeah. Good luck with that.

To snowclone Corky what will Corporations do if they can't brainwash adults at an any age?
There have been many books written on the route currently taken by the Western governments.

Poster is more of a runaway snowclown... he always runs away. Especially from Confucius.
Then he just melts into a smelly puddle.
