We actually have a lot of data about UFOs.

If they are spacecraft, for instance, they are a very dirty and destructive way to travel.

Even on this slim point, you can reason backward and have some insight into the civilization that created them.

If these spacecraft are armed, then the weapons they use are strangely primitive. No, not bows-and-arrows primitive. Just strangely unsuited. Like they were never designed for serious war at all.

What's doing the killing appears to be microwave radiation. It's hell on plant life and has seriously injured humans.

Although the craft seem ultra-fast and maneuverable, there are cases of ordinary gunfire visibly damaging them. There are also many, many case of the vehicles crashing (if you believe that, or any of this).

They don't appear to be good pilots, and we might infer that their machinery isn't as sophisticated as ours in some ways.

No, they can only travel MULTIPLE LIGHT YEARS to get here, while we can't get to Mars. Allegedly.

I'm pretty sure UFOs are just us in the far future, building saucer-shaped time machines to travel back in time to warn us now people.

Unfortunately, due to massive future deregulation of safety requirements, plus massive funding cuts to pilot training, navigation, math, and science in general, the future-us time-travelling "aliens" are not able to safely land or even fly their craft.

That's my theory, anyway.
