We've had a voter ID requirement since 2018.

Weird that you didn't mention our new Democrat US Senator or the 5 (more likely 6 but we'll have to wait for the recount in the 5th district next week) US House seats Republicans lost? Or that the Dems now have a majority in the State House and might even split the Senate after the counting is done.

I don't have a problem with voter ID as long as it is easy and free for everyone.

Problem is the red states put it in and make it hard to get and expensive with the goal of disenfranchise poor minorities.

Never heard a poor person say it's hard to get welfare. They seem to always have and I.D for that.

#3 Hey, BOAZ, care to explain why North Carolina went from a Congressional delegation of 10R & 4D, to now 10D & 4R ? ? ? ?

#3 Hey BOAZ, care to explain why the only state-wide elected Republican in Texas is Ted Cruz ... and he wasn't even on Tuesday's ballot in THAT state? ? ? ?

#3 You never heard that, BOAZ, because you're deaf.

"Never heard a poor person say it's hard to get welfare."

Then you have never talked to a person on welfare.

Boaz isn't completely deaf. He just goes around wearing ideological earplugs 24/7/365.

In North Carolina, we could add, Tar Heels rose dramatically to defeat a loathsome 16-year Republican war on constitutional democracy - a crusade aimed at crushing the poor and the marginalized and lionizing the wealthy and the white. Our Democrats, and their compatriots, delivered a new U.S. Senator, a massively altered and dominant congressional caucus, an inspiring NC Supreme Court justice, a politically balanced state senate and, astonishingly, a boldly Democratic state house. I can barely type the words.

It is easy, these days, to look past Roy Cooper - so marvelously he has performed. Almost as if we had a right to expect it. I have great affection for Cooper, in part because he is so different than I am. Cooper is calm, steady, trusted, strong, measured, unflappable, and perpetually committed to the people of North Carolina. Even more important, as governor he saved us, for eight years, from some of the most extreme cruelties and transgressions of Republican lawmakers. Now he has wrested a senate seat from a hack of the worst sort.

Anita Earls is the most highly regarded state supreme court justice in the United States. Beyond that, Earls is so profoundly committed to a lifelong service to the people of North Carolina that she has campaigned from Murphy to Manteo as if she were a 20-year old prairie populist. Never has there been such a chasm, on the merits, between a judge and her electoral opponent. Even in a Paul Newby era, she gives hope to the rule of law.

A new crew of congresspersons stretches our imagination, and our prospects. Gov. Josh Stein is newly empowered. Robert Reives will become the speaker. Sydney Batch can't be far behind. The literally indefatigable Anderson Clayton has made it exciting to be a Tar Heel Democrat. Black North Carolinians have again taught our Republican adversaries that race discrimination can bite you. Latinos, apparently, haven't warmed to having their loved ones beaten and murdered on the streets. A gale force wind has swept across our politics. And, as we've always hoped, it blows from the South.

"Say glory": North Carolina has so much to celebrate about this election

The voting franchise in the USA is a RIGHT guaranteed by our Constitution.

And, yet, Americans understand that you must prove you're eligible to exercise that right by registering to vote.

And, as it turns out, in order to register to vote, US citizens must provide IDENTIFICATION proving that they're eligible to vote.

So, why don't the -----------, like BOAZ, apply that EXACT SAME REASONING to requiring IDENTIFICATION proving that they're eligible to own a gun ? ? ? ?

Because progressives like you fled your utopia's to move some where nice, and than begin to destroy it.

Unnecessary apostrophe, utopias would have been correct.

Somewhere is one word.

Then, not than.

Your vision of America has been utterly and thoroughly repudiated.

Deal with it, BOZO

#11... I _DO_ have to provide identification proving I'm allowed to have a gun. Identification that wasn't easy to obtain, and wasn't free.

So reverse your stance with that back onto voting.

The right to vote is a State granted right.

The US Constitution doesn't grant a right to vote.

The US Constitution lists what the States cannot use to abridge a State established right to vote.

The Compelling Government Interest is not a legislative creation but a judicial branch creation i.e. legislating from the bench.

SCOTUS makes up tests and markers because the Legislature didn't make the law perfect. So the bench makes up the law instead of being blind and basing judgment on the law and Constitution.

The Legislative Branch should break SCOTUS over its creative law making.

"The right to vote is a State granted right."

A right severely constrained in its denial by several Amendments, and Acts of Congress.

When I saw this thread, I wondered how it may be related to another comment I have posted ...

To wit ...

U.S. Appeals Court Strikes Down North Carolina's Voter ID Law (2016)
www.npr.org

...The appeals court noted that the North Carolina Legislature "requested data on the use, by race, of a number of voting practices" -- then, data in hand, "enacted legislation that restricted voting and registration in five different ways, all of which disproportionately affected African Americans."

The changes to the voting process "target African Americans with almost surgical precision," the circuit court wrote, and "impose cures for problems that did not exist."

The appeals court suggested that the motivation was fundamentally political -- a Republican legislature attempting to secure its power by blocking votes from a population likely to vote for Democrats....

@#21

How is this current Voter ID law different from prior attempts?
