Typhus, a flea-borne bacterial disease, is on the rise in Los Angeles County, with the latest localized case reported in the Wilshire Center neighborhood, public health officials said Tuesday. The disease is spread to humans by infected fleas that commonly live on rats, opossums, stray cats and other animals. Common symptoms include headaches, chills, muscle aches and rash. The Wilshire Center case is the second localized typhus outbreak this year, according to the LA County Department of Public Health. read more
A Toronto man has been acquitted of a choking attack on a young girl after a judge ruled that he had been under the influence of marijuana and said that the attack was due to a "psychotic episode." During the attack, he invoked Allah, according to court documents. Ahmed Baig pleaded not guilty to assault causing bodily harm and assault by choking after an August 2023 attack in which he left his home wearing only a towel after vaping cannabis. The towel fell off and he started chasing a family that he encountered in the driveway. "He ran into the driveway and picked up a seven-year-old girl. He threw her to the ground, punched her and strangled her. He then abruptly left the driveway, and a short time later was arrested by police. At the time of arrest, he wore only a T-shirt," Justice Mara Greene wrote, recounting the incident. read more
Data shows small businesses lost hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue during Operation Metro Surge. A Hennepin County program launched to help them ended up shutting down. Nearly half of the applications for taxpayer-funded recovery money were fake. "We caught the fraud before we spent any money," Hennepin County Commissioner Jeffrey Lunde said. Lunde says it was an unfortunate win. A federal appellate court has upheld a decision allowing Hamtramck to ban Pride flags on city-owned property. The ruling, issued Aug. 21 by the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, affirmed the Sept. 2025 dismissal by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan of a challenge to Hamtramck's 2023 ban on flying Pride and other group flags on city-owned flagpoles. The court held that even assuming the poles had previously been a forum for private speech, the city is permitted to change the purpose of that forum and restrict the poles to specified flags, making the display government speech. read more
