It stands to reason that anyone who celebrated Hunter Biden's conviction yesterday must be just as angry about Mr Trump's unlawful possession of a firearm. /s

Does anyone here know enough about firearm laws in New York and Florida to tell us if Trump has committed a crime?

@#9 ... Does anyone here know enough about firearm laws in New York and Florida to tell us if Trump has committed a crime? ...

Donald Trump May Have Violated the Terms of His Release
www.newsweek.com

... It is a federal crime for a convicted felon to own a gun or ammunition. ...

So, the laws of NY or FL may not be the operative ones here.

18 U.S. Code 922 - Unlawful acts
www.law.cornell.edu

...
(g) It shall be unlawful for any person"
(1) who has been convicted in any court of, a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year;
(2) who is a fugitive from justice;
(3) who is an unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance (as defined in section 102 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 802));
(4) who has been adjudicated as a mental defective or who has been committed to a mental institution;
(5) who, being an alien"
(A) is illegally or unlawfully in the United States; or ...

to ship or transport in interstate or foreign commerce, or possess in or affecting commerce, any firearm or ammunition; or to receive any firearm or ammunition which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce. ...

A couple comments:

1) it seems to be a Federal law, not a state (NY or FL) law.

2) the Federal law seems to now place fmr Pres Trump in the same category as illegal immigrants (%A, above).

I am not a lawyer, and all that....

The Federal law does not apply to a gun sitting in his Florida house.

The Florida law appplies, but there are loopholes, and the state has burden of proof.

1. Ownership in Florida is nebulous, because registration is not required. He can transfer ownership just by saying so.

2. Regardless of ownership, Possession would be an issue for him, but only if the state can prove it is still in his home and he has access to it. A judge won't issue a search warrant just to check.

The easy way out is to say he gave it to Melania and she put it in a locked box and he doesn't know the combination.

@#11 trump told an authority in NY that he owned a gun that was located in Florida.

#13 Yes, and that was apparently the purpose of the meeting, to establish conditions of his release and inform him of the restrictions placed on him as a result of his conviction pending sentencing. Likely that is why they asked him the question, so the real question is what instructions was he given, and will he follow them? A newly minted felon is generally given an opportunity to address situations like that. If not, a person would become instantly guilty of a number of other crimes related to their felony status before the ink dries on th conviction.

Will he follow them? Have you met the guy?!?

Are we sure that he's not guilty of the same thing that Hunter Biden has been convicted of?

I was incorrect, and spoke out of turn based on something I read on another site. This was not a meeting to establish conditions of his release, it was for purposes of a pre-sentencing investigation, which is different. I couldn't find any particulars because the meeting was confidential, and the info about a gun was a "leak", so we don't know what actually transpired.

I could not find info about the conditions of his release pending sentencing. Generally those instructions/restrictions are given by the judge in open court after the verdict is read. Often they are just a continuation of their pre-trial bond conditions.

There is some variation (depending on state) about whether a person is technically classified as a "convicted felon" prior to the sentencing hearing, which is where a lot of these details get hammered out. In some states, the jury's verdict isn't a conviction, the judge has discretion to review and even overturn the jury verdict, and the judge enters an order of conviction when he passes sentence. I'm not sure if New York does that. I couldn't find an order of conviction for Trump.

At any rate, Florida law will control enforcement concerning this gun at Mar-a-Lago. At issue will be whether he was actually in possession of it after his conviction, and whether there was associated criminal intent. I've never seen a prosecution for mere ownership, absent other crimes.

" At issue will be whether he was actually in possession of it after his conviction, and whether there was associated criminal intent."

IOW, he'll be treated more leniently than Hunter Biden was.

Let's talk about a two-tiered justice system!

#15 Actually I have met the guy, an experience I would not care to repeat.

#16 I don't think there are any allegations to that effect, but you never know. And for the record, I have never seen a prosecution for what Hunter Biden was charged with either. That was a complete waste of taxpayer dollars, but they rolled double sixes for the Biden campaign. Force Hunter into rehab or house arrest till after the election, and prove to America that the justice system isn't really corrupt.

" and prove to America that the justice system isn't really corrupt."

You mean prove to morons.

There's not a single charge against Trump which you or I could do without fear of legal repercussions.

In fact, if you or I had stolen top-secret documents, refused to give them back, lied about them, enlisted lawyers to lie about them, and enlisted others to help hide them ... We'd be rotting in jail until the government deigned to give us a court date.

Instead, the perp walks free.

Talk about a two-tiered justice system!
