Preservation Hall Jazz Band - Tiger Rag (1977)

So much energy and happiness in that rendition of the tune ...

@#3 ... That being said, stockpiles cannot keep dropping forever. The US is basically selling the SPR to Europe. ...

Agreed.

Even as Pres Trump seems to be doing his usual ~performative~ actions ...

For example ...

Trump administration in 'active dialogue' on strategic petroleum reserve in California
www.politico.com

The current strategic petroleum reserve is nowhere near full. And Pres Trump has been draining it.

So, is this new California thing more for immediate political gain for Pres Trump, or a longer strategic gain for the US?

OK, apologies for asking a question about Pres Trump and strategy. I should have known better tahn to ask such a question....

... Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a face-to-face meeting between himself and Vladimir Putin in a renewed bid to end the war.
In an open letter to the Russian president, the Ukrainian leader said it would be "wrong to simply wait" until the war in Europe becomes the focus of the US's attention once more, adding peace could only come "through direct engagement between" Ukraine and Russia.

Shrewd move, he is both preempting and "freezing out" more attempts by Putin to put pressure on Ukraine by "negotiating" through third parties and more specifically, his "messenger pigeons" Trump-Witkoff-Kushner et al.

He also knows Putin wouldn't accept it, but he is sending a much stronger message to both Putin and flaky European allies that "times, they are a-changing" and that Russia is in much weaker position to dictate terms of combat and what's acceptable for "peace deal" and ceasefire(s).

From the letter:

"When you led Russia more than 26 years ago, many in Ukraine had a positive attitude towards you. ... That is already in the past.

Now the absolute majority of Ukrainians perceive positively the fact that our long-range drones visited the opening of your forum in St. Petersburg, having overcome a distance of more than 1,000 kilometers. As you well know, this distance is not the limit of our capabilities.

... Almost half of your 26 years of power in Russia you have spent in the war against Ukraine.

Whatever you say about NATO, geopolitics and the Russian language, this war is your personal choice - a war without a real reason. This is how history will remember it.

We often hear that war suits you. Of course, not when it comes to the safety of your residence in Valdai or the parade in Moscow. Your own life is valuable to you.

But now we all see that this finally ceases to suit the Russians...

They do not like our drones and missiles.

They do not like the shortage of gasoline and the constant rise in prices...

They do not like your intention to organize a second wave of mobilization to expand the war...

They do not like the fact that there is no end in sight to your war.

Yes, you can still force the Russians to exist like this.

But your resources are significantly reduced.

You will not have enough money and political power to continue buying the loyalty of the Russians, as you have done for 26 years. We will do everything to ensure that the world takes care of this.

It is not that we in Ukraine are worried about the Russians. ... But I care about the Ukrainians.

... You are the first Russian ruler who was forced to turn to Pyongyang for help.

And today you are completely dependent on China - also for the first time in Russian history.

We have seen intelligence documents that you are now considering war plans for 2027 and 2028. We also know that you hope that ballistics will do for you what everything else has not.

Everyone has heard your representatives, smiling, saying that I can come to Moscow. But after such 26 years, there is nothing for the Ukrainian leader in your capital, as well as the Russian leader in Kyiv, to do.

There are countries that traditionally receive leaders to resolve issues of war and peace. Switzerland, Turkey... - many can and want to host this meeting.

... If you personally do not agree that it is time to end this war, Ukraine will continue to fight for its existence...

But you will also have to fight much more for your existence - not Russia's, but your own. ... These are facts of Russian history that you know well: when Russia gets tired, changes happen."

We can work on such fatigue. ...

Glory to Ukraine!"

Also, after the ship hits, the hits on the St Petersburg oil facility are dramatic... and telling; Moscow has tons of air defense systems, cities like St Petersburg have a guy with an AK trying to hit drones flying 80 mph from 500 yards away.

Not really - Moscow and St Petersburg are Russia's only two federal cities, too most significant "historic and cultural centers" and are most defended and best supplied with food and necessities compared to anywhere else in the country, which keeps them mostly isolated economically from consequences of war. St Petersburg (Petrograd, Leningrad) is also an important industrial hub, and has at various times been a capital of Russia; it's also birthplace of Soviet Revolution and hometown of one Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.

To give you an idea of how significant and important, in one of the demands in December 2025 28-point "Trump's peace deal plan" that was crafted by Putin to pass to Witkoff-Kushner clown show to hand out to Zelensky, they were specifically singled out:
"10. The U.S. guarantee: ... If Ukraine launches a missile at Moscow or St. Petersburg ... the security guarantee will be deemed invalid.

Besides real damage these strikes caused, it was also meant to send several messages to Putin and his guests at scaled down International Economic Forum:
a) increasingly longer range and stealth capabilities and increasing mass production capability of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces
b) Ukraine no longer considers Moscow and St Pete "untouchable" or sacrosanct** as Putin has increasingly targeted civilian structures in Kyiv
c) expect reciprocity as Russia often conducts missile strikes on residential buildings in Kryvyi Rih, Zelensky's hometown

** May 9, 2026 - Zelensky: Ukraine will hold back "long-range sanctions," strikes on Russian military targets if Moscow continues to avoid launching mass attacks: "Going forward, we will respond in kind."

The latest: June 6, 2026 - "Ukraine just carried out several large-scale overnight drone strikes across multiple targets near St Petersburg, reaching 1000km into Russian territory, ahead of Putin's economic forum finale."

@#75 ... Thanks to the voters of NYC.

The DNC ran Cuomo to sink Mamdani. ...

Yeah.

NYC, NY is the largest community of Jews outside of Israel. By a long shot.

Jewish population by city
en.wikipedia.org

...
Tel Aviv 3,891,000
New York City 2,109,300
Jerusalem 992,800
Haifa 710,600
...

So the DNC tried to appeal to that community, and failed.

Mayor Mamdani, in talking with voters, instead of talking at voters, gained an advantage.

Why Data Centers Are Loud, and How to Quiet Them Down (2023)
www.datacenterknowledge.com

... Data centers are frequently accused of contributing to environmental pollution because they rely in many cases on "dirty" energy sources.

But it's not just the use of fossil fuels that can make data centers polluters. Data centers can cause noise pollution, too.

If you want to minimize data center pollution in all respects, then, you should invest in data center noise mitigation strategies that will make your data center a better neighbor to anyone within earshot. This article explains how to go about reducing data center noise, as well as why it's important.

What makes data centers loud?

The reason why data centers have a tendency to be loud is simple: The equipment inside them makes a lot of noise when it operates. ...

OK, this is a noteworthy tune.

Why?

Well, it was released in 1985, just after Sony/Philips released their new CD format for albums with a significant dynamic range.

en.wikipedia.org

... Flim & the BB's was a contemporary jazz band that was among the first bands to record albums digitally. ...

The online videos do not seem to capture the dynamic range of the original CD I have.

But, for your edification ...

#66 ---, Clown, you cannot even make a definitive case against any Democrat who you consider to be impure.

And you've never said what you would do to primary said impure Democrats.

If you are incapable of successfully primarying one of your so-called "impure" Democrats, then what are you going to do, Clown?

Work to elect their Republican opponent in November, 2026?

Is that your plan, Clown?

Airports and airlines want travelers to ditch their plastic water bottles (2019)
www.cnbc.com

... Business and leisure travelers concerned about climate change and "flight shame" may do their part by purchasing carbon offsets and adjusting the number of trips they take on airplanes.

Airports and airlines are trying to save the planet, too, with a wide range of sustainable initiatives that include cutting down on single-use plastics and making reusable water bottles essential travel amenities.

In 2019, San Francisco International Airport launched an ambitious Zero Waste Concessions Program designed to significantly reduce the amount of single-use disposable plastic used at the airport.

Noting that in 2018 nearly 4 million slow-to-biodegrade plastic water bottles were sold at the airport, in August 2019 it became the first airport in the nation to ban the sale of single-use plastic water bottles.

The San Francisco airport now actively encourages each passenger to bring their own reusable water bottle with them to the airport and get free water from one of the hydration stations in the terminals. ...

An update (sort of ...) ...

Astronauts briefly moved to 'safe haven' over ISS leak
www.newsnationnow.com

... Five of the seven crew members on the International Space Station were briefly moved to a "safe haven" due to an air leak Friday morning.

NASA directed astronauts to wait inside a docked SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft while Russian cosmonauts work to repair some cracks in a transfer tunnel on the Russian side of the ISS.

The astronauts were allowed to leave the capsule shortly after, as the cosmonauts paused repair work while more data is being assessed.

The aging space station is set to be retired in 2030 and has required more maintenance as time wears on, with crew members performing repair work as part of their missions.

There has been an issue with the cracks in the transfer tunnel causing leaks since 2019, and it is considered a top safety risk.

The Zvezda service model is one of the oldest on the ISS, launched in 1998. The transfer tunnel connects the Zvezda module with a docking port for supplies and Soyuz crew members.

Russian cosmonauts have made attempts to repair the small cracks but have only slowed the leaks, which lose about a couple of pounds of air each day. To manage the leaks, the hatch to the tunnel is kept closed except when a spacecraft docks.

Roscosmos has said the hatch to the service module can be closed if the leak becomes too severe. However, a 2024 report noted NASA and Roscosmos have not come to an agreement on the point at which the leak becomes an untenable threat, and there could be additional complications from closing Zvezda.

Those include the loss of a docking port, which could impact cargo delivery, and the need for additional propellant to maintain the station's position. ...
