Israel Assassinates Gaza Journalists

Al Jazeera correspondent Ismail al-Ghoul and his cameraman Rami al-Rifi were reporting west of Gaza City when they were bombed in their car.

More: The strike killed both journalists, who were wearing the blue press vest that over the last 10 months has become a kind of symbol for press solidarity and Palestinian freedom around the world. The attack also killed a child who happened to be riding his bicycle in the area when the missile hit.

Extremely graphic photos and video of the scene of the strike show what appears to be al-Ghoul sitting in the driver's seat of his now-destroyed white car, which was marked as a press vehicle. He is decapitated, with no sign of his head in photos of him behind the wheel.

Al-Ghoul grabbed the world's attention earlier this year when he reported on his own arrest by Israeli soldiers who were raiding Gaza's largest medical facility, al-Shifa Hospital. The two-week siege trapped tens of thousands of people at the hospital, effectively turning the complex into a graveyard.

Al-Ghoul and dozens of other journalists were documenting the raid in March when soldiers destroyed their broadcast equipment, tents and vehicles before detaining them. Journalists were stripped, handcuffed, blindfolded and beaten for hours, al-Ghoul reported, and Israeli troops would open fire if they sensed any movement from the detained press. He said he was finally able to leave the compound by helping escort an elderly man who had been released.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 111 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since the current wave of fighting began Oct. 7, all but five of whom are Palestinian. The Gaza media office has put the figure at closer to 165 Palestinian journalists. Israel's military offensive has become the deadliest conflict for journalists that CPJ has documented in 30 years.

Specifically, Israeli forces have killed multiple Al Jazeera journalists since Oct. 7, according to the media outlet. Israeli officials have long voiced their opposition to the Qatar-based network, bombing its Gaza office and banning its journalists from reporting in Israel.

When you're intentionally committing war crimes, you'll do whatever necessary to hide it.

The problem is the world (aka the United States) isn't willing to give Israel the finger and let it fend for itself.

"The problem is the world (aka the United States) isn't willing to give Israel the finger and let it fend for itself."

If they did, the outcome might be even worse.

And I don't think you're considering intervention from neighboring countries. It would be a second holocaust.

There is no outcome where the Palestinians come out on type and the jews live. No different than any other country in the region.

#3 | Posted by madbomber at 2024-08-01 01:06 PM

Maybe they should have thought of that before they put Israel where it is?

Just a thought.

Germany was the right place for Israel, they committed the crimes that led to Israel being created.

They should have ceded land for a Jewish State as a form of reparation.

Nobody in Europe wants the Jews anymore than the Arabs do.

They're only wanted when they're not around. As soon as they come in they are a huge problem, just like the Palestinians.

Spain, Britain, Germany. They all expelled their Jews.

Hitler tried to take that to a continental level but failed.

After the war no countries in Europe offered to take them either.

Declaration of Israel's Independence, 1948

... The land of Israel was the birthplace of the Jewish people. Here their spiritual, religious and national identity was formed. Here they achieved independence and created a culture of national and universal significance. Here they wrote and gave the Bible to the world.

Exiled from Palestine, the Jewish people remained faithful to it in all the countries of their dispersion, never ceasing to pray and hope for their return and the restoration of their national freedom.

Impelled by this historic association, Jews strove throughout the centuries to go back to the land of their fathers and regain their statehood. In recent decades they returned in masses. They reclaimed the wilderness, revived their language, built cities and villages and established a vigorous and ever-growing community with its own economic and cultural life. They sought peace yet were ever prepared to defend themselves. They brought the blessing of progress to all inhabitants of the country.

In the year 1897 the First Zionist Congress, inspired by Theodor Herzl's vision of the Jewish State, proclaimed the right of the Jewish people to national revival in their own country.

This right was acknowledged by the Balfour Declaration of November 2, 1917, and re-affirmed by the Mandate of the League of Nations, which gave explicit international recognition to the historic connection of the Jewish people with Palestine and their right to reconstitute their National Home.

The Nazi holocaust, which engulfed millions of Jews in Europe, proved anew the urgency of the re-establishment of the Jewish state, which would solve the problem of Jewish homelessness by opening the gates to all Jews and lifting the Jewish people to equality in the family of nations.

The survivors of the European catastrophe, as well as Jews from other lands, proclaiming their right to a life of dignity, freedom and labor, and undeterred by hazards, hardships and obstacles, have tried unceasingly to enter Palestine.

In the Second World War the Jewish people in Palestine made a full contribution in the struggle of the freedom-loving nations against the Nazi evil. The sacrifices of their soldiers and the efforts of their workers gained them title to rank with the peoples who founded the United Nations.

On November 29, 1947, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a Resolution for the establishment of an independent Jewish State in Palestine, and called upon the inhabitants of the country to take such steps as may be necessary on their part to put the plan into effect.

This recognition by the United Nations of the right of the Jewish people to establish their Independent State may not be revoked. It is, moreover, the self-evident right of the Jewish people to be a nation, as all other nations, in its own Sovereign State.

ACCORDINGLY, WE, the members of the National Council, representing the Jewish people in Palestine and the Zionist movement of the world, met together in solemn assembly today, the day of the termination of the British mandate for Palestine, by virtue of the natural and historic right of the Jewish and of the Resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations,

HEREBY PROCLAIM the establishment of the Jewish State in Palestine, to be called ISRAEL.

WE HEREBY DECLARE that as from the termination of the Mandate at midnight, this night of the 14th and 15th May, 1948, and until the setting up of the duly elected bodies of the State in accordance with a Constitution, to be drawn up by a Constituent Assembly not later than the first day of October, 1948, the present National Council shall act as the provisional administration, shall constitute the Provisional Government of the State of Israel.

... continued...
...
THE STATE OF ISRAEL will be open to the immigration of Jews from all countries of their dispersion; will promote the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants; will be based on the precepts of liberty, justice and peace taught by the Hebrew Prophets; will uphold the full social and political equality of all its citizens, without distinction of race, creed or sex; will guarantee full freedom of conscience, worship, education and culture; will safeguard the sanctity and inviolability of the shrines and Holy Places of all religions; and will dedicate itself to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.

THE STATE OF ISRAEL will be ready to cooperate with the organs and representatives of the United Nations in the implementation of the Resolution of the Assembly of November 29, 1947, and will take steps to bring about the Economic Union over the whole of Palestine.

We appeal to the United Nations to assist the Jewish people in the building of its State and to admit Israel into the family of nations.

In the midst of wanton aggression, we yet call upon the Arab inhabitants of the State of Israel to return to the ways of peace and play their part in the development of the State, with full and equal citizenship and due representation in its bodies and institutions -- provisional or permanent.

We offer peace and unity to all the neighboring states and their peoples, and invite them to cooperate with the independent Jewish nation for the common good of all.

Our call goes out the Jewish people all over the world to rally to our side in the task of immigration and development and to stand by us in the great struggle for the fulfillment of the dream of generations -- the redemption of Israel.

With trust in Almighty God, we set our hand to this Declaration, at this Session of the Provisional State Council, in the city of Tel Aviv, on this Sabbath eve, the fifth of Iyar, 5708, the fourteenth day of May, 1948. ...

In 4 December 1948, Albert Einstein and Hannah Arendt (amongst other luminaries) co-signed a letter to the New York Times condemning Jewish fascism and their horrific mistreatment of Palestinians.

"To be a Jew means always being with the oppressed, never with the oppressors."

Israel has No Constitution. According to the Balfour Declaration they were supposed to write one.

What happened?

All the beautiful ideals about human rights and justice, the dedication to the values of tolerance and inclusion of non Jews. Never implemented.

The UN created Israel without even asking the locals if they wanted it. Israel has never actually declared their borders. To make it easier to expand into neighboring countries, I guess?

Why is there no Israeli Constitution?

Why has the UN not pushed them about that?

Israel.. get Curiouser and Curiouser, the more one learns...

Hesse would have made a great place for Israel. Smack dab in the middle of Germany,on the Rhine. It would have been justice to put it there given that the Germans tried to Annihilate the Jewish People. Losing several thousand square miles for a Jewish State would have at least been moral.

Instead they pushed Israel on people who didn't want it. People Who harmed no Jews themselves.

If the Germans didn't want Israel in Germany, Tough.. they slaughtered millions of Jews.

Germany loves Israel because now, Germany itself is virtually Judenfrei.

It's easy to love people who are not around.

If Israel was created in Europe, would they want it there any more than the Palestinians wanted it in Palestine?

#10 | Posted by Effeteposer at 2024-08-02 05:03 AM

So what.

Pomerania was historically German. Is it now? Does it deserve to be?

Poland got Pomerania because the Germans lost the war.

Germany ceding land for a Jewish State would have been more moral and just than pushing a horde of European Jews on people who harmed no one and didn't want them there. People who had NO SAY WHATSOEVER in this being decided.

Germany deserved to lose territory and giving it to the Jews would have at least made sense.

Putting Israel in Palestine REWARDED Germans for the Holocaust.

It's easy to love Israel when it's thousands of miles away.

Would the Germans love Israel if Mainz and Frankfurt were Israeli?

#12 | Posted by Effeteposer at 2024-08-02 05:26 AM

The point is that they returned to their original homeland.

Which wasn't really being much used or sought after until they got there and made improvements.

You might want to consider that there are no good guys in that fight, Israel or Hamas.

Would Americans love Israel if it was in NJ or in California?

If hordes of Jews took over in the heart of the US?

America could have ceded land for a Jewish homeland, Gee, I wonder why that was never considered?

Would it have been welcome in NJ? Would California have wanted it?

At least it would have been discussed with, and only happened with, the consent of the people affected.

The UN had no right to just give Israel land in Palestine, with no consideration of the fact it was already inhabited.

Palestine was treated as Expendable.

Some of the pre-WWII ideas floated for a Jewish state included allowing Jewish people to emigrate to under-populated Alaska after Kristallnacht in 1938. The proposal came from Harold Ickes' deputy which was encapsulated in the "Slattery Report."

One might also note that the British alone lost a million men securing N. Africa against Hitler's invading forces as they and the US carried out Churchill and FDR's plan.

The war was lost for the Nazis from that point forward, and the decision was made never to have to fight it again... hence the relocation of Israel back to their Homeland in one of the most strategic military locations in the world.

Not perfect, but neither without cause.

Do you also consider Golan Arabs as Israeli?

Both ideas are "ethnic cleansing".

All I know is they were either useless in preventing 9/11 or ignored. Followed by Nuttywahoo stating the case for why WE needed to invade Iraq again. The whole WMD thingie... and anxious to join forces with us... making weapons and stuff.

I was done with them then... but I do like their shoes.

For those of you claiming that "Israel" has existed in that location for 3000 years (it hasn't) and is therefore the rightful "homeland" for the jewish people, I'll just point out that North America was the homeland of Native American people for around 13,000 years. You wanna give it back?

"Israel" didn't exist from about 135 CE until 1948 CE. That it's where it is now is one of the stupidest things the Brits ever did.

I'm going to have to agree that the sane thing to do (if "Israel" was to be created at all, I hate the idea of a religious state) would have been to carve it out of Germany. The justification for doing pretty much whatever to Germany was definitely there. The obvious location would have been the southern half of the French zone. Putting it where the Brits did was guaranteed to create decades of conflict.

At this point, Israel's current behavior is more than sufficient to justify a multinational coalition stepping in to force it back to the 1967 green line borders and occupying it long enough to remove from their possession all WMDs - which, unlike Iraq, they actually have. Unfortunately the US government continues to protect an apartheid state engaged in an ongoing genocide.

Israeli violent sexual assault of "prisoners" including children has been commonplace for decades, if not since Israel's inception in 1948.

Israeli leadership has been de-humanizing Palestinians and Arabs for decades, calling them "cockroaches" and "human beasts with two legs" and other nasty terms long before the birth of Hamas.

FTA: "Ariel Kallner, a member of PM Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, explained Israel's goal behind the Gaza war:

"Right now, one goal: Nakba! A Nakba that will overshadow the Nakba of 1948!"

And for decades hard-working American taxpayer funds have been subsidizing hatred and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians. And Americans are told we're supposed to hate Hamas or Iran.

"One view..."

Sure. I guess. I suppose if you're flicking boogers at a map, anywhere would have sufficed.

But Germany hosting a Jewish state is just weird. Only 30% of Israelis have any sort of meaningful European ancestry, and they were part of the diaspora. Most have roots in the levant.

And while the German extirpation of the jews is the most commonly understood example of ethnic cleansing carried out against the jews, it also occurred in every country in southwest Asia. Iran, Oman, Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen...The countries once had large Jewish populations. Like the German National Socialists, they didn't want the Jews around. So they came up with a final solution. Those who were able to escape no live mostly in Israel.

#41 | Posted by madbomber at 2024-08-03 07:23 AM

Why does nobody seem to want them around? Why are they so hated?

By so many different cultures?

Yeahhh right. The Nazi's murdered more Jews on a slow weekend than the Jews have killed Arabs in their entire history of modern conflict they have had with Moslem cousins in the area. And if doubt me you might try reading a book of history sometime when you do not have your tongue on Hamass boots cleaning them. It the Israelis really wanted to exterminate the Moslems then why is there 1.5 millions Moslems in Israel still? Or, why has the IDF not finished off Gaza like they did that Yemenis harbor they completely incinerated a couple of weeks ago? Fact is, they could wipe out Gaza and the West Bank in just a few minutes but they somehow tolerate the endless barrage of projectiles coming from those places. The Moslems BS theme song about killing every single Jew in the Middle East "From the River to the Sea" will never be fulfilled. That is a pipe dream built upon abject lies and propaganda peddled by the likes of ISIS, Taliban and Al Qaeda. Jews have a right to exists and their neighbors are just going to have to learn to live in peace with them or face the consequences. There is no country on earth that would have not done the same thing the Israelis have done if they had experienced the same type of mass murders, kidnappings and gang rapes. At least the Israelis attempt to control their soldiers from doing this filth while the Arabs teach their children to do this to the Jews in their schools.

Why on earth would the Jews that survived the Holocaust wish to stay in Germany after the war or those that were in the camps throughout Europe go back to where they were pretty damn sure they were not wanted? In your bizarre world we should 'force' them to stay in Germany? Why? There is 23 Islamic states where all the Jews and most of the Christians have been willfully and violently ran off and yet you say nothing of this. Where are these Jews supposed to go? I know!... the only Jewish state on the globe is Israel and these people have a right to have just one Jewish state on the entire planet and the damn Arabs can just get it through their thick skulls that this is the way it is going to be. Hamass and Iran and 23 other Islamic states do not hide their hatred of the Jews, and in fact makes laws to support it and brainwash their children to believe in it and yet nobody calls them out on it. The state of Israel is a place that Jews can go live in relative safety but for some funny reason you deny them even this.

#47 | Posted by Wildman62 at 2024-08-03 07:06 PM

Remember, Palestinians were allies of the German National Socialists during WWII.

Nearly 10,000 Palestinians are currently held by Israel in prisons, excluding many from Gaza. About 3,432 of them are under administrative detention, which allows Israel to indefinitely keep them captive without trial.
