Ron DeSantis Is Refusing to Take Harris' Call on Helene

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is not taking calls from Vice President Kamala Harris about storm recovery just over a week after Hurricane Helene hammered parts of his state. A source familiar with the situation said he was dodging the Democratic presidential nominee's calls because they "seemed political," according to a DeSantis aide. "Kamala was trying to reach out, and we didn't answer," the DeSantis aide told NBC News.

Idk, given the narratives here on the DR she can't really do anything, she doesn't set policy, has no power?

Are you saying otherwise?

Seems like nothing but a political move on her part, trying to get DeSantis to claim she saved the day.

DeSantis seems to know BS when he sees it I guess, he does wear the boots for it, LOL

"The president has approved what we asked for. We're thankful for that. If there's something we need that they don't approve, I will not hesitate to call him. ... But everything we've asked for, from President Biden, he has approved," DeSantis said.

Let's say it's true, which sources say it's not, why would he waste his time talking to Harris when is managing his state very well and getting what he needs from the president?

The campaign has already seen intimidation, as some people who signed petitions to approve the measure, Amendment 4, have been questioned by police. But DeSantis has now escalated dramatically, with his Department of Health threatening in a letter to prosecute TV stations that air ads in favor of the amendment for "sanitary nuisance" " a law intended to apply to physical pollution hazards like improperly sealed septic tanks, which would subject employees of the TV stations to up to 60 days in jail.

This is a blatant attack on the First Amendment, wrote reporter Mark Joseph Stern.

A source familiar with the situation said he was dodging the Democratic presidential nominee's calls because they "seemed political," according to a DeSantis aide.

"Kamala was trying to reach out, and we didn't answer," the DeSantis aide told NBC News.

Which "source" says that DeSantis didn't intentionally refuse to take calls from Harris and Biden? There has been no denial I've seen from the DeSantis camp, perhaps you have and would link to them for us.

And it's never "wasting one's time" to speak to the President or Vice President when they're calling about a natural disaster that's befallen your state, as federal workers coordinate with state personnel to serve the American citizens affected by the storms. Perhaps the Governor had an issue with the federal personnel in his state he could have personally addressed with either Executive.

I don't think I've ever heard a leader say that his nation's President and Vice President are only trying to reach him due to "politics." Everything is about politics ultimately whenever elected politicians are involved, including DeSantis' refusal. He wants to avoid the criticism from Trump other Republican governors are getting for countering Trump's false allegations that FEMA's response is lacking or underfunded due to the other job Congress gave them to fund immigrant programs in the states which are paid for from a separate budget established by Congress, not by the whims of the White House.

And just on this point of the phone calls alone, didn't Trump make it a political issue himself when he wrongly stated that Biden had not spoken to Governor Kemp along these very same lines?

Would it have killed Ron to simply speak briefly and tell them "Thanks for all you're doing(?)"

#22 | Posted by tonyroma at 2024-10-07 09:06 PM

#22 but that is not what this thread is about. And why would he waste time speaking with her when all she is wanting is an opportunity to make it political. The governor was very grateful to President Biden, and his expressed that. And totally unrelated my friends that went to Orlando to evacuate checked out of the hotel today and went down to Boca Raton because they thought it might be safer. I hope your family remains well and safe from the storm.

#24 | Posted by oneironaut at 2024-10-07 09:25 PM

And why would he waste time speaking with her when all she is wanting is an opportunity to make it political.

No other governor has made this assertion Gracie because it simply doesn't happen in any overt way. There has been ZERO public transcripts of any conversations that either Biden nor Harris have had with in state officials regarding disaster relief. Phone calls are the general protocol, they happen every single time, and usually governors welcome them and relay to their constituents that the White House is looking out for their well being, seeing as how there Americans as well as state citizens.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Phone calls are a normal part of White House outreach post disaster. They're a personal touch, and while it is weeks before an election, the calls don't become political when they're the usual protocol under identical circumstances.

As it regards my family, they made it to a home south of Orlando but obviously they're unlikely to avoid the storm there either. But her current home is only 1 mile inland from the Gulf. She's in a far better location than her home.

I just heard DeSantis say this himself on video, but he also stated that no one informed him that Harris had tried to call, which makes the DeSantis aide quoted in the article perhaps a gatekeeper and the actual reason the two haven't spoken.

DeSantis didn't say that he wouldn't take her call, he said that he didn't believe that she'd tried to call him in the first place - a wholly different statement than the unnamed aide who indeed confirmed that Harris tried to call DeSantis.

Sounds like one of Ron's aides is making executive decisions for him or he openly lied and indeed gave the orders the aide followed.

Migrant Crossings at Southern Border Hit Lowest Level Under Biden Administration

Oct 07 2024

The number of migrants crossing the U.S. southern border illegally dropped to its lowest level during President Biden's administration in September, according to internal Department of Homeland Security data. Border Patrol apprehended nearly 54,000 individuals who crossed between legal entry points along the U.S.-Mexico border, down from the previous low of 56,000 in July and well below its peak in December, when 250,000 crossings were recorded.

In a researched said he's spoken to Biden and the FEMA director and has gotten all of the approvals he's asked for. Since he's been governor Florida's disaster relief response has been excellent. Probably unmatched by any other state. I don't like some of his policies but there is no denying his competence. In a different interview he said he's completely focused on the incoming storm and doesn't have time for politics. I'll link both.

Kamala Harris is the VPOTUS, she doesn't make frivolous calls. In less than 40 days, she may become the President-elect. Does Ron really think that all of Florida's storm needs from the federal government will be fulfilled by 1/20/25 at 12pm? If not, he just insinuated that the ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT's (that may become POTUS in less than 100 days) - who has personally spoken to every other affected Governor - concerns for Floridians dealing with storm damage (in Ron's mind) is nothing more than politics.

What an azzhat!

#40 | Posted by tonyroma at 2024-10-08 05:01 PM

This entire stunt is for publicity.

Which is why DeSantis is making such a big deal of ignoring her calls.

The moron thinks he may have a shot of the president in 2028.

Regardless of failing to get it this year.

Even without Trump, he lost to Nikki Haley.

What a loser he is.

Yeah... Trumpers know that it doesn't matter if they call you out for being a brain-damaged, dishonest public official as long as they spell your name right.

Because all the Cult will focus on, ok, is capable of focusing on, is the name.

And if it's a Cult Approved name, then that's all that matters.

From Biden's Twitter account:

" President Biden

Tonight, I spoke with Florida Governor DeSantis and Tampa Mayor Castor for firsthand reports on Hurricane Helene recovery and preparations for Hurricane Milton.

My Administration is ready to support both leaders and the people of Florida with any further resources they may need."

Don't worry. I'm sure Mike Johnson will call the House back to order to get more money for hurricane relief...any moment now...yep...any moment...

I wonder if all those Florida Republicans who voted against FEMA will vote for it this time?

#48 | Posted by Sycophant at 2024-10-09 12:44 PM

#48. According to both Biden and DeSantis Florida has all of the federal resources it needs and according to Biden (based upon a press question he answered) the federal government is on standby to deliver more resources as needed.

I know this may be impossible for you to fathom, Sycophant. But sometimes simply being human supersedes political calculations.
